Brow wins Riverside ST l By Loren & Barbara Williams TRAVELERS REST, SC, SEPT. 27 Charles Freem an a nd Camel Pro rider Garth Brow put on quite a show during Open Pro short tra ck racing at Riverside Speedway in Travelers Rest, with the nod going to Brow in both th e heat race and the main event. Brow was firs t off th e line in th e Open Pro heat, followed by. Freeman. The first couple of laps the race looked like an easy win for Brow, but Freem an edged ever closer and at th e midway point Freeman 's Yamaha began to nip at th e heel s of Brow's Paul Steverson H onda. Despite the fact th at he was riding without brakes, Freeman got a wh eel on Brow a few times, but the checkers unfurled before he cou ld get the job doni . . Brow agai n was first off th e line a t th e start of th e Open Pro main. Fr eeman im me dia te l y m o ved to Brow's righ t, hoping to force Brow off th e fast, outside line. H alfway th rough lap two, Freeman pulled a hea d and rem ained th ere for the next six laps, teetering on the brink of co nt ro l. Brow was content to wait and wa tch for a weak ness. On lap seven , Brow approached turn one hi gh, o n the ou tside lin e, and when Freeman dr ifted u p , Brow sq uared off th e corner and zip ped underneath. Freeman po ured on the ' ju ice in a last-d i tch a tt em pt to sa lvage h is lead , b ut Brow also cra nked on the throttle. Wh en th ey cro ssed the fin ish line three laps later, Freem an was as close as Brow 's shado w, bu t he was still in second. Ya ma h a-mo u nted Ken ne th Ba rr fin ished third. ' Mot ocrosser Richa rd Cope came down fro m North Caroli na to win two MX events - the Open Amateur class a nd the 250cc Ama teur division - then surprised everyo ne by claiming a third victory in the 500cc Amateu r short track race aboard a borrowed Hond a CR500. Cope wa s second off th e line in th e sho rt track heat race, just behind L o r en Wi llia m s, b u t h e passed .Willia ms on lap two and was go ne. In the oval main event there was no questio n about the o u tco me . Co pe leaped to the front when the green flag flew, putting d istance be tween h imself and Williams,while Benson Metcalf started third on a Honda motocrosser. Neal nabs win at Hillbilly Hills MX By Gary Crider · MACON, GA , OCT. 4 T odd Neal ear ned the wi n in th e · hard-fought l25cc B class at Hillbilly Hills MX in round fi ve o f th e Georgia/Alab ama Fall Series. Fr eewheeling H onda-ba ck ed Neal's series mo te -winning strea k came to an end inthe first moto. Neal go t awa y fifth beh ind four o the r H onda riders a nd had to spe n d severa l laps fightin g past Roswell H onda' s Tom my Bilz a nd Lonni e Brown to secure third position. On th e last lap, Neal went by Dan L ipscomb fo r second, but R oss J ohnston was in com ma nd of the lead and wo n over Neal. Neal had no trouble wi nning the fin al moto a nd claimed top go ld. J ohnston 's 1-3 tally earn ed runneru p honor s and moved hi m up o ne notch in th e sta ndings to second wi th · 192 po int s beh ind Neal's 247 total. Jason Coleman caught fire in mo to two to pos t 6-2 for th ird overall a hea d of Paul Cl ine and Bilz. johnston came back to win the 250<:c B division with a 1-3 sco re over Earnest H arbin' s 4-2. Co leman ran into trouble early in moto one and finish ed 10th, but stor med to th e wi n in rnot o two to ne t sixth overa ll. J oh ns ton leads the series, 15 points over Ha rbin. T ony Mo rris led th e start of th e first 250cc C rnoto but crashed on lap three and limped to a 12th p lace finish with an injured h ip. Kip p Brule' took over th e lead but soon stalled hi s engine and gave the position to Paxton Owens. Michael H enderson. took over on the next lap a nd held o n to wi n over Ti m H awkins, Brule' and Owen s. MOlO two saw Hawkins edge Henderson for the moto win and the overa ll while Brule' claimed third p lace gold over Owen s. Morris was unab le to ride the second moto but held on to second in the point race behind Hawki ns. . The 250cc/ Open A class saw plenty of close racing but David ' Kelley managed a perfect score over Joe Rogers and Darryl H eisler. Heisler leads the series by two points over Rogers. Chance Matthews saw h is perfect series record come to an end in the fir st Senior Mini rnoto when his Suzuki 's rear tire went flat , dropping him Irom first to an eventual seventh place finish. Mcintyre finished well up front wi th ·Lee taking second. Mueller was third. The Heavyweight Supersport race saw Mcintyre pull a nother holeshot ahead of Carlo Rao, Lee and James Cox. By lap two McIntyre had three seconds on Rao and Cox pushed his wa y past Lee to take third. Thomas Eatman was m oving quickly through the pack 'a fter a poor start. Turning I:16 laps, Mclntyre sprinted home to his second win. Rao, two and a half seconds back, took second overa ll and first in Middleweight Su persport with Cox taking third overall for second in Middleweigh t. Eatman, riding with a cast on his left arm , took a well deserved third in class on his RZ350. I In Vintage ac tio n John Scott sho wed wh y he is the clas s cha mp with a wire-to-wire win over Steve May. Scott rode hi s Triumph T -120 to the fini sh line 12 seconds a hea d of May's SO H C H onda. Battling it o u t in thi rd pl ace for the ent ire race was Mike H a ra court a n d J i m · DeRosa . DeR osa led H ar acour r's Norton Atlas until lap five when DeR osa made a mi stak e. H ara co urt led th e next five wit h DeR osa's R5 Yamaha stuck to hi s back fender. McIntyre steadily pulled clea r of Lee as Ross put Mueller's GSXR 7SO back to thi rd on lap . two of the 10 la p sprint. By lap four McIntyre was ou t of reach but Mu eller, Lee and Ross were in a tight group wi th Scan Will ock moving in to join th e battle. Ross.
