CA, AUG. 6 If it is T h ursday eveni ng in so ut he rn California, it is time ' for a no the r Bobb y Schwartz win a t Chris Agajanian 's Ascot South Bay Stadium. This Thursday even ing the defending National Champion laid claim to his 14th Scratch main win in 17 1987 South Bay Stadium outings. Sch wartz had to con tend wi th Alan " Crazy" Christian on the night. Christian has had a tough season but on Thursday, he displayed the form that took him to th e 1985 U.S . National Championship and he.was more than ready to lock horns with the 1986 Champion. Schwartz looked to be in trouble for the start of the main as he drew . gate four. That put him outside of "Rad" Brad Oxley, Christian and Tuff McBride, who made his first ever South Bay Stadium Scratch main. Christian gated th e field and led into turn one but Oxley and Schwartz were snapping at his rear tire. Schwartz, like he did at IMS the previous week, took the Budweiser/ Silkolene/C.T .I. Brace/Malcolm Smith/Oakley Weslake to the outside and with a daring move, he shot between Christian and th e wall and too k over the lead. The battle now switched to the second place as Ox ley tried to power past Christian. The tall b londe moved to the inside on lap two but Christia n proved too hard to move off the po le. At the front of the pack, Schwartz was cruising and rightfully so af ter the ni ce move he used to ta ke the lead o n th e first revolution. The checkered ca me down a nd he had bagged anoth er win by a wide margin over Christian, Oxley and McBride. "Fast " Eddie Castro, STP/Maurice's Used Speedway Bik es/Matt 's Machine/ Arai Wesl ak e-sponsored, won all three of hi s Handicap races including th e eig h t lap main event. There were five rid ers in th e main who were 30-yard-line rid ers, That was too cro wded for officials so th ey held a d raw a nd the loser would have to move back 10 yards. Doug Nicol, who ch a nged his leath er s a fte r winning hi s sem i, proved to be th e unlucky man and he had an ex tra 10 yards tacked on. The field rocketed away wh en th e tapes wentup and Castro shot to the front ahead of Keith Larsen and Bill y H am ill. Larsen tried to go around Castro as they came off turn two the first time bu t Cas tro blocked h im . T hat left th e ins ide open and Hami ll tried to take that ro ute to get into the lead. It was a fender-to-fender battle until Hamill wheelied near the end of the first circuit and that p ut " Fast " Eddie into the lead for keeps . Even though Castro never trailed again, he still had to work very hard. Former World Finalist Phil Co llins Bobby Schwartz won his 14t h Scratch main at Ascot. took over th e seco nd spot o n lap three a nd he ga ve Castro all he cou ld handle. Collins tried the inside at the halfway point and it didn't work. He then tried to go around the whi te leathered Castro but he still co uld n 't shoot by. Collins went to the extreme outside at th e start of lap five and couldn't find the drive. At th e end of the lap, he swung low and a tough riding Castro wa s still there. Castro opened up a small lead on the final lap and he took a well deserved win. Hard riding Collins took second with Hamill third. Resu lts SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Schwanz (Wes~ 2. Alan Christian (Was); 3. With his bod y close to his bike in the familar style th at he has used at the venerable track since 19 70, h e closed on McBride on the final lap. He caught McBride on the final bend and banged his wa y alongside as th ey came out of four and just before th e ch eckered came out, he edged by for th e lead.
