Blanchard continued to lead the race with Nenstiel still in close pursuit until the fourth lap when Bla nchard had to stop for gas. Nenstiel passed Blanchard in the pit to take the lead for that lap and part of the fifth lap. Blanchard pulled ou t all the stops to catch and pass Nenstiel on the fifth and fin al lap to fini sh with a 30-second lead. Fourth pl ace rid er Lennox had th e gas dilemma on lap four. During the whole race Lennox and Dunkelberger battled for third place. Lennox, seeing Dunkelberger stopping for gas , was even more determined to stay ahead and chose not to gas, with the hope of not having to p ush th e bik e to th e finish. Hi s decision paid off as he cane in to finish third, o ne minute a head of Dunkelberg er. Open Amateur AI. Buchhol z took hi s fourth win to ed ay at High Mountain. Buchholz took th e lead early with Em il Osif and Dennis Zurawski in close pursuit. Zurawski passed Osif on the first lap and maintained second place trymgio pu t pressure on Buchholz, but was unable to catc h him. Osif was onl y able to complete two lap s, putting Richard Moyer in third almost two minutes behind seco n d pl a ce Zuraw ski . William Sohosky, riding a 250 Husky , sa t on th e s ta r ti ng line moments after a ll th e o the r 250 Amateurs raced a ro und th e fir st turn. By 'the end of th e first lap, So ho sky was able to maneuver hi s Husky into fifth place inhot pursuit of th e early lead er, Yamaha rider Dennis Rinehimer. However, by th e end of th e third lap, Sohosky took th e fir st place position with Frank Levan onl y 20 seconds behind. ' Jim Hauptman put th e .Floo r Store Honda into the early lead and looked lik e he was going to open it up for a runaw ay win until Eri c Graybeal and the DC Cycle/Sprockett Spec.! Diamond Ch ain Rot ax sta rted to move up th rough traffi c. By the thi rd lap Gra ybeal had narrowed ' the ga p and reeled in H auptman. Hauptman kept Graybeal a t bay until th e first turn before th e white flag , wh en Graybeal ca me up on th e inside a nd pulled even a nd held hi s line to tak e the lead. Hauptman pr essed hard to rega in th e lead but Graybeal styled to th e win . . Matt Auxier mad e it a double win evening by besting Jimmy Songquist in the 50ccc final and th en ca me back to nip Steve Hall and hi s .DC Cycle / Prairi e Cycle Honda for th e 80cc honors. Scot Huff wound up his Greyb o y/G ardener Yam ah a a nd styled his wa y to th e l25cc cla ss top spot , holding off Indiana State Ch ampion Phil Palmer and Brian Graybeal after taking th e .lead from Palmer on the second lap. The 200cc class was a barn burner pi tting J eff Chisham and D-17 point lead er , o n the Odin Racin g T eam Suzuki , Matt Collier. Chisham grabbed th e ea rly lead but co uld n' t keep Collier behind him. Coll ier took the lead and pulled a way to tak e .th e win, while Chisham held off the ha rd cha rgi ng David Bui s for second. It took two full heats to sort o ut th e 250s a nd whe n they were co mbined for th e final the lead went to J.J. McDowell. McDow ell and Jay Arn old slowly pulled a way from the field in the ea rly laps. Arnold kept it close but thi s night belonged to McD owell. Phil Palm er got by Sha wn Wade in th e lat e laps and held him off for third. Mark Augustine powered hi s Bultaco to the 400cc class win over Steve Sh ank in th e Senior cla ss final. Jim Kidman survived th e battle on the track and th e war of a tt ritio n to take the win over Greg Calley and Jeff Chish am. Ch arging away with the holeshot was Greg Fontain , a nd he held th e lead easily as he came into ch ange rid ers with time to spare. Fontain's teammat e Leonard Kilman th en piloted hi s Yam aha back out onto the tra ck, but was soo n 'caught and passed through th e chicane by Ken Ra tzloff. Soo n after Ken Raul off handed his bik e to Ro ry Muscatel] who th en surrendered the lead back to Fontain, The race cont in ued with th e lead cha nging every lap, showing that both teams had a n eq ua l cha nce of winning.
