Second pia« went to Ezerins, with Honda rider Eric Parker brin$lng in third Heyden dommated the second mOlO, shooting out of the start and snatching the holeshot with £lerins and Parker following. The Torque Center rider immediately established a good lead, easily winning the championship title. "It feels great, I'm so happy," said an ecstatic Heyden, "my dad and I make a good team." Heyden also entered the ~25cc class on his 80cc Kawasaki motorcycle. In the first moto Jeff Blaha pulled the holeshot with Heyden right on Blaha's rear fender. Blaha and Heyden duked it out for the lead with Heyden making several attempts to pass until a hairpin turn that cost Heyden a couple of bike lengths. B'laha could not shake off Heyden, but held the lead for the win. Darrin Hill who had a bad start, worked his way to a fifth on lap one but could not catch up to the leaders and finished third. The second moto was tense as Don Gray snared the lead with Heyden charging right on his heels, closely followed by Darrin Hill and Blaha. The order changed several times· throughout the moto and at the finish. Hill brought in first for first overall, Blaha finished less than a second later for a second place and second overall, while Heyden stormed in third on the heels of Blaha for a third overall. II The last. race o( the rain-shortened Syracuse Speed Week at the Cayuga County Fairgrounds Speedway saw Canadians Jon Cornwell and Jean Bouret win the Expert and Junior finals with David Reev~s toppin~ the Pro-Ams. Thirty-five Pro-Am nders were on hand looking to qualify to ride the Syracuse Mile. Todd Bridges led the Pro-Am final the first four laps but Reeves shoved his Ellis Reeves/Gary Nixon/Rod Farris/Richard Reeves-sponsored Rotax in front to stay on lap five of the is-lap race. Bill Bromley held second early but dropped to third. followed by Jason Fletcher and Brian Tillson. At the halfway point Reeves and Bridges had command of their positions while Mike McDonnell .had moved up to third. The checkered flag came out for Reeves over Bridges, McDonnell, Bromley, Tillson and Fletcher. . Bill Newkirk got the holeshot in the Junior final and led the first two laps but bike problems dropped him back and out by lap five. Craig Estelle took over until lap seven when Bouret put his Duval Perf.! Deeley,(Forspo-sponsored HarleyDavidson in· the lead over Estelle, Majeski, Kiser, Saunders and Bibeau. The final order was set except for Jon Cornwell (25) took the lead from Lea Washbon (11 H) and went on to win the Expert final at the Cayuga County Fairgrounds. Bryan Villella who moved from deep in the pack to sixth. Les Washbon led the first lap of the Expert final but Cornwell blasted his Deeley H-D Central Ontario Cycle/Champion/Shoei/Silkolene/ Treen/Blackfoot Cycle-sponsored Harley-Davidson into the lead. Washbon held second over Duane Veeder, Rod Farris, David Miller and Keith Jacobson while pole sitter Dan Ingram, who had bent a valve on the warm-up lap, faded from the race. Veeder gained second on lap five but was a good distance behind Cornwell, and Farris passed Washbon. At the halfway mark Miller was fourth and the top five positions were set. Huff hot at White City HM By Bill Holt WHITE CITY, IL, SEPT. 11 Audie Huff Jr. and his Greyboy/ Gardener H-D styled to convincing victories in both the Pro-Am race and the Open to make him the only double winner on the big oval at the Midstate M/C c1ubgrounds during the latest round of the DC Cycle/ Super Seer sponsored D-17 Dirt Track Series. Rick Anders and Gene Gaigac fought over the second spot in the Pro-Am final with the nod going to Anaers at the checkers. Greg Logue shot into the early lead of the Open final and held off Huff (or three laps on the tightly grooved oval but Huff snuck underneath in turn two to take the lead (or good on the (ourth lap. All Logue could do was try to keep it close as Greg Sauder slipped in for third. The 50s opened the program and the race ended up being two battles. Shannon Wright got off the line first but it didn't take long for Shane Garrisson to work his way byeand take a lead that Wright was never able to overcome. The battle for third was won by Mike Hall. He held off the charges of Quint Eslinger for that spot. Scott Huff put, his Grayboy/ Gardener Kawasaki on the line for the 125cc final and ran away from Shane Landers and David Stanfield for the win. Steve Hall and hi DC Cycle/ -Prairie Cycle Honda took the holeshot and the win away from Paul Morgen in the 80cc final. Heat winners Scott Huff and Charles Hall lined up side-by-side on the groove for the start of the 250cc final and the scramble for the lead exiting turn two saw Huff again in the lead. Huff, his first time on a 250, held off the relentless charges of Ken Hall and Doni Holeman to nail down the top spot with Ken Hall taking second over Holeman. Dana McNeil and his DC Cycle Honda kept Charles Hall and Danny Carter behind him for the fourth spot. The Senior final saw Les Eslinger grab the holeshot in front of Bill Holt and Jim Kidman on the Granite City Honda. Eslinger slowly pulled away for the win with Kidman erupting from turn two on the lap before the white flag to take second for good from Holt, who kept Dave . Stanfield and Barry Roberts behind him while trying to keep up with the "Old Man". By the time that the 500cc final began the track had developed a very narrow groove. Reed Benilino blasted the Bertilino Product H-D into the lead coming out of the second tum and was never headed, but he did spend the rest of the race holding off Bart Schmulbach and Rick Knuth. II Jim Heyden ran away from the competition in both 80cc Mini class motos to clinch his first Suzuki Stadium Motocross Championship Race Series title under the lights at Lake Geneva Raceway. Despite having a large point spread enabling him to wrap up the title without en tering eIther motos, Heyden wanted to wrap up the championship and his final season in the 80cc Mini class in style, which he did. California Junior Mark Corsetti celebrated his 18th birthday with a win in the Junior final and Texan Alan Powers took the Pro-Am final. Texter set fast Ex~t time. Scott Saunders was the qwckest Junior in time trials. Pro-Am heats fell to Todd Bridges, Danny Koelsch, Mik~ McDonnell, Steve Longo and Powers. The Last Chance semi was won by Dave Lloyd. Scott Saunders passed Kris Kiser' to win the first Junior heat. Tom Majeski led Paul Crumling all the way in the second heat. Corsetti was the easy winner of heat three over Craig EsteJle. Texter led the first Expert heat all the way with Brian Bonesteel in second over David Miller and Gary Conkling. Don Estep was the runaway winner of heat two. Dan Ingram held down second over Eric Rausch and Steve Burkholder.
