The Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group-promoted stadium
motocross scheduled for January 30
in Anaheim (California) Stadium
will follow the traditional AMA
supercross format, not th e ultracross
format introduced this year at
MTEG events. "We intend to put on
th e same type of event that has always
been put on here," Thompson said
during an August 27 press conference
at the stadium. 'T h o m p so n has
applied for an AMA sanction for. the
race, which would make it part ofthe 1988 Supercross Series . but it is
unclear wh ether or not a sanction
will be issued. Bill Amick, AMA vice
president of professional competition, told Thompson in a recent
letter tha t the AMA will " reco mme n d " Thompson be granted a
sanctio n , but also said th e AMA,
" intends to honor o ur obliga tions
under the In sport Agreement. " The
In sportAgreement gives Mike Goodwin's Su percro ss In corporated (SXI)
the sole right to produce AMAsa n ctio n ed supercross racing in
so u th ern California. Thompson
recently was awarded an exclusive
contract by the city of Anaheim to
promote all motorsport events in
Anaheim Stadium.
Supercross Incorporated recently
filed a breach of contract suit in
Orange County Superior Court
against the Mickey Thompson
Entertainment Group, charging
MTEG with violating a non. competition ag reement between
the two promoters. SXl's Mike
Goodwin alleges Thompson violated an agreement which said
Goodwin would not promote offroad automobile races in southern
California if Thompson would not
promote motorcycle racing .
T hompson,
who
promoted
" Ult racross" stadium motocross
races during selected MTEG
events in 1987, counters t h at
Goodwin rendered the agreement
nu ll and void when he added offroad auto rac ing to t he AM A- .
sanctioned supercross program at
Anaheim Stadium in January of
1986.
