Bobby Schwartz won speedway mains at IMS and Costa Mesa. at Costa Mesa, and if he rides like he did tonight, the other riders w.i:ll be there just to battle for second. One of the other riders will be the 17:yearold Hamill and he will be making his National Championship debut. Schwartz, gating from number four, edged Steve Lucero out of the gate with "Flyin' Mike" Faria third. Faria knifed his way inside Lucero as they came off turn two on the opening lap and began to give the leader chase. Faria finally. got the drive to make a challenge on lap three. He attempted to make it a race for the lead by using the inside on the back chute but the Budweiser/ C.T.I. Brace/Silkolene/Cirello Racing/Bell Weslake of Schwartz was just too strong. . Schwartz was never able to run off wUb, the lead but then again Faria didn't have the power to challenge and he ended up a bike length back at the checkered flag. Brad Oxley finished third with Lucero taking home the fourth place paycheck. Hamill, off the 20, was unstoppable in the Handicap main. He guided the Canyon City Auto/STP/C.C.I Monrovia Diesel Weslake into the lead and held the point position all .the way. Ji!D Sisemore came up to challenge Hamill on lap two but couldn't force his way into the point position. After the challenge by Sisemore, Hamill and the Northern California rider moved away from the remainder of the eight-rider field. They were building up a lead and having a war for it at the same time. Sisemore contiually thrust his front wheel at Hamill but the ex-Duarte Sprocket fought him off every time. The race continued that way to the checkered flag and it was Hamill with Sisemore on his rear tire. Third went to Walt Farnum trailed by GaryHicks in fourth. Karl Sellenthin outdistanced Dan Fraley to win his (irst Costa Mesa main of the year in Third Division action. Third spot was taken by former BMX star Scott Clark. Steve Russell (Jaw) showed everyone the way around as he won the Support class main. Following Russell, who had his entire family in the stands, was Jason Chisql and 'Too Tall" Don Odom.
