Oxley wins at Speedway US~ By Scott Daloisio VICTORVILLE, CA,SEPT. 12 "Rad" Brad Oxley carne through for hIS second Scratch main win of the 1987 season at Speedway USA In Victorville, California~ Seconds later, while staging for the Handicap malO, for the second night ina row, Oxley lost a primary chain and was forced from the event. Oxley and his Coors/KLOS 95.5 FWCirello Racing/Qualier State/ Scott Goggles Weslake made the Scratch main along with Steve Lucero, Gary Hicks and Rob Pfetzing. The start of the main saw Gary Hicks go 'down by himself in turn one and out came the red. Everyone restarted and Lucero shoved his Weslake into the lead ahead of Oxley Hicks and Pfetzing. Lucero held th~ top spot until turn three of the opening lap when Oxley went to the inside of him. Lucero did a 180 and ended up .in the crashwalL At the same time that Oxley was challenging Lucero, Pfetzing moved past Hicks but that is as far as he got. Oxley never even bobbled and 'he took his second win of the year by a comfortable margin. In between the Scratch and Handicap mains Bobby Stillwell won his 'first ever speedway main in the Support class. Robert Salsbury took second. The Handicap main got underway without Oxley and "Too Tall" Don Odom, in his first ever Division One main, raced into the lead. Odom, at 6'2", is !lot the size of your average' speedway rider but ~e is fast a~d that point was proved 10 the malO as he held down the point position until the end of the third circuit when Hicks went by. Hicks and the Modular Casework Systems/STP/Quaker S'tate/Milne Brothers/Flanders Weslake quickly pulled away from the pack. Odom did a wild wheelie in the next bend and even though be made a miraculous save, it put him out of contention. It also slowed Lucero who was just behind the lanky rider. Hicks was gone and ready to count the money. Farnum was still battling for a top three finish when his motor seized on lap three and he came to an abrupt and spectac'ular halt. The checkered came out with Hicks taking an easy win over Pfetiing and Schwartz. . Results SCRATCH: 1. Brad Oxley (Wes); 2. Robert Pfetzing (Wes); 3. Gary Hicks (Wes); 4. Bobby Schwartz (Wes).. II "I am seeing stars," said Mike Faria as he squinted in the dark of the Orange County Fairgrounds pits. "When I crashed I was ri.llht up there in the stars. They were fIght next to me." Faria 'was refering to a crash in a heat race during the final round of the 1987 National Championship Senes. Even though he had taken a heavy blow to the head, he sot up and won the heat. Later 10 the evening he won the main. The final round of the National Championship Series usually has some drama as riders fight for the last spots in the October National Championship. This year, on paper, It looked as though that wouldn't happen but by night's end, one ridei' did what many thought was impossible and made his way to the National lineup. Three rounds of heats began the night and only "Showtime" Bobby Ott emerged from them with a perfect nine point score. Next in line were Faria and Bobby Schwartz with eight points each. FaJia's problems came in his second heat when he was hit by Gary HIcks 10 turn three. Faria went down hard and struck his head on the track. He got up and, even though he was rather shaky, won the rerun over Dubb Ferrell, Scott Brant and Hicks. "Rad" Brad Oxley took the first semi over Alan Christian. Faria wobbled out to his bike and then won the second semi over Rob Pfetzing whIle Schwartz won the. third one from Shawn McConnell. The fourth semi provided the interest. Eddie Ingels came into the flight holding down the last spot for the National but he wasn't here tonight. Tuff McBride had to score nine points to tie Ingels and 10 to pass him. After the heats McBride had six points. He had to take a win or second i6 his semi to unseat Ingles. He started on the outside and momentarily held the lead on lap one but then he settled into second and earned three more points. Those three points brought him level with Ingels and the worst he could do in the consolation was score a point so he had knocked Eddie Ingels out of the National. .When the tapes went up for the main Schwartz gated Ott but Faria, GARDENA, CA, SEPT. 10 Crowd favorite "Show time" Bobby Ott made his first trek of 1987 to the Scratch main victory circle at Chris Agajanian's Ascot South Bay Stadium. Ott was joined on the victory podIUm by LOUIS Kossuth, who lived to tell of his win in a Handicap main that was highlighted by several violent crashes. After his serious crash the previous even 109, everyone in the pits had their jaws drop when Bobby Schwartz showed up at Ascot. The defending National Champion limped from his van and parked his bikes in the pits for a night of racing at Ascot where he has seldom been defeated in 1987. Ott and his Bud Light/Cirello Racing/STP/Arai/Jones' Goggles Godden came into the main undefeated. There he had to meet up with Rob P.fetzing, Phil ColJins and, quite unbelIevably, the battered Schwartz. Schwartz had the pole for the main and when the tapes blasted up he pushed his Weslake into the lead ahead of Pfetzing and Ott. Ott was on the move and he quickly picked off Pfetzing and as they carne off turn four on the first circuit, he went under Schwartz for the lead. Once the white-leathered Ott was at the head of the pack, he was gone. When the checkered flag finaUy ended the event, it was "Showtime" winning by nearly a half straight over Schwartz, who turned in an incredible performante. Collins ended up third with Pfetzing getting the wrap up. . The Handicap main featured a number of the wild crashes. The first occurred off turn four on the first lap and it included eventual winner Kossuth. The race was red-nagged and a complete restart was ordered. The second 'attempt to run the event featured the most spectacular crash of the night as "Fast" Eddie Castro's bike flew high into the air. Scotty Brown, who was running behlOd Castro when the incident started, said, "I had to duck. His bike was over my head." The third try to run the event featured another wild crash. Ott went down in the middle of the back chute and Jimmie O'Dell apparently didn't see the red flag. He clipped the fallen bike and sailed through the air injuring his arm. The fourth time the event was started proved to be the charm. Kossuth, off the 40, piloted his bent bike into the lead just ahead of Jimmy Gentile and Brown. Brad Oxley, also off the 40, began moving his way' past the traffic. He moved into third on lap three and one lap later all that separated him and Kossuth was real estate. Oxley closed on the leader and tie made a challen~e on lap .seven. He tried the high hne but Kossuth, on the NJK/Arai Jawa, shut the door. Oxley switched his plan and went low but it still wasn't enough. Oxley made one last ditch effort on the outside but it wasn't to be. Kossuth had his name stamped all over the main and he took his second South Bay Stadium win in less than a month. Oxley. took second with Pfetzing third. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Ott (Gdn); 2. Ott, Faria dominate IMS Speedway By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDI 0, CA, SEPT. 9 It was Bud Light Fox Night at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway s'o it was only fitting that "Show time" Bobby Ott, who is sponsored by Bud Light, won the four-lap, Cycle Rider, Inc. Scratch malO event. Ott has been hot and cold throughout the season but he was hOtter than ever in front of his sponsors. His performances may have been OVt:T shadowed by the seemingly devastatmg crash of Bobby Schwartz in the same race. . The Schwartz incident occured oU turn two on the opening lap. While running second, his tire hooked up and send him straight. He did a quick wheelie and clipped the rear tire of leader Mike Faria. Schwartz then straightened out and drove into the wall with a tremendous impact. The carbon fiber brace that Schwartz wears oil his left knee broke and was sticking up in his leathers. That gave the impression that the defending National Champion had suffered a broken leg when, in fact, the brace (Schwartz is sponsored by c.T.1. who manufacture the braces) saved him from serious injury. He was down for qUIte some tIme but be. did manage to walk off under his own power. The race restarted and Ott, off the pole, led it wire-to-wire, much to the delight of the fans. Alan Christian bit the dust before the end of the opening circuit and that left just Ott and Faria to battle for first. Ott, on the Bud Light/Cirello Racing/STP/ Arai/Jones Goggles Godden, took the win by four lengths. Faria may have taken second in the Cycle Rider, Inc. Scratch main but when the checkered came down in the Handicap main he was all alone in the point position. Scott Brant grabbed the lead off the start and he had Walt Farnum and Billy Hamill as his early pursuers: Faria' had to bring the STP/ Shoet/Scott Goggles/Bill's Pipes/ Tsubaki ]awa from the back yardage' and he let the riders at the front of the pack sort themselves out before making his move. Hamill advanced to second, ahead of Farnum, before the end of the first lap but he couldn't make up much ground on he YOl\ng leader. Faria came charging on' the third circuit and moved into second. The popular nder used lap four to close in on Brant and he pulled up to his rear Ure at the end of the fifth revolution. As they entered turn one on the next lap, Faria went inside Brant and he emerged with the lead as they rocketed down the back chute. Faria's pass was all it took and he led the remainder of the way for his seco'nd IMS Handicap main win of the year. Brant hung on to second with Hamill taking the third-place spot.
