The 28-year-old copped the coin s in th e main on Fr iday night whi le Steve Mart intook wi a 'h ar d - fa ug h r WIn on Sa t ur- 10 day. Brown a n d Martin faced a stiff cha llenge on th e weeke nd from a ll th e ice ra cing s tars as we l l a s National Speedway Champion Brad Oxley a nd 1984 number three in the world , L an ce King . Both were making th eir first ap pea ra nce on ice and both failed to make eithe r o f th e mains. He was actuall y n u m ber I X as Scotty Bro wn carries th e number one o n ice. After his press day crash, O xley was a lillie bi t cautious and was last out of th e gate. Fo ur laps lat er he h ad o n ly advance d as far as th ird as Bart Bast sco red a domina ting win over West Germany 's Stefan El ias, Event two was a Sco tty Brown ben efit . H e led th e even t wire-to-wire o ver G en e Woods and Robert " Kid " Curry.' The on ly ch allen ge to th e series p oint lead er came when France's T h iery Hilaire taggedhim hard on th e first la p. Brown kept on go ing w hi le th e Fren chman took a hard trip to the frozen surface. Martin and Bast ended th e seco n d round with wins an d th ey, a long with B ro wn , were tied for first with six points after two rounds. In event II Bro wn took th e lead at the start but wh ile cruising at th e head of the pack h is motor stopped in tu rn o ne on the last la p. Elias streaked by for the lead and th e eventua l wi n while Martin go t by for seco nd . Lazor was nearl y a lap do wn to Brown an d w he n . Brown 's bike quit coas ting, h e got off a nd push ed , it across the line to co llec t one poi nt ahead o f La zor. " It just sh u t o ff o n m e. I was lappin g G eorge Lazor an d I h eard a bike br eaking up an d ' I th ought it was h is. It sh u t off in turn one . I really don' t kn ow wha t the prob lem is yet. I pulle d th e plug o ut and it loo ked fine ," said Bro w n. Back o n the track Oxley won his first ever ice race by over a half st raigh t in event 12. Bri ggs took seco n d an d was sti ll in th e m ain event p icture as h e had seven p oints. J eff Brown took a much needed win over Wood s in event 13. After three ro u nds th ere was a log jam at the h ead of the pack. Northern Ca liforn ia 's Martin a nd Bast eac h had eig h t points. Sco tty Brown, Elias and Briggs had seven eac h wh ile Jeff Brown had six . A mi stak e by a ny o f th em wo u ld be cost ly in the fourth ro und. Elias was the first of th e contenders to make a n appeara nce in th e last round and it wasn 't a good one. He finished third beh ind Kin g and Curry in event 16. Oxley made it two in ,a row with a win over Marti n in 17. Martin's seco nd place finish gav e him 10 points a nd he was in the main . Bro wn en ded h is qua lifiers wit h a win in event 18. Lazor and Drym l beat him off the lin e but Brown ducked under them in the firs t bend and moved away for the victory. Event 19 featured a gri ndi ng crash. Bast was lead in g J eff Bro wn a nd Briggs when th ey ca me off turn four. Briggs p lowed into the leaders an d a ll th ree rid ers sla mm ed into th e wall with Bast gell ing th e worst of it. H e . was un in j ured but h is bike wa s destroyed. Pfetzing wo n th e event over J eff Bro wn an d Bast. T he one poi nt fo r Bast gave him n in e a nd he was in bu t J eff Brow n had to beat Elias in a runoff to make th e main. Scotty Brown , on the Sh oei v]"F Raci n g USA/Tom Bell Chevrole t/ Quak er Sta te/Justice Brothers j awa , was looki ng to make it five mains in a row and he was co m ing o ff gate two. Bast, o n Martin' s back up bike, was o ff th e pol e with Martin in three a nd J eff Bro wn in four. Referee Hank G endusa tripped th e ga te a nd Bast rocketed into the lead just ahead of Martin, SCally a nd J eff Bro wn . Bast went wide in tu rn two a nd Scouy Bro wn swe pt under Bast a nd got Martin at th e same tim e. Jeff Bro wn relegated Martin to third a t th e en d of the first revo lu tion. Once ou t front Scotty protected hi s advan tage wh il e Martin went do wn hard at the wh ite flag a nd slu m ped agains t th e board s. Sta rter H erb Spi vey th rew th e checke red a n d it wa s Scotty Brown for his fifth main in a row. Bast was right o n hi s rear tire for seco nd with J eff Brown taking third . Saturday Martin starte d o u t on the right foot wh en he defea ted Lazor and Kin~ in Saturday's open ing race. Pfetzmg, looking m ore at h ome o n ice with eac h p assing ra ce, won event two whi le P iep er was th e victo r in event three. SCally Bro wn made hi s debut in event four and h e was hook ed up a n d won. Gu rry took th e second p lace spot with Oxley thi rd . Brown was looking h ot but so was Mart in . H e came right back in even t six a n d p osted h is seco nd co nsecutive win . Pi eper was o u t secon d but Bast moved h im o ut of the way a nd too k the ru n ner-up spot. Eve nt seven saw Kin g ga te the pa ck but Oxley swooped under h im for th e lead. One la p la ter Kin g smacked the back ch u te wa ll and dropped to last. Oxley posted th e win while J ohn Grant too k seco nd. Curry topped Pfetzin g in event eight. Bro wn defeated Dryml in event n in e, and a fter two roun ds Brown a nd Martin were tied for first with six poi nts and they were lookin g head a n d shou lders above the com peti tio n o n th e ni ght. Martin 's perfect ni ght ended at th e sta rt of ro u n d three. He ca me off tu rn two o n the first la p o f event I I, sm ac ked th e back ch ute wa ll a nd broke hi s driv e chain. Back on the tra ck it was a ll Scotty Brown and his p erfect night wa s m arching o n. Kre isb e rg cl a imed se co n d w ith Woods third. Bast won event 12 o ver J eff Bro wn a n d Curry. Pi eper moved back into th e hunt for one o f th e cove ted top four spots wh en he beat O xl ey in event 13 whi le La zor won hi s o n ly race o f th e wee kend over Pfetzing in event 14. Martin 'needed a win in event 16 a nd he go t it whe n he pa ssed Pfetzing o n la p three fo r the vic tory. Event 18 went to Bro wn ove r Bast. In event 19 the red fla g ca me out. O n th e reru n Pieper led it all the way and went u ncha lle nged to earn h is ticket into the m a in event. P fetzin g and Curry were tied on poi nts a nd had to .ha ve a ru noff. P fetzin g tu rn ed th e tables a nd made his first -ever mai n. In the m ai n even t Brown was off the pole but Pfetzin g bea t h im to the firs t ben d. P fetzin g the n went wide and Bro wn shot under him for the lea d . H is lead didn 't la st lon g , ho wever, as hi s bi ke sp u ttered near th e end of th e first lap, lettin g Martin a n d Pieper by. Brown 's m ot or came back to life a nd he was o n th e charge once aga in but Pfetzin g ca ugh t a p iece o f the pi pe a nd rammed him in turn two o n th e second la p. Brown co ntin ued on but h is bike agai n shut off o n th e back ch u te a nd he fell in tu rn th ree. When Pfetzing clipped the pi pe it ended u p in the m iddl e of the tra ck. T he nex t lap bo th P ieper a nd Marti n ra n over it a nd Martin was th ro wn into P iepe r, w ho in turn sma cked th e' wa ll a nd derai led hi s ch a in. Ma rt in had a big lead over Pfetzing over th e last two laps while Pieper a nd Brown wat ched fro m the inf ield. After my star t I didn 't even think I 'wou ld be close. I ran over th e pipe wh en it was on th e tra ck a nd damn near went down.
