Cahors cops Pro honors at Saylands MX By Mike Vancil FR EMONT, CA, AUG. 21 Brett Cahors made a rar e Baylands a ppea rance a nd wa lked off with top honors in the Open " All Comers" Professional class with a second in the first moto a nd a win in the second round . In moto one Gary R a be appeared his usual smooth self while Cahors had to figh t the course to sta y on Rabes' tail and to keep Gary Fargo at bay. In the second moto the front running rol es were reversed and Rabe found that Cahors had smoothed his riding and was impossible to' pass. Fargo captured ~wo third.s. In 125cc Intermed iate ac ti o n Jerome Smi th took th e overall win. Dave Rogers won th e first mot o and third we~t to Eric Feight. The second moto saw Sm ith push his Honda into a front ru nning position and run there for' the entire di stan ce. Rogers ca me close bu t cou ld not pa.ss Smi th. Feight was a non-start er 111 th e second moto. Rogers cha nge d hi s lu ck in th e 250cc Intermnedi ate class for he was a ble to rid e h is o ther H onda to a pair of wins over Serg io Fernandez, Ken Schroeder a nd Paul Midson. In each moto th ere was a brief side-by-side ba ttle for th e lead betw een Rogers and Fern andez, but Rogers won o u t by the th ird turn eac h tim e. Thompson led Newell for three laps in mot o one 'of the O pen P ro s; .rh en Ne we ll motored past and a way to an easy win. Newell, agai n, had 10 pass Thompso n ori lap two of th e s~co n d mo to, then p ulle d away . But hISrea r huh bro ke o n th e next -to-last lap a nd he was o ut. Thompson took the win a nd th e overa ll a hea d of Bob H an raha n. Newell had won 10 stra ig h t o utdoo r m oto s bef ore th e breakdown. Stacey Coo k was anothe r o ne wh o did no t ha ve the cus tomary success he has enjoyed thi s year. It took four la ps for Coo k to pass a hard cha rg ing . Gil Murray in moto one of th e 125cc Pro class . H e won a hea d of Tim Buch li a nd Mu rray. He was leading ro u nd two a head of Buch li and Murray wh en he cra shed on lap six. Although he remounted and finished second Buchli took th e win and the overall '. Mu rray had a n excel l~n t showing, fini shing third for third overa ll. At the start of the fir st 250cc Pro rnoto, Corey Cope, Derek Brown and Buchli all sq ueezed into tu rn one and something had to give. Brown was sandwic hed in the middle and went down. Kip Sandell rode over Brown's head and in to second behind Cope. Cope bai led later in th e lap, giv ing the lead 10 Sandell ahead of Cook and Buchli. Things stabilized until lap eigh t when Buchli took over second. Then Newell moved to third on la p nine. Sandell won a head of Buch li, Newell a nd Cook. Cook led Buchli, Cope and Sandell out of the gate in round two . Positions changed quickly ~or ~our laps, then settl ed with Cope 111 first ahead of Cook, Sandell and Buchli. Sandell tri ed to cut under Cook o n the next lap , and went down when he clipped Cook's rear tire, H e was back up and int o third bv lap eight, then Cope's gear box lo~ked up , This gave the lead and eventual win to Cook ahead of Sandell and Newel l.
