Sweaney sweeps Bakersfield ST By Laura Tisinger BAKERSFIELD, CA, SEPT. 4 KTM-mounted Stan Sweaney swept up wins in the Veterans class heat and main event tonight at Bakersfield Speedway. Sweaney pulled the holeshot in the heat but had to keep Dan Dowding at bay during some taunting competition. Mark Ludvigson and Greg Klassen also raced close for third and fourth. On lap three Dowding slipped under Sweaney to hold the lead briefly, but Sweaney returned the favor and regained the lead on the next lap. As the white flag came out Klassen took second and was followed by Paul Cates as Dowding dropped back to finish fourth at the flag. Sweaney took the checkers first for the win, Klassen came in for second and Cates third. Klassen wheelied as he got the holeshot for the main event. Sweaney 'followed in second as Cates and Garee McGuiness raced for third and fourth. Sweaney came in low and careful on lap two for the lead. Klassen's 490cc Yamaha just didn't seem to have enough to regain the lead and Sweaney went on to claim the win. Klassen came in a very close second: Cates and McGinness took third and fourth, not more than a few feet separating them from the winner. Although Cates took third, he has wrapped up the Point Championship for the best 10 o.ut of 12 series. In the 500cc Sportsman class heat Scott Creager held his holeshot lead only briefly. Chad Ellis, coming off the lirie in third, wasted no time in pulling past Tim Woodard. Ellis then used the high outside line for the moves against Creager. Meanwhile, back in fourth Ludvigson was feeling the pressure exerted by Don Glendening. As the checkers flew Ellis took the win over Creager while Woodard took third and Ludvigson held off Glendening, for fourth~ Patrick Bride timed his start perfectly, as he stole the lead followed by Woodard and Creager. Creager blew by both Bride and Woodard for the lead using the back straight. Glendening moved around Woodard and began a peg-to-peg battle with Bride for second. Glendening pulled up to second at the white flag but as everyone charged for the checkers Creager took the win, Woodard had regained second and Ellis hung tight for third. Glendening and Bride rounded out the top five. Creager wrapped up the Point Championship for the season. Hale and Rosa were sliding side-by-side and during lap four Hestily and Mayfield got underneath. Rosa moved back to second taking the low inside and powering on to the sweeper. Reynolds claimed the heat win over Rosa, Hestily and M~yfield and Dan Cattoon. Mayfield, and Cattoon began the main event charge followed by Sean Sweaney, but the red came out for a restart. Sweaney took the lead with Cattoon, Reynolds al\,d Hesily hot on track, in the restart. Within a lap Cattoon made his way to the front, and Reynolds followed suit and passed Sweaney for second.
