to spare and refrained 'from further attempts as the approach be.came too rough. The battle for the win saw Hughes closing in and battling with Dollansky with Scon and Pat Riley trailing. Hughes took over the lead at the checkered with Scott dropping. Dollansky to third. Action in the second moto saw Schmit run away from the troops once again. Hughes once again masered his CR250 to take the win. Dollansky and Scott reversed their finishing positions and Riley repeated for fourth, giving Honda the top four placings. Phil Dutcher took both wins in the Senior Ex.pert class. The first win was easy, but after awakening in the hospital due to a collision with an out-of-control bike he returned to win the second moto at a slightly reduced pace. Results Craig Davis (83) pursues Todd Campbell in the 250cc Pro class at Perris. Both riders suffered mechanical problems and DNF. Musgrave victorious at Perris Motocross By David Procida 32 PERRIS, CA, SEPT. 6 Kawasaki-mounted Willy Musgrave earned the overall victory in the 250cc Pro class at the second round of the Western USA Championship put on by the California Racing Club at Perris. Musgrave picked his way through several riders to win the first molO, then led molO two from start to finish. In the first molO, Pro-Cycle KTMmounted Todd Campbell read the gate perfectly for the holeshot with Honda pilot Rick Gasper and Yamaha Support rider Craig Davis in close company. The top three stayed together until lap three, when Gasper dropped back into the pack with Musgrave and Kenny Zahrt closing in on the leaders. At the front, Campbell and DaVIS were engaging in a cat and mouse game where the KTM. would outpower Davis' YZ, only to have the Yamaha make up the distance in the tight sections. Musgrave was passed by Zahn but found an opening in the switch back and dove under Zahrt to regain third. Campbell was still holding off Davis, but the KTM was now misfiring in the upper RPM range. Musgrave moved up behind Davis, making it a three-way baule for first. Davis was trying to pass Campbell and contact between the two riders was witnessed. Then Davis overshot a corner, giving Campbell a liule breathing room that only lasted until the next lap when Davis outpowered the ill-sounding KTM down the main straight. Musgrave also passed Campbell as the KTM came to a stop with mechanical problems, and was now closing on Davis. Musgrave made his move and passed Davis in the esses, then Davis came to a SlOp moments later with fuel line problems, handing second place to Zahrt. Running in third was Wade Morlock. Musgrave enjoyed a big lead and styled lO the checkered. In mOlO.two Musgrave jumped in to the lead with Zahrt and Davis rounding the corner in second and third. On lap three, Morlock moved past Davis and closed in on Zahrt, while Musgrave pulled away. Halfway through the race Musgrave had oPened up a ~O-second lead, while the heat was on Zahrt, who was being chased by Morlock. The duo diced heavily for the next three lap while Davis closed to within two bike lengths' of Morlock. On lap nine, Davis made his move on Morlock and set his sights on Zahrt, but Zahrt held off the hard-charging Davis. Musgrave took the win and the overall with Zahrt taking home second place money and Morlock capturing third, via a 3-4 malO score. Results WMN tNT: 1. Dana Evenson; 2. Lo,i Hedstrom. WMN NOV: 1. Roy Fisher took over first with Allen Yarrow in second over John Hlebo. Yarrow got around Fisher coming out of .turn six in lap three to take over first, and HJebo passed Fisher on the outside of the tree turn on the last lap to take over second. In the main, Yarrow grabbed the holeshot and stayed there throughout the race with Hlebo right behind him in second. In the 80cc Expert heat race Jake Zemke got the holeshot with Herbie Callen grabbing the second spot ahead of David Sanchez. Sanchez got by Callen to take over second going into the tree turn then Matt Wait got Olllen also and started pushing hard on Sanchez for second, but just couldn't quite get there before the checkered flag. In the main event, Callen got the holeshot with Wait second, Sanchez third and Zemke fourth. Wait managed to pass Callen on the outside of turn five and shut the door on him in the next turn, then Wait started to fly and extended his lead over thepack. On the sixth lap Sanchez passed Callen in the infield then fell, moving Callen back to second with Zemke now in third. Sanchez was up and back on the bike quick enough to maintain fourth while Chad McBride was fifth at the checkered flag. In the 500cc Open Expert main, Robert Damron shot off the line with Bobby McDowell and Mark Key right with him. McDowell stayed in second for awhile until Larry Staggs bullied his way through the pack, came into the tree turn too deep and center punched McDowell, knocking them both out of their positions.
