The 125cc Novice a nd l25 cc Ama teu r class es were run together but scored separa te with Am at eur winner Scott Riggs nai ling the holesh ot a t the star t of th e main. Mike Eastwood and Moree were in hot pursu it as th ey ba tt led for the Novice class lead. Moree found a wa y past Eastwood and on the white flag lap he moved in o n Riggs. As the two cla ss leaders took th e whoops for the final time Moree made h is move and ducked under Riggs in a tight turn . Moree held on to become th e overall and 125cc Novice winner over Eastwood while Riggs was an easy winner in the Amateur division. Todd Lineberry was second Am ateur over T im Fuquay, . Ka wa sa ki of R al ei g h ' s St ev e McKnabb passed early leader Lee Martin - and th en cru ised to victory in th e 250cc Novice main while Tim Wilkerson 's charge placed him in second at the finish over Tim Mantooth. J a m es Goin and Clifford Pierce rounded out th e top five. Cox's Ha rley-Davidso n -spo nsored Rusty Co leman jammed to wins in both th e Senior Mini and Super Mini classes with Joey Thompson finish ing runner-up in the Senior Mini class whi le Tilden Styron was second in th e Super Minis. Pa t Riley led Sco tt to th e chec kered flag in th e firs t moto , with Jay Hoenk h olding off a ha rd- char ging Chri s Hens e for th ird. In th e seco n d moto Sco tt jammed hi s way th ro ugh th e first turn to grab an early lead. Ho t in pursuit were John N iemi a n d Ri ley but Scott motored in for a solid win o n hi s Honda. Ni emi h eld on to seco nd which co m bine d with hi s first m oto six th gave him third overa ll behind Ri ley. Bense wrapped up fourth ov erall with another sm o oth ride giving him fourth behind R iley. Greg Nelson roosted through th e sandy first tutn to lead th e 125cc Expert pack in the first moto. Robbie Engstrom quickly moved . in to challenge and a fter pressuring for two la ps grabbed .th e lead. Nelson couldn ' t reta lia te successfully but held o n for second. Atkins entered the fin al e with an insurmountable points lead, but th at d id n ot slow the Vickery Mot orsports sponsored flyer. He hol esh o t rnoto one a nd left th e p ack 70 seco n ds beh ind a t th e chec kers. Scott Fu lcher came from seventh to seco nd in one lap, onl y to h ave hi s ch ain br eak a few circ u its later. This gave seco n d to J eff Hopkins, wh o held o ff J erem y Middaugh at the finish. Atkin s cruised to another easy win in round two ahead of Middaugh a nd Fulcher. Middaugh ea rned seco n d overa ll , while H opkins took third overa ll after taking fifth in moto two. Vic Barlish, 1984 Senior Exp ert State Champion, got th e title ba ck from two-time defending ch a m p Dave Wo llaston . Wollaston won both motos toda y, as he has on nine previous occasions this season. However, h e m issed three events earlier in the year, which cost h im a t hird s traight championship. Barl ish went 2-2 for the day , and won th e titl e by four points ov er Wollaston. Micah Moyes also went I-I in th e 60cc Amateu r class a nd .easily won th e class championship. T he litt le speeds ter has won 17 overall victories th is year. He also took second overall in the 80cc Amateur class. Mary J oh nson won the Women 's overall and th e cha m p io nsh ip. Sh e led th e first lap of. moto one before slip p in g down on a freshly watered .sectio n just before th e finish line. Tracy Frydendall to ok over the lead an d won ahe ad of Johnson. Johnson holesh ot round two , but sp u n into a 360 in th e first turn, which had al so just been water ed. Johnson sp rinted from last lO first by the chec kers, winning just ahead o f Frydendall. The intri ca te co urse of vario us p ylon o bstacles mi gh t make so me of th e m ost famous tr ia ls riders cringe, if th ey were riding full dr ess H arleys, Kawasakis, Yamahas a n d Hondas with sire ns, windshields, ra da rs, spotlights and fo otboards. Th e co urse in cl uded practicall y every m aneuver th at a motorcycle o fficer might en co u n ter in 'a tight co u rse situation, excep t str aight ou t speed. The points were evaluated from th e fas test average of two runs through th e tigh t course, and th en the final score was th e total includ- . ing th e fina l total of the three times. Those not in th e top 20 did their thing in a slow race with spotlights and sirens screaming. Topping the slow race wa s Bill McDonnell of Ft. Worth PD followed by Kenny Lyons of Wichita Falls PD. In both motos it was Bruce Manzoni wh o m astered th e holeshot aboard his H onda with a seri ous but ca u tious Rabe over taki ng him for the lead within a lap a nd a h alf. The fi rst time he did was on th e app roach to a la rge tab letop jump but th e seco n d time it was in a turn before th e fin ish line. Manzoni did end up with seco nd overa ll by virtue o f hi s 3-2 finish es a nd it was Ala n Bru nk, back a fter a long ab sen ce, wit h thi rd overall via hi s 4-5 finish es. . The I25cc Pros were battl ing a t th e same time a nd it was J on Nelson aboard hi s H onda that topped Dean Mats on and Danny Paladino, al so - Honda mounted. The first moto was marred wh en all three I25cc riders jumped the gate and brough t a restart. In the restart all were careful not lO get near the backw ard dropping gate. The second m oto was a bi t of a problem for Pal adi n o, wh o aga in got over the gate and was do cked a lap, and for Matson; who sat at the start lin e th in king that he would again ge t a restart.
