IDeA National Championship Drag Race Series: Round 5 After a slack chain sheared away his countershaft sprocket during the opening round of eliminations in the Funny Bike class, Kizer posted a 7.244/184.42 in round two and owned the number one spot for the' rest of the day. Kizer easily defeated Doug James. of Ohio in the quarterp,nals, posting a 7.456/170.77 to James' 8:115/ 117.95. South Carolina's Bobby Baker claimed the second· quarterfinal with a 7.341/180.36, while Bill Timmons' bike broke as he left·the llole. Mike Reimer took a bye run in the third quarterfinal, turning an 8.468/156.52. Two Indiana racers faced off in the fourth quarterfinal with Steve Tracy, running a spare engine,· comihg out on top with a 7.98/171.75; Chris Iovine shut down with a 10.94/74.56. Kizer caught Baker sleeping out of the hole in the first Funny Bike semi. Baker pulled ahead of Kizer near the end of the run, only to have his transmission get stuck in gear. Kizer passed him to take the win with a 7.24/182.92; Baker finished with an 8.282/112.07. Tracy cut the best light - exactly one one-hundredth of a second quicker - when he and fast qualifier Kizer left the hole in the Funny Bike final, and the race was neck in neck all the way to the end of the quarter 'Kizer tops Mr. Turbo Summer Nationals By Nina Holmes UNION GROVE, WI, AUG 22-23 Texan Terry Kizer topped the Funny Bike division at the Mr. Turbo Summer Nationals in Union Grove, powering his' blown nitrous Orient Express Suzuki past Indiana's Steve Tracy. Kizer won the Funny Bike final at Great Lakes Dragway with 'a 7.291-second, 168.85-mph run. 22 After almost two years of trying, Star Racing's George Bryce of Georgia finally took home a win in the IDBA Pro Stock division. He defeated the fairing-equipped Kawasaki Ninja of Florida's Dave Schultz in the final by posting an 8.372/ 157.61 run. Schultz finished with a quickertime but was disqualified for' red-lighting the start. . Kawasaki-mounted Bryan Bennett of DeSoto, Illinois, qualified sixth fastest and took ou~ two of the toul1;hest compemors In the held to WIn the Pro Compo c!ass at Umon Grove. He beat OhIO s Steve Drake in the semifinal with a 7.964/168.22 and defeated Kawasaki rider Floyd Huntz in the final with an 8.038/ 168.22. mile. When the smoke- had cleared, Kizer had claimed his second IDBA win in a row with a 7.291/168.85 run, and runner-up Tracy had turned in . his fastest pass ever with a 7.38/ 180.12. Florida's Superbike Mike Keyte piloted his big Suzuki to the number on~ qualifying spot in the very ·competitive Pro Stock division, where the top five qualifiers finished within a tenth of a second of each other. Suzuki-mounted Bryce, who's only been racing In the Pro Ste><;k division for a year and a half, faced a formidable foe in the semifinal Keyte, fast qualifier and Pro Stock. point leader. Bryce scored an upset when he started five-hundredths of a second quicker than Keyte, clocking in with a 8.25/159.85. Keyte went out with a quicker 8.23/159.57, but reaction time cost him the race. Florida's Charlie Gressman and Schultz, who were separated by only a tenth of a second in qualifying, faced off in the second Pro Stock semifinal. Gressman's Suzuki collected a red Ii~ht at the start, leaving Schultz and hiS Kawasaki to take the win with an 8.257/161.57; Gressman's red-lighted run was clocked at 8.346/158.45.
