May moves at Tallahassee MX By Athie Sanders TALLAHASSEE, FL , AUG. 23 Earl May claimed the overall win in th e Open Mon ey classes during round o ne of H yman Myers ' Budw eiser-sponsored Southeastern Championship Seri es. Bobb y J ay Mann shot out front at th e start of th e first moto bu thad Kelley right on his tail. Kell ey attempted to pass Mann several times during the first lap, but Mann sta yed on the throttle and kept th e door ShUL Mann rode on me ragged edge and when he got slightly out of shape in some whoops Kelley loomed o n by, then p ulled a slight lead . Mann charged but was not set up for a small jump and took a spill. Earl "May, ridin g right beh ind .h irn, cu t by to take over the second p lace positio n. Rick Chew rode in third. Near the en d of the moto May moved in on the leader, but no t close enough to be a threat. _ . Mann said, " I didn't have up enough speed. The fall wasn't mat bad. It 's just that I stuck my arm out as the bike was tilting over , and the wa y I" ca u g h t m yself broke the bones. . " If Mann hadn 't crashed, it wo uld have been a real close race ," said Kelley. Kell y was,out front a t the start of mo to two but went down. May and Chew flew past. Kell ey later said, " I started losing co nt ro l wh en I hit a rut that wasn 't th ere th e moto befor e. I th ought I was go ing to save it, but I cou ld n 't bring it o n o u t. I hit th e last wh oop, and th at was all she wrote." After remounting, Kelley charged. He cu t around Chew then sta rted to reel in th e leader. May held on to go in for the win, forcing Kelley to settle with the second p lace finish and secon d overall. May said, " I was hoping I co uld .beat him without h is fall ing. Norris runs wild at Peaceful Cove ST By Mike Thuleen BOI SE, ID, AUG. 18 Troy Norris staved off Rod Reynolds' vicious challenges to command the O pen Experts at round 13 of Owyhee M.C.'s Summer Track Series. On ly two rounds remain and points are tight between the top five Open Experts. 0 ' N ea I/Ka l -Gard / K&N I Ke n Lenon/Honda of Caldwell / Wendil T&D Racing's Norris made th e mos t of his H on da 's power to catap ult him to the lead at the first turn. Rod Reyn o lds, R icky Henson, Todd Peu gh , . and J eff Russell jammed together, filling o u t the top slots. While Reynolds attempted to put th e p ush on Norris, R ussell managed to snake around Peugh to hound Henson. Near me halfway point, Henson mysteriously slowed and R ussell moved into third as th e Norrisl Reynolds battle raged ahead. Henson got going strong again, but not befor e Peugh charged by. He nson quickl y repassed Peu gh and th e two riders fought back-and-forth until Peugh 's chain derailed on the last lap. . Up front , Reynolds hammered on Norris 'in each turn and stra igh t but Norris mainta in ed h is coo l, taking me win with Reynolds breathing down his neck. R ussell co n tro lled third , with H enson a n d Peugh following. Two 250cc Experts stood out above the rest this evening. Western Power Sportsl AI's Sport Center/Motion P ro Cables-assis ted R u ssell and H enson im mediately p ulled away from the pack. Henson aggressively attacked R ussell as they raced the well-groomed track. At various stages of the race it seemed that either rider might have the win in the bag, but Russell held Henson at bay to capture the win. The Knobby class has been going strong recently, and, contrary to the expectations of many, th e track didn 't get bermed and whooped-up! Mounted on a CRI25 H onda, R ichie Reynolds immediately positioned himself at the hea d of the large field . Sco tt Knodell controlled second unti l Travis H owie pow ered by. Reyn o lds, u nder press ure fro m H o w ie, main tained his lead to command first at the finish, with Kn odell, Hans Kirschhner , Kip Smi th , and Willie Stone rounding o ut th e top five. Proctor pulls off Ocala MX win · By Athie Sanders OCALA, FL , AUG. 16 Robert Proctor claimed the overall in the Senior class duri ng round seven of the Gatorade/ Acerbis Plastic/Economy Cycle-sponsored FlorIda Motocross Club's Su mmer Series at Ocala Speedway. Proctor said, " It was jus t force of ha bit. The track went that way for the pas t year , then they changed it. I turned automatically. I ended up at the end of the pack in me first . rno to. Pa ul Shoddix too k over the lead in mo to one as Robert Godfrey and Kent Hotson followed. P ro ct o r picked riders off one-by-one until he was riding beh in d Hotson. Godfrey sailed ahead of Shoddix 10 take over th e lead , then Proctor mo ved up to stay on Godfrey's tai l and passed him com ing o ut of a turn near the en d of th e mo to, Proctor said, " I heard everyo ne cheering when I went by but I didn 't kn ow why. When I go t back to th e pits th ey tol d me I had won. I had no idea." Pr octor bl ew hi s lead again at th e start of moto two but this time came back in to th e ra ce in fifth place. H otson moved to th e front coming out of th e first turn as Todd Hunt, Shaddix and H en ry P rince followed. Proctor quickly mo ved up to ride ' beh ind the leader then mad e a move on him before the half way point. O nce ou t front he 'p u lled slightly away to cruise to the win. Domke NATALIA, TX, AUG 29 Ron Dunfee of Austin, Texas, swept both rnotos to win th e combined 1251 250cc event at the Texas State Supercross Championship Seri es sem ifin als at the Goodtimes Motorsports Park. With his H onda CR250 in the air almost as much as it was on the ground, Dunfee led a field of six Expert riders on the rain -dampened course. Dunfee was well prepared for the Goodtimes course after having th e opportunity to ride on th e track, that was designed by three-tim e Nation al Champion Kent Howerton, five days a week for practice. . The track, located 35 m iles sout h of San Antonio, was descri bed by Dun fee as "Excellent. I wish we had more of these." Second iii class was taken by Austin's Jack Beckham while Andy Bradsh aw finis hed third . Donnie Roland finished fourt h . In the 125cc Int ermediates, Jerry Gibson too k me win while Ronnie H oll o way was th e victor in the 125cc Open class. The 125cc Beginner class was won by Billy Mayes, who was foll owed home by Kawasaki -mounted J eff Stockbauer in th e I7-rider field.
