JULY 31 P h il Collins posted his first Scratch main win at Costa Mesa tonight aft er mech ani cal problems sidelined Steve Lu cero, who loo ked to be o n his way to his first main even t win of the year. Goi ng into the main , Lu cero had pos ted wins in bo th h is hea t a nd semi . Co lli ns, for the seco nd time during the week , drew the po le for th e main. Lucero was o ut of two a nd he ga ted a head of Co llins a nd former Na tiona l Cha m p ions Alan Ch rist ian and Bobby Sch wartz. Schwartz go t as far as turn four o n th e o peni ng lap before pulling up a nd headin g for the infi eld . By that tim e, Lucero , the 1985 Ca li fornia Sta te Cham pi on , had esta blished a lead and it loo ked li ke he was rea dy to claim h is first checkered flag of th e season. The leader blasted into tu rn one on the second la p wit h a comfortab le lead, when sudden ly th e sou nd of slapp in g meda l co uld be heard. L ucero had broken a primary cha in a nd he coas ted silently to the cra sh wall whi le Collins, on the No rco Mits ubishi/ JT Racing USAISTP/Cirello Racing/Ro vazzin i Electric Weslake, -breezed by wi th Christia n in a fig ht fo r t he poi nt posi tio n . Brant sai led th rough the air while Ferre ll went down a nd that broug ht o ut a red flag. T he race was resta rted a nd everybody made the restart. Kossuth, off the 20, grabbed th e po int positi on wit h Ed Cas tro a nd th en Rob Pletzing mannin g th e number two spot on la p th ree, while Ferr ell caugh t Pfetzin g a nd th ey went at it side- byside until la p five whe n Ferrell forcefully moved Pfetzin g o ut of hi s way a nd too k second in tu rn one. Ferre ll had a long way to go to ca tch Kossuth , but he co u ld n' t even dent the lead and Kossut h won by a half straight over Ferrell, Pfetzin g and Shawn McConnell. The " Fl yin g Chicano" Tony Gomez (P D J a wa) defeated Archie Perez 10 wi n the wi ld Support clas s mai n event. The rider kn own as "Showti me" had wo n three of h is four previo us o utings a t the lightning fast dirt ova l a nd had to be considered th e favori te as the riders lined up for th e sta rt of the big money four lapper. England's Phil Colli ns pu lled his Weslake u p to the po le position for the start with Ott out of two , Schwartz in three and British League bound Rob Pfetzing out of four. T he Englis h lad ga ted all three of th e " Yanks" in the field a nd he set the pa ce into the first bend . Co ll ins ' lead was short lived as Schwartz too k the lead away wh en he swu ng wid e off turn two a nd wi th seemi ng ly no roo m at a ll, sn uck between Co llins a nd the cras hwall. T hat was th e on ly serious threat that Brown had a nd by the half way point he wa s building a lead. H am ill reclaimed second from Castro on th e , fifth circui t but th ere was no wa y that he was go ing to catch Brown. The battle ended up being for th e second pl ace positi on as 17-yea r-old H amill had to du el with veterans Cas tro, Larsen , Pfetzin g and Lucero for the n umber two spot. Todd Stavens was the third a nd last rid er with I I , ano ther 30 seconds beh ind Vanasse, and he took firs t in th e A Lightweigh t class. The first rid er with a 12 was Larry Pu grab, winner of th e Heavyweigh t d ivision, T he course was lai d o ut in a nd around th e hills of Durham , a nd dry wea ther as well as th e ge nerosi ty of Trail Boss Craig Baker (he's a " C" rider) produced a course tha t was a far cry from th e typical New England fare. The co urse was al most entirely roc k-free, except for a few boneyar ds in th e special test sectio ns. Many woods sectio ns develo ped huge, soft, loam y berm s in the turns, a nd if a n unwary rider drove too far int o th em he'd fin d h im self off into the trees afte r he broke th rough th e o ther side.
