Charron with 13. CJ) ~--...,._------- State 3. Mail to : V _ City 500 riders showed up for the event, in which anyone with a CRC, NMA or SMX license can compete. When the gate fell for the first 250cc Pro class mota Hondamounted Paul Vlach was first into turn one. Running a heartbeat behind was Rick Gasper, Gary Semics, and Jim Chamberlain. Vlach wasted no time and opened up some breathing room on Sernics, now occupying se co n d . Moving up through the pack was " Roc ket" Rex Staten and after a seventh place start Staten had displaced Gasper and Darrin Hoeft and was now pushing Durbin for fourth. Staten went sideby-side with Durbin a s they approached th e double and when Durbin didn't jump them, he saw his position soar away with the highflying Staten. Up front Vlach continued to open up his lead, unaware of the battle for second. Chamberlain and Semics exchanged positions a few times while Staten closed the gap and was now riding Chamberlain's rear fender. The trio looked like a single blur as they shot through the esses and all three riders hit the doubles si de-by-side. Staten got in Sernic's shadow and attempted to pass. Vlach had been unaware of the dice behind him until Staten finally passed Semics , and closed to within three seconds of th e leader. Vlach continued to hold onto the lead with only t he double and one corner remaining before the checkered flag. Staten gave his YZ all he had and cleared the double with just enough speed to overtake Vlach and receive the checkered first. Running a strong third behind Vlach was Semics and in fourth Chamberlain held off Gasper. When th e gate fell in moto two it was Chamberlain out in front until Vlach sq ueezed by before the second corner. Staten and Semics were running third and fourth , determined not to let Vlach and Chamberlain run away with the race. On lap three Staten worked his way by Semics and at the end of lap four, passed Chamberlain. Staten set his sights on Vlach, who was only corners away, and waited until the last lap to make his move. Diving under Vlach only corners away from the finish Staten roc keted to the check ered £lag with a perfect I-I set of motos. Vlach had to settle for second overall with a pair of deuces and Semics captured third overall. 0.. __ THE MOREYOU KNOW THE BE I I ER ITGETS MOTORCVCl.E SAFETY FOUNDATION W For The Motorcycle RiderCourse Nearest 'lbu . .. call Toll Free: 800-447-4700 USA
