Pearson picks off Terre Haute Regional HM By Dave Hoenig Photos by Flat Trak Fotos TERRE HAUTE, IN, AUG. 23 Terre Haute Action Track was the site of an AMA Central Regional Championship Half Mile as professional racing returned to the Wabash Valley Fairgrounds. Unfortunately, a rough dry track greeted 77 riders on hand. Scott Pearson came from beh ind to beat Ted Boody in the Expert main, giving him two wins this year in the Central Region al Championshi p Series. Boody started off the day setting fastest time in the Expert class, while Dave Camlin was the quickest Junior. Twenty-nine Pro-Am riders were on hand. They were divided . into three heats with wins going to Charlie Southgate, Todd Bridges and Audie Huff. Kevin Atherton moved around early leader Craig Johnson to win the first Junior heat over Dave Camlin and Johnson. The second heat belonged to Bryan Villella over Mark Corsetti and Kris Kiser. Scott Adams took the lead in the first Expert heat with pole sitter Boody far back. Steve Champine pressured Adams as Boody worked his way to the front. Due to track conditions the heats were shorted to five laps and that is how long it took Boody to take the win. Adams held on to second but Champine dropped a position on the last lap and missed the main. Tim Mertens and Rick Gruber ran third and fourth. The second Expert heat was a runaway for Pearso n over Marty Bushman, Brian Atherton and Del Beck. Dave H ebb easily won heat three with Jeff J ones and Jon Champ lin dueling over second. Champlin came out on top. Brian McDowell passed Tom Colson and Dan McConnell on the last lap for the last transfer. The Pro-Am final was probably the best .ra ce of the day as five riders battled for the lead. Mike McDonnell was off the line first with Southgate, Huff, Bridges and Tim Best all in close formation. Southgate took the lead on lap three only to immediately drop back. Bridges then too k over but one lap later Huff was in command. Huff he ld hi s Grayboy/Gardner/ Mom & Dad -sponsored HarleyDavidson in front the last three laps ahead of a tight battle over second between Bridges and McDonnell. McDonnell passed on the last lap to take second. Best finished fourth over Gary Morel and Southgate. The Junior final was all but over after the first lap as Villella shot to the front for good on his Ron Wood! ShoeilTsubaki/Cam 2/Hog Wash/ Dad-sponsored Wood-Rotax. Atherton settled into second ahead of Corsetti. Erik Graybeal moved up to fourth ahead of Marc Gifford and Camlin. . Pearson took the lead into turn one of the Expert final only to bobble letting Champlin and Boody by. At the end of lap one Pearson was back in front. Boody held a sol id second over a tight battle between Tim Mertens, Brian Atherton and Champlin. By la p six Atherton held third over Mertens and Bryan McDowell. With two laps left Mertens fell in turn two and the race went on with Pearson getting both the checkered and red flag at the same time.
