II T im Newell took o n .the cha lle nge of a strong field in cludin g severa l In tern at io na l Six Days Enduro co mpe titors, a nd tight, slick trails to win the Missouri Mudders Fall Enduro . T he even t was one of th e final few even ts of th e 1987 Black Jack Enduro Series. Mo st of th e rid ers agreed th at thi s even t was on e of th e m o st cha lle ng in g, yet well p la nned o f th e Blac k Jack even ts, ' S teady rain th e day before produ ced genera lly slick trails that, by da y's end took its to ll o n th e almost 200 riders. Thanks to good planning by Mudders o rga n izers, th e en tire eve nt was rideab le without an y bo ~t1ene~ks. H o wever, many vir gin trails, with the remainder predominantly tight and hill y, crested new cha llenges around a lmost every turn. One shallow creek, in particu lar, was n eye-open er for most with a flat, mossy bed that ' was like ridin g a grea sed p ig o n spi ke heels. T he event consisted of two, a lmost ide ntica l, 36-mi le loop s. Criders co mpleted on ly the first, wh ile B, A, ~nd AA rode both, ~ hich in loop two inc luded an especially dema nding ad d itio na l shan section. Eve n at 1 8 mph the first 30 miles took points from all bu t the fastest woods' wizards. Overall winner Newell los t on ly two points at th e; end of loo p one. It was a close contest , as Six Da ys' riders J im Stanfield, Chris Caplinger, and ano ther ISDE m edal winner Greg Surdyke, had dropped two, th ree, a nd four points, respectively. The former H u ma n Race T eam mem ber look ed in good form after the long layoff. In th e closing laps Nicoloff turned several fast la ps to pu t the race away, whi le Klin g p u t his Yamaha FZR7 50 in seco n d p lace and made it stic k. The Rode a nd Trail Cycle/ Malcolm Smith Products-sponsor ed even t took p lace on a cool autumn day with tra il co nd itio ns near perfect. Approximately o ne m ile of fast grass tra ck and five mi les o f woods were used, receiving approva l from th e majority of rid er s. Zierman powered o ff to a good start in the .rwo -ho u r ra ce. Craig Hansen and Matt Stavish provided pursuit but Zierrnan was th e only rider to co rnp letee 10 laps before .the two hour mark and start hi s II th lap. Hansen and Stavi sh completed their 10 laps shortly af ter the ch eckered flag was u n fur led , and took h on ors as firs t and seco nd in th e 250cc A class. .
