Jason Anderson (9) and Lence Lene.ave (19) battle for third in the 125cc Expert class at the Alaska State MX Championship Series. David Aldana. racing for only the fourth time since his injury at Nelson Ledges. won the 600cc Modified Production race at Willow Springs. Vreeke scores at Willow Springs RR By Valerie Peeler 28 RO AMOND, CA, SEPT. 13 In a return to racing after a layoff of over five years, Honda CB600 Hurricane-mounted Ken Vreeke was fir t among the 600cc Stock class to cro s the Willow Springs International Raceway finish line at the ARRA's seventh race of the season. Though absent from racing, Vreeke ha kept his skills sharp through his employment at Cycle magazine. Despite being gridded third to la t in the 23-rider field, he was first out of turn two, followed by Art Kawaguchi on another Hurricane. Kawaguchi kept his eye on Vreeke up until the back straight where Vreeke pulled even farther away, claiming enough of a lead by the end of the first lap that the outcome was never in doubt. Yamaha FZ600 riders Bret Meacham and points leader jeff Brinda, who had crashed in the FormulaTwo race only an hour earlier and received the spares he needed from Meacham. diced their way through the pack and moved around Kawaguchi when he faltered a bit in windy turns eight and nine.. With Vreeke too far ahead for their consideration, Meacham and Brinda continued the struggle over second place. At one point, Brinda passed on the front straight and ran off the track to avoid hiuing Meacham as he was blown sideways. Brinda completed the pass in the dirt, kept his bike on its wheels, and merged back onto the track before flinging it into tum one. Kawaguchi ran a lonely fourth for almost the entire race, too far behind the dispute over second to take advantage of Meacham's running out of gas on the la t lap and coasting acro the finish line. Behind Kawaguchi wa Kent Kunitsugu who had managed to move his Hurricane up about one position per lap throughout most of the race. Kawaguchi wa unaware of anyone approaching him until the latter part of the last lap and was just able to defend hi position, crossing the finish line before Kunil ugu. But position changes didn't end when the checkered flag came out. Alan Smith, who had fjnished in II th and had started the day tied with AI Gana for second in the point standings, protested all riders finishing in front of him who had removed their fairing lowers, a chan e proh- ibited under ARRA rules. Six riders - Ken Vreeke, Art Kawaguchi, Kent Kunitsugu, Al Garza, Ashley Kishind and Ken Peters - were disqualified. Most of the disqualified riders were surprised, saying that the rule has been overlooked for the past two years and riders have regularly removed the lowers on extremely windy days in an effort to keep their bikes from being lifted up in fa t turns eight and nine. Vreeke was able to bring home a trophy in his econd clas of the day, the 600cc Modified Production race, but it was for second. This time he had to contend with long-time veteran David Aldana, entered in his fourth race since his injury last year in the 24-hour at Nelson Ledges. In a move that made sponsors Shoei, Dunlop, Kal-Gard, Z Leathers and mechanic Tom Houseworth happy, Aldana launched away in an excellent start and maintained his dominance until the checkered flag was brought out for him. 80stard blasts ArgylMX By Nuklear Neukam DIXON, CA, SEPT. 6 Walnut Creek HondaiMoto-X Fox/ RedIine/Rock Oil-supported Terry Bastard dominated the 125cc Pro class today at Argyll Park's CMC motocross race. In the first moto Honda-mounted Greg Tirheimer shot into the lead at the start but after a couple of laps Bostard had his Honda around and into the lead As Tirheimer started to fade O'Neal/Marin Motorsports Kawasaki-mounted Sean Conley closed in. Conley passed into second but soon crashed Bastard stayed out front for the win as Tirheimer took second. Kurt jorgensen brought his Honda in for third as Conley remounted for a fourth place finish. Moto two looked like it was going to be all Bostard's but, while out front leading, he crashed and was about a half-a-Iap down from the leaders. Tirheimer was out front with Conley in second but Bostard was hooking hi Honda in overdrive and soon worked his way into third and started closing on Conley. Coming down off the big hiIJ and into a hair-pin Bostard made his move on Conley. As they started over the rockers they banged bars and Bostard moved into second. Within a lap Bo tard was on Tirbeimer and made the pa s over the hump-jump in front of the spectator stands. The crowd went wild as Bostard took over first where he stayed for the win and the overall. Tirheimer held on for another second and second overall.
