Eac h class ra n one mo to o n Saturday an d two o n Sunday. Overall scores were determined by a rider's two best fin ish es. In Satur day's open ing 0-500cc Pro moto, Brad shaw overca me a first lap sp ill and gearbox pr obl em s to eventua lly pass Scott McClain and leader Tim my Barnes for the win. During the final laps, Barnes was slowed by mech anical problem s and finished fifth wh ile McClain fini sh second. Suzuki's Ronnie Tichenor was o n hand for Sunday's action but the start of moto two found Tichenor flounderi ng at th e b ack o f the pack . Tichen or went down twice before the moto was over, bu t he still ma naged a fourth place finish . , " It' s been a lon g time. since I've ri dden o n a sa nd track," sa id T ich enor, " and I was running o n hard- track type tires. I was havi ng a .lot of tro uble o ut there." ~ Bradshaw had started third but a second lap sp ill dropped him to fifth behind Tichenor. Bradshaw wicked up h is Fox / PJ - l/Bo yessensponsored ma chine and was soo n past Tichenor, McN eil and Barnes. At a bo u t th e halfway mark , Bradshaw jumped pa st McClain on th e uphill section and held on for th e win to claim the championship and the $500 prize. . . McClain 's bike was di sabled in a .spill but hi s pair of seconds in the first two mo tos was .good for ru nner-up honors. Barnes posted 5-3-2 for fourth overa ll. . The first Open Amateur mo to saw Dea n Herrin grab th e holeshot whil e Rober t Curtain gave chase. H errin quickly ope ned up hi s lead but on the third lap he drop ped off th e pa ce. Lap four saw Curtain tak e over the lead whi le Herrin faded to a di stant second ahead of David Ell er. With two l aps remaining, however , Curtain cra shed and DNF. Herrin cruised to the win over Eller. . " T hat was a lucky win for me," said H erri n, " My arms wer e so pumped up that I co uld hardly hold on to the bike." Douglas victorious at .Shannonville RR By Colin Fraser ONTARIO, CANADA, O CT. 4 Rising Canadian roa d racing star T ommy Douglas cl inc hed the Motoplan-Castrol Eastern Canada Ch all en ge Series overall titl e with a close feature race victory in the Shoei H elmets Final e, the n inth and final round of the On tario-Quebec Cham pionships. Riding hi s Gord Hubbel built, Pirelli /P ol ysportlShoei l Drospo /Wi seco /Yam ah a Motor Canada-backed FZR750 Su perb ike, Douglas passed early leader Norm Murphy at the halfway point, and then held Murphy off in a tense battle fo r th e remainder of th e race. Dougl as was on ly seven bik e lengths . ahead of Murphy at the checkered flag . BelI evi li e Ka wa saki -b acked Murphy needed a m iracle to grab th e Superb ike titl e since Douglas had only to p lace in the top n ine to finish first overall. But Murphy gave it all h e h ad , pushing Dou glas h ard thro ughou t the race with th e Ninja Superbike. With the Regional titl e, Douglas ' h as n o w cemented hi s record as second best road racer in Canada; since he placed second Norm Murphy leads Tom Douglas early in the Pro 750 Superbike feature at Sharinonville. Med aglia he ld seco n d 'on the open ing lap, but settled into a ba ttle for fou rt h wi th Paquet as the race progressed. But DuHamel ca ught this pair, and the pa ce p icked up , as did th e act io n. On th e last lap; Paquet ran wide comi ng off the back straight of the 15 turn, 2.4 m ile track, an d th is gave Meda glia some breath in g room. The final positi on s were. Medaglia in fourth, DuHam el inches beh in d in fifth and a frustra ted Paq uet sixth. T he Pro O pen class p roduced similar results, with Dougl as holding off Mu rphy for the wm . Medaglia did well to stay right with the leaders o n h is stocker to get thi rd , whi le DuH a m el just held o ff Brunet's rough runni ng two-stroke for fourth. In Pro Production action, Brunet used his stock Suzuki Gamma to battle with Paquet 's Honda H urri ca ne for the lead . Brunet event ually scored a n extremely- narrow win which al so gave him th e Pro 600 P rodu ction titl e. Walter Di rno trovski snuck by Al Royer o n th e last lap to grab th ird. . Paquet used th e su perior horsepower of hi s 750 Interceptor to hold off Brunet 's 500 in another clo se battle during 750cc Production; with Medaglia pl acing third. Pro Open Production saw Brunet with a sur prise win after yet ano ther ra ce-lon g battle with second pl aced Medaglia and third finisher .Paquet. Dominant in Ama teu r Formula II this seaso n, Dan Stott made th e j ump to Pro earlyand promp tly ra n away from the Pro F-2 pack. Peter Trevitt rode for the first tim e in two years to wind up seco n d whil e Keith J ackson nursed his converted H onda motocrosser into th ird. Amateur 125 sta r Mike Bu sb y mad e a su ccessful jumpto a Yamaha TZ250 by winning the Amateur F2 fin al, beating the four-strok e Ro tax flat tracker of James Struke by a large margin. Amateur star of the weekend was Stephen Mox ey, who won 750cc Prod uction , 750cc Superbike and Open on hi s Honda 750 Interceptor. II Expert rider Cecil H oll ien edge d out the competitio n with a narrow 3 poi nt margin giving him the pr emier spot in Bryan Bengamin's Trials event at Cayuta. Hollien was th e only rider to score a clean in sectio n six , and was one of on ly two riders who made it through all day. Later riders turned this section into an impassive grease pit. Advanced rider David Karst had hi s "knarly root" skills well adjusted givi ng him first place with 127 points. Intermediate J oe Shavelier 's persistence I paid off in section two securing first p lace wi th 102 points for th e day. LaVern Bowen collected -yet ano ther first place in th e Senior A class with only 93 points. Senior B rider Don Allis bested a field of eigh t rid ers to ta ke first with 58 poin ts. Novice rider Fred Wood demonstrated some consistent riding whi ch enabled him to clinch th e number one spo t. Secti on number eigh t gave woo d quite a cha lle nge, tossing him over th e handlebars at least once. This section consisted of a large rock pile on the side of a steep hi ll. This 35
