Hoenschell IIies to win at Goodtimes MX By Warren E. Domke Clay Hoenschell won the 125 and 250cc Expert classes at the first round of the First International Race Series at Goodtimes Park. Roberts roosts at EugeneHS By Scott Taylor EU G ENE, IN , OCT. II Scott Roberts was the overall and 250cc class winner at the Salt Fork Dirt Riders ' second hare scrambles of the year at Eugene. Roberts got the holeshot, but ISDE gold medal winner Aaron Hough was in front and stretching his lead by the time the y reached the main check. It was all Hough until a loose axl e bolt left him a spectator. Roberts then regained the lead and held it to the finish. Dave Edsall gave a dis tant challenge after starting at the back of the pa ck with no parade lap. At the end Edsall was 18 seconds behind Roberts. Brent Dillman and his 430 Husky put in a very good ride and finished th ird overall and first in the Open class. Second in the class went to John Hardin who was pressured all race long by Jim Daniels. James Hough finished fourth overall and first 125 aboard his Honda. Brett Dubois finished second and Shawn Olson was third. The 200cc class went to William Baird, Jr. At on e point he was running third overall but fell off the pa ce at the end but still won the class. SEPT. 27 Team Green 's Dal e Spangler ripped through both motos of the l25cc Expert class and H onda-mounted David H and took the overall win in the 250cc/Open Expert class at Moto Sport Trails. Each rider supported the same I-I moto fini shes. Span~ler 's double moto assault were wne-to-wire wins. In the first moto Keith Perry and Steve Gardiner routed into second and third behind Spangler. Barney Barnett worked through the pack of riders from a seventh place start to challenge Perry for third after Gardiner had taken over the number two spot. Spangler was out to a big lead . Gardiner held onto second while Barnett caught and pa ssed Perry. Spangler and Perry grabbed the top two spots to start moto two and the . two riders held their po sitions throughout the 20 minute moto. Spangler once again fin ished with a substantial lead over Perry. Barnett rou ted his Honda pas t Chuck Nicholson and Pete Maurice to take th irdL Spangler. Rick Hammond and Tim Deutsch chased Hand through the first turn at the start of the first 25Occ/Open A moto. Hammond and Deutsch moved up when Spangler dropped out aftertwo laps with bike problems. Hand took the checkers 10 seconds ahead of Hammond. Hand and Spangler exchanged the lead severa l tim es in moto two before Hand took control and a slim two second lead. The two front runners built up a 22 second lead over third place finisher Hammond. Steve " Wilmo" Wilmington rode his Kawasaki to the overall win in the 250cc C class, finishing with 12 moto tallies. Henry Hauenstein and Brian Luketic routed ahead of Wilmington in moto one. Luketic dropped to fifth behind Mike Williams and Ken Frank. Wilmington motored past Hauenstein to take the lead with Williams motoring past Hauenstein less than a lap later. Wilmington.had over two seconds on Williams and Hauenstein at the ch eckered flag. Frank and Da ve Travis rounded out the top five. Frank and Wilmington were 1-2 at the star t of rnoto two and remained there throughout the five lap moto. Wilmington took the overall followed by Frank, Hauenstein and Williams. Bryan Jones took two start to finish moto wins to gai n the 125cc B class victory. OCT. 3 Clay Hoenschell flew to victory in both the 125 and 250cc Expert classes at the first race of the First International Race Seri es, Motocross '87. held at the Goodtimes Motorsports Park. Hoenschell was given tough competition by Terry T inney and Ron Dunfee. In the 125cc class Dunfee took second place and Tinney third. In the 250cc class Tinney came in second and Dunfee third. Dunfee took a spill after the start in the first rnoto and made up most of the lost time but was unable to capture the lead. Jack Beckham rode a Honda to the 250cc Expert fourth place. ahead of C. Scott Ch esser's Yamaha. which carried him to the fifth place spot. Chesser earned fourth in the 125cc Expert class, ahead of Eduardo Lopez. one of the Experts from Mexico who competed in the Inter. national competition series. Results 125 BEG: 1. OCT. 4 Denny Beitl er cap tu red the overall Expert win after battling it out with T om Haller in the Over 30 class at . the Draper Cross Country race. Beitler took the hol eshot and led for . two laps, was passed by Haller on the third lap but repassed seconds lat er wh en Hall er ran out of ga s on the last lap. As a result Beitler beat 23 Expert riders to win overall. Honda rider Wendell Heard took overall Ama teur in the 250cc Amateur class by beating 49 other Amateur · riders. Heard led each lap by one minute and gained another minute on the last lap. beating Ron Mor rison on a Yamaha by two minutes. Another close race was between Husky rider Pete Doonkeen and i Kawasaki rider Ken Heatherington in the Open Amateur class. Heatherington led the first two laps by one minute, then on the' third lap Doonkeen gained two minutes and beat Heatherington by three minutes on the last lap. This was Doonkeen's first win of the season. It was also a first win for Peter Holcombe in the 125cc Amateur class against Clin t Lemons. Holcombe took the ho leshot but was passed by Lemons on the second lap. Holcombe was only seconds behind Lemons on the third lap and passed him on the last lap. beating Lemons by over two minutes. CA, OCT. 2 The Vohland brothers made another appearance at the Friday night stadium motocross races at Sacramento Raceway Park's MotoBowl and the results were predictable as Tyson Vohland took the overall victory in the Pro class and Tallon finished a close second. Tallon shot into the lead of the first moto' with Hi-Point/Hondamounted Shawn Wooten in tow. Tallon had his Kawasaki pegged in overdrive but Tyson was riding superbly and soon moved his machine around Wooten and started working on his sibling rival. T y,son took the lead and styled to the win with Tallon second. Wooten held on for third while fourth went to Tony McGrath. Rounding out the top five was Honda -mounted Greg Tirheimer. Moto two was much like the opening round with Tyson on top for the overall, Tallon second overall. a pa ir of thirds for third overall Wooten and McGrath took fourth overall. Results PRO: 1.
