Hart, McCormick top Oregon MX C'ship By Clay Light ALBA Y, OR, SEPT. 13 Grayson Hart and Jason McCormick were among the elite at the Oregon , State Motocross Championship, held at Albany SupercTOss. Hart topped a huge field of professionals in a combined Pro Championship class while McCormick won the 80cc Intermediate and 60cc Expert events. The best race of the day's program was the combined Pro Championship class; Up for grabs was a $500 purse. Tony Graves led the first moLO at the drop of the gate with Hart, who was making his Honda Support debut, ~iving chase. The duo' took the enure moLO to decide the outcome. Han pushed past, but began to tire and allowed Graves LO close a small deficit on the last lap. With the checkered £lag in sight, Graves made a spectacular move across the finish line to take the win with Hart, icky Blasedell, Gary Beyer and Dana Anderson filling the top five positions. Moto two saw Hart jumping into the lead on his Hillsboro Honda! PBIIShoei-supported CRSOO with Graves and Ron Sun in tow. Hart wasn't to be stopped in this moto and rode to a convincing win in the 20-minute plus two-lap event and took thee overall. Second in the moto and the overall went to Graves with Blasedell's consistent 3-3 postings netting third overall. Anderson took fourth via 4-5 rides and Beyer fifth. In the 125cc Pro class Graves dominated both motos to take a II overall, beating Beyer and Hart, who was third after 6-3 .performances. McCormick, easily LOpped goodsized fields of riders in the 60cc and 80cc classes. In the 60cc class, McCormick logged major air-time en-route to a double moLO demolition over intermediate Eric Burkinshaw and Todd Kibble. In 80cc action, Hondamounted Rich Browning was McCormick's closest competition. The Old Timer's are one dedicated bunch of "old men". For the big races such as this, they seem to come out of hibernation. Several impressive performances were logged during the day. "Blazin' Bill" Naylor (Yamaha) came out on LOp for the overallwin in .the Old Timers class and first Expert, while "Jammin' Jim" Newman and Mike Reuther topped the Intermediate and Junior portions, respectively. Gry Traglin (Kawl. lenatsch tops Willow YSRSO race By Terry· Whytal ROSAMO D, CA, SEPT. 13 MOLO-journalist ick Ienatsch was today's big winner at the SMXsanctioned YSR50 mini road race at Willow Springs. Ienatsch first bested a tough field of Middleweight Advanced riders then ran away with the Advanced Modified win on board his stock machine. "I hope it gave 'em something to think about," commented Ienatsch later about his Modified win on a stock YSR. In Novice Heavyweight action Tom Clark was the rider to beat but 00 one was able LO as he swept both heats over Mike Sokoloff. Clark and Sokoloff spent most of the day within just a few feet of each other and Sokoloff nearly threw a bike away several times as he tried to find a way past the faster starting Clark. Sokoloff had to settle for second overall with Russ Kurisu taking third. The Novice Middleweight Division One race went to Russ Bond who put together two nearly flawless rides to sweep the class. Second went to Tom Cosley with Daniel GrOll placin~ third. oVlce Middleweight Division Two was a bit more hectic as the lead changed many times in each heat. Chris Roldan outpointed his rivals to take the win over second place Steve George. Jeff Wolfe rounded out the top three. Incredibly, in only her second YSR50 race, motocrosser turned road racer Vicky Jackson topped the Novice Lightweight event. A native of Yorkshire, England, Jackson diced her Bellflower Yamahasponsored machine LO a first heat victory and backed it up with a second heat third despite tangling with hay bales and having to come from behind to run with the lead duo. Scott Charles' 4-1 score gave him second overall with Juan Gonzales taking third. Jackson was back on the attack for the Women's race as she swept both heats to take the victory. Her top competition came from Sue Sittman who had to settle for second as she rode with a banged up knee. Jolene Motocrosser-turned-road racer Vicky' Jackson won the Novice Ughtweight division during the YSR50 mini road race at Willow Springs. Kuritsu took second ahead of Ellen Taylor with Tara Seslar rounding out the top five. The Lightweight Advanced class featured a close running duel between Dennis Horton and Henry Rodarte. MITCHELL, AL, SEPT. 20 Honda rider Steve Saunders posted a 2-1 moto tally to take first overall in the 125cc B class at round two of Ft. Mitchell's Fall MX Series, and Columbus House of Yamaha-backed ~hannon Brooker swept both Senior Mini motos LO maintain his lead in the point standings. After leading the first l25cc B moto from start to finish, point leader Tony Bishop faced his stiffest challenge to date in the second heat. Kawasaki mounted Bishop grabbed the hoIeshot with Saunders hard on his heels. For five exciting laps Bishop held his ground on the straights and kept Saunders at bay in the turns. On the last lap, Saunders pulled even and dove underneath Bishop to take the win. In I25cc C racing, Steve Greer held the early lead in the first molO. Honda rider Casey Hoover passed Greer over the staircase jump and went on to win. Morel Barr finished second. Hoover took command of the second race and led from start LO finish. Davis wins Dixie Speedway Regional ST By Mark Mitchell WOODSTOCK, GA, SEPT. 20 Willie Davis took the lead in turn three on the first lap of the main event and never looked back to take the win at Dixie Speedway's Regional Short Track, held in Woodstock. Davis crossed the line six bike 'Iengths ahead of David Hebb, who was followed closely by David Miller, Tammy Kirk, and Bobby Lewis. Expert heat number one saw plenty of action after Garth Brow got the holeshot, followed by Miller and Bobby Nichols. Miller put the pressure on Brow until turn three on lap· five when he finally slipped by for the lead. Miller went on to win followed by Brow and Lewis. In Expert heat number two, local favorite Kirk, the only female AMA Expen in America, got the holeshot and held off Davis in the fastest heat of ~e day LO take the pole in the roam. The 12-lap Pro-Am main was won by David Reeves with Mark Van Hausen second and Micky Rusdon third. Reeves came off the line third but quickly put the move on both Kenny Barr and Rusdon on the back straight during lap one and never looked back. David Reeves' win put him one point ahead of Van Hausen in the regional points' chase. . The 14-lap Junior main was won by Steve Saunders, who was followed home by Tommy Majeski and Wes Long. Saunders led from wire-towire with Majeski nipping at his heels the entire race. In the l6-lap Expen main, polesitter Kirk got the holeshot foHowed closely by Miller, Davis and Brow. Davis made a strong move in turn three on the first lap to take the lead by passing both Miller and Kirk at once. Davis then opened a six bike length lead and held on for the win. Back in the pack, Hebb was making his mQve after coming off the line -in fifth position. He quickly picked off Brow anq Miller and set his sights on Kirk. Hebb caught Kirk in turn three on lap two and passed her easily, but could never reel in Davis.
