Four turns fro m th e fini sh Geboers turned on th e gas too ear ly in a turn, th e rear wh eel steppe d o u t a n d J ohnson pounced for yet another superb victo ry. After usin g a new line over th e spec tacu lar hillside jump to dem ote his rivals one after th e other, Strijbos was building up for a late challenge to Sta n ton's fourth u nti l he lost the front wh eel a lap and a half/from the end -and saw all of h is fin e work negat ed, as he d ropped down to seventh again . . Race two was less excit ing as Geboers and J ohnson quickly passed Fanton for th e lead a nd aft er five laps th e Ameri can assumed his cus tomary place at th e front. A minor error l ate on meant Geb oers had to battle hard to repul se Dymond as a ll three Hondas finished close together with Strijbos a lone fourth ahead of a close battle for fifth which Bowen even tually headed with a lat e pass o n Pederson as the Suzuki tr io of Tichenor, Bartolini and Rinaldi pushed them hard. Rinaldi led the third m ot o away but Johnson took him on a climb at the start of lap .two , only to be caught napping by the Italian who swept back around the outside a few turns later. Johnson quickly took control again, however, but he could never relax as Strijbos charged past Dymond, j obe, Pederson a n d Rinaldi to give chase. j ob e, eliminated from th e second race with a front puncture, spent the entire race biting at Pederson 's rear wheel, but Dymond had passed th em bo th before hi s cras h 10 minutes from the end. . Dolce had to seek medical atten tion to his arm and Geboers was a hopeless last before he could rejoin th e ra ce. Entering the last lap, Dym ond had caugh t up to the four-way battle for seventh between Tichenor, Bartolini, Dirkx and Bow en. H e demoted th e last-n am ed two to ensure th ird overa ll , but he would have needed th e di stant Corrado Maddii to beat Strijb osfor second on th e day.
