San Roman tops Jimmy Lynch Memo,.ial ST By Laura Tisinger BAKERSFIELD , CA, SEPT. 18 Eddi e San Ro man topped the 13-bike field of th e Veteran class co mpeti tors atop hi s 500 Ro tax at Bakersfield Speedway's Jimmy Lynch Memorial. J im my Lynch , a regular participant and clos e friend to many in the racing circl es, lost his life in an untimely and tragic accident. This race was held to honor jimmy's memory, and a t th e same tim e present the proceeds to hi s wife and daughter. As th e green waved, San Ro ma n shot off the line for the early lead in th e heat of th e Vets class . Garee McGuiness, Pa ul Cates and Greg Bill in gs followed in clos e p ursuit. Rand y G riffith m a de a " hard charging " three laps sprint, coming fro m the rear of the field to take the lead o n la p four. Den nis Allsworth set hi s sig hts o n th ird a nd diced wit h McG u in ess. Allswonh ga ined thir d briefly unti l McGuiness took the inside line to regain third. Griffith held on for the heat win , San Rom an claimed a safe second and McG uiness was next in for third. Allswort h and Ca tes rounded o ut the to p five. Aga in , as in the hea t, McGuiness and Cates fought peg-to-peg for second. Allsworth m oved under Cates for third while McGuiness was gaining ground on San Ro m an . Greg Billings mov ed up from sixth, pressuring Cates a nd even tu a ll y sli ppi ng by to gain fourth. San Roman held off McGuiness through the tight racing at the end for th e main event win. McGuiness sett led for second, Dennis Allsworth ca me . in for th ird . Billings and Cates rou nded out the to p five. Do nnie H arrell again domi nated the 500cc Pro class, winning both the h eat an d ma in event wi th awesome style. San Roman held second, and Jim Rosa raced thi rd un til lap three wh ere Rosa and J im H estil y moved up under San Roma n for second a nd third .
