to pass. Swearington worked hard to
press Seidl to make a mis ta ke, bu t
had to rely on hi s yo u th to give hi m
the abi lity to pass on the tree-lined
straightaway.
McCabe sta rted developing clu tch
problems abo u t ha lfwa y through th e
mo to allowing Swearingen to gain
o n hi m . N o t u si n g h i s cl u tc h ,
McCabe jumpe d too high on the
finis h line jump , causing hi s chain
to go so uth . This let Swearingen by
to motor his way to th e checkered
flag, with Seidl second and Chew
third. McCa be fin ished fourth.
With the start of the second mo to
McCabe was go ing to ma ke sure
everyo ne kn ew he was the fas test on
th e track. H e pulled the hol esh o t a nd
di d not look back. McCabe led the
race wire-to-wire, fin ish ing wi th a 20
second lead. This left a fierce battle
for second among Swearingen , Seidl
and Ch ew. Seidl was running seco nd
and had Swearington ri gh t o n his
tail. It took a desperate move by
Swearingen to pass Seidl within 200
feet of th e finish line. Swearington
pulled beside Seidl in the fin al berm
and went high while Seidl stayed in
hi s line down low. Swearingen went
down on top of Seidl. caus ing a two
bike pileup. Swea rington was able
to rem ount first a nd raced to the
checkered £Jag gi ving him th e overa ll
win for the day , with McCabe seco nd ,
Seidl th ird and Ch ew fourth.

completed the 350-mile course in a
time of 7:28.09 ho urs to edge o ut th e
team of Paul Ostb o a nd Cooper
Wa llace by 1:10. Ostb o , was the
overall wi n ner last February in th e
Gran Ca rrera Internaciona l.
The Morton/Mor gan Yamaha was
the first vehicle off th e line a t 7:00
a.m., Saturday , initiating th e firs tever Baja rac e to start and finish in
the newl y-built Sa n Felipe Off Road
Sta di u m. (T he stadi u m features a
1.4-m ile off-road co u rse wi th 17
jumps o f all sizes and shapes a nd will
soo n be expanded to incl ude tracks
for a ll types of off-roa d a nd dirt
rac ing ).
Morton a n d Morgan too k the
gree n £Jag and never looked back as
th ey led wi re-to-wire. They were
challe nged early in the race when the
Mexi can entry of Mal o and Luna
dr ew within a minute of the leaders.
Bu t af ter com ple ting their first 180mil e lap, th e challengers dropped
ba ck to third with a n l l-minute
defi cit a n d fa cing mechanical
problems.

Starting th e second 180-mile lap,
O stbo a nd Wallace began th eir
charge a nd moved close enough to
see the Morton/Morgan dust as they
headed north of San Felipe through
Diablo Dry Lake. They inched their
wa y up for most of th e lap and then,
within 30 miles of the finish , Ostbo/
Walla ce drew even closer , to be only
two-minutes from the lead ers. Then
Morton rode into the sta di um and
began to make his last lap on th e
l A- m il e cou r se, when O stb o
appeared a t the mouth of the stadiu m
as well. At the finis h, the time and
differen ce between first a nd second
was on ly one minute a nd 10 seconds,

o n-adjus ted time.
P icking up first p lace and the
overall in the Sportsman O pen MC
category, were the brother tea m of
Junior and Vito H al e on a 250cc
H onda. Their time of 8:14.41 was 34
minutes faster th an the second p lace
H onda 250 of Tim Cl ark a nd Dennis
T orgerson.
In th e Sportsma n Limited motorcycle class (125cc a nd Classes 30 an d
38), Class 38 riders Tony P ierce and
Steve Ransom completed their two
l 80-m ile laps aboard a 500cc KTM
in a time of 8:43.44 to win th e class
by a margin of 43 minutes over
you ngs ters Steve T ab er a nd Myan
Spaccarell i wh o were a boar d a

Stacey Cook entered toda y's SRAC

classes in points. By da y's end, he
had added bo th titl es to his 125cc
Supercross Ch am pi onship wo n two
weeks earlier.
Gi l Murray holeshot the first l25cc
P ro m o to , wi th Coo k i n si x th.
Murray led five la ps, while Cook was
wo rkin g to se co nd a n d closi ng
Murray's nine second margin. Cook
too k th e lead a nd left Murray 27
seco nds beh ind a t the finish. Coo k
was never chall enged in round two ,
win ning by 55 seco nds over Jim
Mit chell.
Cook led th e 250cc P ros th ro ugh
th e first turn o f mot o one, wh ile Kip
Sandell was fourth. Sandell bl ew
past everyone befo re lap one was
co m pleted , and screamed away to a
huge win over Cook a nd Mitchel l.
Keith Campbell ga ted first in round
two , with Sa ndell fifth. Cook was
pinched off in turn one a nd crashed,
remo u nting last. Mi tch ell assu med
th e lead in lap one just ahea d of
Sandell . Cook had di splaced 23 riders
on th e first lap, and was in seven th .
Sandell too k the lea d on lap two and
pulled away to another commanding
wi n ahead of Mitch ell and Corey
Co pe. Cook reach ed fourth, but th e
early effort a nd three p revious 30minute mo tos left h im drained. H e
fin ish ed a d istan t fourth for thi rd
overall behind Sa nde ll and Mi tchel l.
The best effort of the da y came in
round o ne o f th e Open Pros. Dave
Newell was abse nt wi th inj uries, but
he alread y had the title wra pped up.
That lef t Derek Brown and Bob
Hanrahan to dice for the day's top
honors. H anrahan took the early
lead in moto one, with Brown
eig h th . Brown closed on Hanrahan '
by lap th ree, th en slid down on the
face of a tabletop. H e rem ounted, 18
seconds ba ck , and started reeling in
Hanrahan aga in. He passed Hanrahan with just over one lap to go , but
H arnahan stayed close. Then with
three turns to .g o Brown stalled
because his clutch lever was damaged
from the crash, but he restarted in
tim e to keep th e lead and won by
half a bike length. Hanrahan led the
first four laps of moto two, then
Brown outsprinted him down the
freeway. Once in the lead, Brown
