Davis dazzling at Castle Rock rr By Derryl Anderson CASTLE R O C K, WA , AUG . 15 R o n Wo ods/S h o eilCliff's Cycl e Center -sp onsored Darell Davis went I-I to n igh t to tak e home th e biggest share of the m oney in th e 250 and O p en Ju nior/ Expert classes o f th e IT held a t th e Castl e Rock Fairgrou nds. The Mt. St. H elen s M.C. cl ub did anothe r super job of getti ng the track ready as a lar ge number of riders signed in. In th e O pen" hea t race Davis took contro l a nd showed why h e's th e n u mber two Juni or in . th e n at io n. All of h is ea stern expe rience was ~rill i n g th e crowd to n o end . . . In th e main event a ll of th e ri ders were read y for a shot a t Dav is a n d th e money. At the start the i n side ri ders went left an d p u sh ed Davi s over th e bank. Davis ro de aro u n d on the in side waiti n g for a n ope n in g.b u t e ve ry r ider wen t b y before th e you ngster wa s able to reenter th e track, we ll behind th e p ack. Davi s immed iately started to p ick o ff rid ers. First Ro bert Frohs, G arth Mul key a nd th en co m in g ou t of turn four he blew by John Clayton. Lap af ter lap Da vis p us hed J im Servo and th en he flew by on th e ou tside and went gunning for R ya n Fish er. Two laps la ter Davis ca me over th e jump, pitched it side wa ys into the outside of tu rn th ree a n d wen t by Fi sher exiti ng turn four. Near th e en d o f th e race Davis mov ed up on Del Schni tzer. T he white flag ca me o u t as Davis used h is mi le expe rience to run it into tu rn one harder than Schnitzer a nd take co n tro l o f the lead wi th less th an a lap to go . All o f th e riders who were wa tching an d the cro wd wen t abso l u tely w ild as Davis wheeli ed past the chec kered flag. Beh in d h im in orde r was Sch n itzer, Fisher, Serv o, C la yton , Tay lo r, M u lkey and Frosh . o in th e second moto in orde r 10 save hi s energy for th e Open class. More th an 30 125cc B rider s were o n ha nd , so the Cresto n track crew ran qualifiers for a main event. Brian H ytrek won th e firs t qual ifier after a brief tu ssle w ith Kevin Well. T h e seco nd qualifier was led by La nc e Tucker, but J eff Di sh ma il stormed by Tucker to tak e the win. In the fin a l, Brian H ytrek dom inated th e entire eve nt wh ile J im H a ll ra n seco n d . Di shm all work ed up th rough th e pack to overtake H a ll o n lap th ree. At the fin ish, it was . H ytrek, Di shmall and H all taking th e top th ree spots. In th e Open 'class the showdown of th e season was being staged by Jay Kn app a nd Doug Nicholas. O n ly a h andfu l of p oints separated the two riders in this fi n a l event o f th e Neb raska-Iow a Cham p ionship MX Series. In th e first m ota it was Brad J o n es wi th th e h o lesh ot a nd Hy tr ek , Kna p p and Ni ch o la s in pursu it. H ytre k push ed J o n es · h a rd a n d bl asted by o n lap th ree in the stu tter bumps. Abou t th e sa me time Ni cholas tr ied to force h imself by Kn app , o n ly to crash a nd tak e hi s riv a l w ith him. Kn app recovered q u ick ly, whil e Ni ch o las lai d on th e gro u nd w ith a torn up kn ee. H ytrek wo n by a long shot, and J ones devel oped a fla t tire b u t sti ll m anaged to fini sh seco nd. Kn ap p sa lvaged thi rd with Da ryl Lilley riding hi s KTM in for fourth. In m ot o two, J ones go t th e hol eshot again with H ytrek in seco nd .
