Belgian Erik Geboers had o nce agai n offered RJ th e most opposition , but he tangled wit h Ital ian Maurizio Dolce in th e th ird encou nter after twice finishin g runner-up earlier in the day. Tha t seemed to leave th e way open for a o ne-two day for H onda USA, bu t Micky Dymon d, heading for a decisive fourth to add to hi s two thi rd s in th e first two rnotos, wash ed o ut on a patch of . wat er laid to comba t the threat of dust by th e high ly efficient Giuseppe Luongo O rganization and eventuall y had to charge hard in the final laps to snatch back third on th e day from Ross Pederson, the only one of the North American Yamaha trio to finish all three motos. Jeff Stanton and Keith Bo wen had both lost their hopes of a major score through DN Fs - Stanton going out of the second moto with a broken crank and Bowen exiting the first race with a n at rear ure. With Geboer s' cras h dropping him to sixth on th e day, it was Cagiva sta r Dave Strijbos who split th e Ameri can dominati on of the results with second overall aft er an impressive day which had onl y been spoiled by a lat e fall in the first m oro. Making his first a ppearance in such exa lted company, 125cc East Coast Su percross Ch am p ion Ronnie T ichen or rod e stylis hly all day to finish sevent h overa ll and ensu re Suzuki, for wh om Michele Rinaldi had fini shed fifth , of second on th e day in the manufacturers' stakes to th e H onda team. Johnson had made a poor start in th e first 30 minutes moto, languish ing in ninth spot aft er the initial sort out, while Geboers was quickly past Stanton and setting off after Dymo nd who had taken the holeshot. It was some time before RJ started to make progress, indeed Strijbos surged past the U.S. Champion before getting stuck for a time behind
