High Tech Rac ing (1 9) took runner-up honors at Daytona aboard a Suzuki GSXR 1100. Endu rance Series, held today at Daytona International Speedway. 12 Carry Andrew teamed with Californian James Domay to win th e fin al round for H yperCycle, which gave th e team two overa ll wins in 1987, fifth overa ll in th e final series sta n dings a n d . fourth in th e final GTO standi ngs. H yper-Cycle co m p leted th e 250m ile end ura nce race in two hou rs, 30.37 m in u tes, co m p letin g 71 laps with a n average speed or 100.685 m ph. H yper-C ycle bea t second-p lace High T ech Racing by a lm ost a fu ll lap. Th ird pl ace went to the Bougas O; Raci ng ·Suz uki GS X R I IO Suzu ki GSXRs swep t th e to p 10 pl aces. Seco n d City Racing II , a board a H onda CBR600 Hurri cane, took th e GT U win after ea rly GTU leaders, Ka yo R a cin g a n d T eam UNO , cra shed o ut o f co ntentio n. As was th e case in 1986, th e GTO titl e was decid ed by th e time th e series hi t Daytona' s high banks. Lockhart Ra cing's Larry Shorts and Dale Quarterl ey wrapped up th e seri es in Riverside, - Ca lifornia, during the next-to- last round. . The GTU cla ss was als o decided a t Riverside. The Kayo Racing GTU team ca me to Daytona with th e 600cc titl e a nd second overa ll in th e seri es. But th e battles for seco n d through fifth in both th e GTO and GTU divisi ons were still up for gr abs' go ing into th e fin al round . Only 294 p o ints se parated se co n d- p la ce Du tch m a n Racin~ from fifth-place Second City Racing in the .GT O battle, and a mere 179 points separated Team UNO . and Paul Smith Racing (1986 GTU ch am ps) in th e GTU class. The rac e produced a total of five different leaders before H yper-Cycle took over for good on lap 29 to lead th e ra ce to the checkers. Team Lockhart led the first four laps before retiring with a blown motor. Dutchman Racing led until lap 10, when they dropped out of contention with a series of pit stops to replace broken shifting linkage. Ka yo Racing, another team ' that began th e yea r with hopes of unseating Lockhart as the Na tional Champions, saw th eir sho t at a win go sou r on th e first lap wh en th e Kevin Rantzell /Ron Ew erth GSXRIIOO threw a ch ain , which ended their day . . A full grid of 80 teams were locked in for the sta rt , wi th Lockhart on die pole; Dutchman, High Tech, South Florida, and Second City filled oiit th e - front row. H yper-Cycle began their ra ce o n .the last row of th e GTO grid. At th e sta rt it was Lockhart's Larry Shorts an d Dutchman 's Doug Braun eck leading th e field. By th e en d of th e first lap Shorts a nd Brauneck a lready had begun to sep ara te th emselves from th e o the r 78 teams. By th e end of lap two , Lock hart a nd Dutchman had in creased their lead o ver South Fl orida Racing . Second City Racing , High T ech Ra cing , Bouga s Racing, Ski H aus, H yper-Cycle, Mid-West Racing and ECHO Racing filled o u t th e to p 10. Lockhart 's cha rg e came to an end in turn six o n lap five wh en their GSXRIIOO broke a cra n kshaft. With the ' Shorts/Quarterley duo gone, Brauneck moved the Dutchm an Ra cing Suzuki into th e point position and stre tch ed his lead. The Ski Haus Yamaha FZR IOOO of Dan Chivington and John Grush mov ed into second , while South Florida R a c i n g , ' winners of ro und 12 , dropped to th ird. Andrew moved Hyper-Cycle up to fourth , and High Tech held down fifth . The GTU ra ce was a scramble betw een Kayo Racing, Team UNO" Pa u l Smith Racing, and the Second City Ra cing II entry.
