CA, SEPT. 20 For th e second consecutive seaso n, " Flyin ' Mi ke" Faria too k the win in th e Coca- Cola Speed way Track Championship at Ch ris Agajanian's Asco t Sout h Bay Stadium. A large cro wd gathered a t the brightl y-lit facility and most of them figu red th a t th e wi n ner 's trophy wou ld go h ome wit h Bo bb y Schwartz. T he defending National Champion had an incredible year in Gardena , winni ng 17 of th e 33 shows held there in 1987. U nfortunatel y for Schwartz, it wasn' t his nig ht . Crowd favor i te " Sh o w t i m e" Bobby Ott delayed th e sta rt of the first heat a nd used up most of his two minutes but when he ca me o n to th e track, he was sensationa l and scored th e win over Robert Pfetzing des pi te the fact that hi s rear fender ca me loose lat e in th e event. Schwartz started hot enoug h by winning heat two while England's Phil Co lli ns came fro m third to first to wi n event th ree. Faria ended th e firs t ro u nd with a win over Ban Bast. The trac k was watered between th e first and secon d ro unds and that cost Schwartz. H e was coming from th e alwa ys-slick gate thr ee, and it was slicker than usual du e to the wat erin g. He was fourth off the line a nd never adva nced. Co llins took th e win ahead of Pfetzing and McBrid e. Ott had to work hard to get aro und Bast in event six and he did lat e in th e race. Ott's throttle th en stuck wid e ope n as he too k the checkered nag and he crashed hard in turn o ne. The popular star was shaken bu t he did man age to wa lk off under hi s own pow er. Oxl ey th en handed a loss to Faria in event seven . O tt a nd Collins were tied for th e lead after two rounds with six points whi le Ox ley a nd Faria were o ne poi nt back. Pfetzing was leading even t nine wh en hi s drive cha in snap ped on the second lap. That gave th e lead, eventual win and thre e poi nts to Oxley. Event 10 was to be a showdown between Faria and Ou bu t the latter had carbur etor prob lems and did n 't make the sta rt. It was ........ C'J .... V ..0 o .... u o Ed Castro won t his battle over Mike Faria at Ascot. but Faria won the war. t aking the track championship for the second year in a row. Faria, co mi ng from th ird to first , winn in g o ver Kei th Larse n a n d Schwartz. Co lli ns also won in ro und th ree and he was clearly the fastest rid er o n th e trac k. Ott had his problem s solved and came back to win heat 14 over T uff McBride a nd Oxley. That left Ott fans wo ndering what wo u ld have happened had he not had mechanica l ill s. Co llins drew sta rti ng posi tion I I. That meant he sta rted in gates three, four and two in h is first th ree rides. H is fina l two sta rts wo u ld come from the pole and with a perfec t score after th ree ro u nds. he was lookin g like the new champion. Collins had Ed Cast ro, Lo u is Kossuth and Faria outside of h im in . event II. The Englis h rider ga ted the field but his motor immediately began to misfire. Faria and Cas tro went by and Cas tro the n turned in an aggressive ride. He pinched Faria off aga inst th e walls and sla mmed the door o n h im o n the inside. Faria got the drive ou t of the fin al bend bu t it wasn't eno ug h. The aggressive rid e by Ca stro gave h im the win. Coll in s co llected zero . Faria came right back in even t 20 and all he had to do was post a win a nd the crown would be his for th e seco nd co nsecut ive year. H e got a miserable ga te but he shot insi de of Scotty Brown and Pfetzing as th ey ca me off tu rn two the first tim e and that was all she wrote. Faria a nd th e STP/Shoei lTsubaki/ Hi- Point/ Oi l. zall Jawa led the remainder of th e way for th e cham pionship . Ott won the next even t to wrap up seco nd with Collins, who looked to be th e winner less than a half hour before, scoring another zero and finishing co mp le te ly ou t of th e picture. Fari a took first place o n th e n ight and in the overall standi ngs of th e $10,000 Budweiser Series. Mean while, Larsen became the first rid er since Ron ni e Correy in 198 1 and 1982 to win th e Jun ior Natio na'l Championship two years in a row. Faria came into a nig h t with a three point lead over Bobby Schwartz in th e series. The best way for Faria, o n th e STPI Shoei/ O ilzalllTsubaki-1 Scott Goggles J awa , to sew up the crown would be to win all five of his races. H e did just tha t. Schwartz saw his hopes of winning th e cro wn slow ly sli p pi ng away in even t two. Faria easi ly wo n the first race of th e night and Schwartz was up in event two. Among the defending cham pion competi tors in tha t event was Alan "Crazy" Christian , who was onl y o ne poi nt beh ind Schwartz in th e overall standings.
