WESTWOOD, BC, CANADA, AUG. 15- 16 T wo days of intens e racing made more than a few cha nges to th e face of this year 's Canadian road race scen e. Before th e weekend began, Gary Goodfellow was th e rider favored to win big. He had just won th e round five Superbike National at Ca lagary the weekend before a nd h e was hot. Combined with hi s hom etrack adv antage, he was considered the rider to beat. That all changed on the start line of th e Superbike heat o n Saturday as Goodfellow's engine stalled as the starter's flag hit th e bottom of its arc. Wi th h is hand up, a dead engine and his pos ition o n th e front row, it was a d isaster. Goodfellow was hi t from behi nd by at least three other riders. The resulting ch ao s o f rid er s down, various bike parts, spilled fuel a nd oil, gawking sp ectators and working medics and marshals made it look like a war scene . Goodfellow and Lee Very were transported to th e hospital. Very was released later with bruises, scrapes and a headache. Goodfellow went into surgery; he had a ruptured spleen, n umerous broken ribs , a fractured tibia a nd severa l damaged vertabrae. Surgery went well and the nex t day he was tal king abou t keeping his commitments overseas b y the end of November. T he Pro Superbike fina l started with series leader Michel Mercier, w ith his Suzu ki Canada /Mike Cro mp ton-prep ared mach ine, only needing th ree more points to nai l down the nu mb er one pla te for an unprecedent ed secon d year . Mercier went from the pole position to lead th e firs t th ree lap s. At tha t point, both Steve Dick and Tom Wa lt her, on a -pair o f R o th m an s Hon da su pport bikes , slipped past. While Mercier did no t let anyone else by for the rest of the race , there was no q uestion that the battle was between Walther and Dick. It was on lap 12 tha t Wa lther go t past into first place and set a ne w lap record of I:08.2. Dick managed to retak e the lead five laps la ter righ t at the sta rt/finish . Then Wa lther g-ot him back coming through the hairpin with o n ly two lap s left. It was a photo finish with Walther's fro nt wheel crossing the lin e a mere six . inches in fro nt of Dick's; Results AM F·2 : 1. Geoff Davies (Han); 2..Todd Vaillan court (Yam ); 3.
