Smith, Everson, Moretz top I.ACR MX Tyler tops at Roseburg Gold Cup Motocross oJ Results By David Procida PALMDALE, CA, ocr. 11 Mindy Sm ith, Dana Everson and Sheila Moretz were th e winners in the women's class racin g' as CRC hosted round seven of the Western USA Championship Series a t Los Angeles County Raceway. Suzuki Country's Tami Rice and Mashburn Kawasaki's Mindy Smith diced and swapped th e Women 's Expert lead back and forth in mota one before Rice proved to ha ve the upper hand. In the Intermediate class Dana Evanson put her YZ250behind Rice and Smith but in front of all tlie o th er Intermediates as 'she went I-I for th e overall. Joy Ames surprised all th e other .women as th e Nov ice rider holeshot moto two. H er lead was sho rt-li ved but Ames did manage to hold onto the number two ' Novice position behind Hi-Desert Kaw asaki rider Slieil a Moretz. . In Vet Beginner racing Ed Tashjian put hi s machine into th e limeligh t as he was chased to th e chec kered by th e point lead er in th e series Larry Miller. Mark Neau ro unded out th e top th ree. ' ,In 125cc Intermediat e ac tio n Tony Qu all s hol eshot mota one with Mik e Chamb erlain and J eremy McG rath close behind him. Chamberlain a ll but sewed up the overa ll series win as he powered by Qualls into th e lead with McGra th foll o wing a co up le of turns later. McGrath quickly closed the gap a nd too k th e lead from Chamberlain and held on for th e win. In moto two H onda pilo t Chris T rickl e led the pack for th e ope ni ng lap before hi s H onda 's engi ne soured. Chamberl ain and McGrath took over from th ere and led H ondamounted J eff Fine and Bubba Erickson. T he four riders pulled away from th e pack and maintained a torrid pace and it fin ally took its toll as McG ra th buried hi s front tir e deep By Clay Light ROSEBURG, OR, ocr. 10 Round five of th e Yama ha Gold Cup Seri es, held at Clarks Branch Ra cewa y in Roseburg, featured outstandin g performances by dozen s of individual s, but th e most noteworthy performance was th at of Washing- 'ton 's Scott T yler. Du e to th e Gold Cup races being non-sanctioned, a rider may choo se to compete in th ree classes. Today, T yler did just that and came away with two overa ll wins in the 250cc and Open Pro classes, and too k second overall to Larry Ward in the 125cc Pro class. Points leader Ward took care of both motos in the 125cc Pro class with relative ease. Ward led th e first mo to ahead of Oren Bray and Tony Grav es, wh o wer e fi ght in g fo r second. Tyler came th rough traffic at an unbelievabl e rate, sett ling into th e top five by the midway po int . T yler nabbed Bray lat e in th e mo ta to take third be hi nd Ward a nd Graves, fin ishing ahead of Bra y a nd Grayson H art . . Oregon's Hart jammed his KX into th e lead at tlie dro p of th e ga te in mo to two whi le Ward, Tyler, Idaho 's Brian T ho mso n a nd Gary Beyer fill ed th e top five at th e end of th e first la p . By la p two, Ward had overta ken H art for th e lead and had a six-second adva ntage by the six th lap. H art did a sensa tiona l job of hol din g off T yler for secon d, but a first mo to fifth , placed T yler second overa ll after consistent 3-3 perfor mances. H art (5-2), Bray (4-4) and Graves (2-6) ro un ded ou t the top five overa ll. T he 250cc P ro class h as been do mi nated by two riders , with th e excep tion of the Albany series opener won by Hart. T yler and Ward have exchanged leads throughout every moto since, and it was mu ch th e same today. Coming into th e event, Larson held a slim point lead , but at th e end of both mo tes, Ty ler prevailed wi th, II rides to beat La rson 's 2-2 performa nces a n d th e ' 4-3 ri des from Ca liforn ian Ron LaPointe. Another classic battle was that of Ryan Huffman and Danny U lven for th e 80cc Intermediat e point lead . Lead er Ulven , riding with an injured leg from a local race crash, couldn 't bea t' Huffman , who narrowed Ulv en 's point lead. Beyer, Blasdell burn Albany SX By Clay Light ALBANy,.OR, ocr. 4 Kawasa ki riders G ar y Beyer and Ni cky Blasdell took advantage of H onda speedster Tony Graves' rnis- fortune to earn Pro class wins at the Albany Supercross. Beyer topped th e 125cc Pro class and Blasdell claimed th e 250cc Pro class win a t th e final ro und of the Motocross No rt hwest Sum mer Series. G raves cra shed in th e second mo to of each class, ending his m onth-long do m in ati on of the di visions. The 125cc Pro cla ss was loaded with ta lent. In th e first mota, H onda-mounted Dan a Anderson blurred to th e head of the p ack with Beyer, Keith Foidel , Graves, Kenny Olsen and David Browning fighting for th e number two spot. By the third lap, Beyer over too k And erson for th e lead, then Gra ves also dropped Anderson back a spo t. Beyer and Graves were engaged in a wh eel-to-wheel combat for th e ent ire 30-mi n ute moto while Anderson rode in third until Mot ocross Northwest's riumber two plateholder Olsen picked him off, moving to third, where he fin ished. The battle for th e lead went do wn to th e last lap, Graves drove inside of Beyer for the win. Anderson was holeshot king of the da y, again leading at th e drop of the ga te in mota two. Olsen ran second while Beyer, Foidel, Browning and Graves gave chase. Gra ves moved 'to .third after on e lap and was seco nd behind Beyer on lap three. Beyer and Graves rod e side-by-side the en tire m oto until the last lap . That's when Graves' fin e ride came to an end. Gr aves' mi sfortune put Ol sen into second, beh ind Beyer, but ahead of An derso n a n d Bro w nin g a t th e finish. Beyer 's 2-1 p erfo rm an ces ne tted the overall win over O lsen (32) an d Anderso n 's 4-3 rides. Blasdell and Graves found the m selves locked in battle in th e first 250cc P ro contes t from th e very start . After taking turns leading, Graves too k control whe n th e chips were do wn. Graves earned the win with Blasdell and H onda pi lo t Don Bisceglia trailing. Graves was n' t abo ut to settle for second place in moto two and opened up a good-sized lead o n the first lap. Blasdell rode alone in seco nd, some two turns back, and was in the righ t pl ace at the rig ht tim e when Graves crashed. Blasdell inherited the lead wit h two laps remain ing to earn the overall via 2-1 rides. H onda-m ounted Ron Sun won th e Up th e Hill class . Kurt Stevens, Mik e Chase. Mitch Kirkpatrick and Don Schneider rounded o u t the top five. 37
