Dom ok os whee lied over six cars for th e record , Sandell won th e Open Pro overa ll and th e $1500 Race of ' Champions and Emig dropped by to win both 125cc Am ateur mot es. Sandell went into th e fina le with a slim chance of passing point lead er Dave Newell for the Open class ti tle. His cha nces improved when he won rn oto one, whi le Newell pl aced th ird behind Derek Brown. Sandell gated first in moto two, ' with New ell in eig ht. Newell needed to finish second behind Sandellto win the cha m pionsh ip by one point. He had reached fourth by lap five, bu t cras hed o ut of contention. Sandell wo n the moto and the ti tle. -T im Buchli had a precarious point lead in the 250cc Pro class. He finished second behind Brown in moto one, whi le title challengers Corey Cope and Newell came in fifth and sixth, respectively. In ro u nd two, Buchli finished third behind j im Mitchell a nd Stacey Cook. Mitchell , with a 4-1 ta ll y, took th e overall ahead of Cook a t 3-2 a nd Buch li at 2-3. But Buch li had earned his fir st 250cc championship after winning four I25cc tit les in th e last two years . Cook entered the night with a big point lead in th e 125cc Pro class, a nd won the, main event a fter winning his qualifi er. In two weeks, he sho uld eas ily win the 125 and 250cc mo tocross titl es to become th e first rid er in Colorado histor y to claim three cham pio nsh ips in one yea r. Scott Fulcher had to fin ish 10th to win th e 80cc Expert title ove r Andy Atkins. H e won ro u nd one a hea d of Atkins , and the twoso me raced sideby-side in mot o two for four laps before Fulcher bai led. Lon nie T ucker jumped out front at the start of the first 125cc A moto, bu t Chuck Bell cut under to take over th e lead as they exited the first turn. Tucker stuck to Bell 's rear fender. and as they entered th e sweeper Epps zoomed up on them and cu t Tucker o u t of his second p lace ride. Epps poured th e pressure on as th ey left T ucker behind th en cut to the inside o f Bell a p proac h ing th e step-up jump a nd flew into the lead. Bell cranked it open, riding o n the ragged edge, not allowing Epps to get ou t of reach . Bell go t sideways in a turn o n th e sticky clay, st raigh tene d it o u t and moved right back in on th e lead er. Epps cr uised past the checkered flag with Bell moments beh in d. T uc ker said, " I rea ll y di dn' t ride like I should have. T he jetti ng was a lillie messed u p a nd I cou ld feel the lack o f power. T hey just got away from me." Berg did so b y beatin g o u t Tim Rutherford, In th e firs t mot o it was Tim Rutherford wi th th e ho lesh ot follow ed by Berg , Craig Hofmeister, . a nd Mar c Peters. Ha lfwa y through th e first lap Berg dropped his Kawasaki a nd was for ced to restart ba ck in fifth pla ce. Berg began to pi ck up his pace a nd ca tch the fast moving Rutherford. Whi le Berg was playing ca tch-u p , jim R u therford pa ssed Marc Peters who even tua lly dropped ba ck to seventh. At the end of th e ra ce it was the G ear Racewea rsp onsored Tim Ru therfor d with the win followed by Berg, Hofm eist er and j im Ruther ford. In th e seco nd moto it was Berg wh o grabbed the earl y lead . Berg, who is cu rre n tly leading the CMC points chase for the Dodge tru ck, was fo llowed by Tim Ru therford, Peters, ' a nd Hofmeister. On th e third lap Po sca 's fro nt whee l hi t a rock, sending him ou t o f control off of th e dro p-off. Kline, a lrea dy com mitted to the drop-off, land ed on top of Posca and h is bike sending h im lO the grou nd .
