Most of the details for American
Hond a's professional racing program in 1988 "haven't been
decided yet, " according to Honda 's Gary Mathers, but a few
t hings are certain. Honda will field
two superb ike r iders during
AMA /Came l Pro Series road
races, the Japanese company will
back two factory MX riders in the
U.S., and Honda will drop out of
dirt track racing : . We have con"
tracts w ith (Wayne) Rai ney and
(Bubba) Shobert for next year, so
we'll run superbike w ith t hose
guys, " said Mathers. " We'll have
two MX riders: one w ill be Ricky
Johnson and the other hasn't
bee n decided. And t he re will be
no dirt track program because of
the rest rict or rule and an impending claiming r ul e. There w ill probably be an engine claiming rule
next yea r and we wou ld become
t he supplier for everybody's '
eng ines. Also, most of our AMA
contingency programs will go
away next year."
