Mihal edges Boehm in Willow Springs By Terry Whytal 42 ROSAMOND, CA, AUG. 9 Jim Mihal from Escondido, jetted his Yamaha YSR50 to the 181-250 (pou n d) Advanced class win at this week 's YSR50 Track Challenge event at Willow Springs. Mihal's duel with Mitch Boehm in both heats provided the da y's top action as Boehm reached th e ch eckered flag first in round one despite intens e pressure from Mihal. In th e seco n d heat th e positions were reversed with Mihal gra bbi ng th e hol esh ot a head o f Boehm a nd th e eig h t-rider field. Boehm tried every lin e o n the co urse to pass Mihal , tryi ng so ha rd th at he nearl y threw th e bi ke a wa y o n at lea st th ree occa sio ns. Mihal's 2-1 sco re gave hi m the overa ll win with Boehm laking second a hea d of J oel Randel. In the 141-180 Adva nced class race Will Sorensen pos ted a 1-2 score to top Mark Peterson for th e overa ll wi n. Lucero finds Speedway USA win By Scott Da loisio VICTO R VIL LE, CA, AUG. 8 Steve Lu cero happens to be o ne of the most co nsistent rid ers on th e sou th ern Ca lifornia speedway circu it. Therefore, it is hard to bel ieve, th at comi ng into Sa turday, he hadn 't wo n a main event a ll seaso n long. T ha t a ll cha nged Saturday wh en Lucero en ded up th e co ntroversia l victor in th e Scra tch ma in event at Spe edway USA. Lu cero a lmos t had a win a t COSLa Mesa nine da ys earl ier but he was hit with bad lu ck wh en hi s chain broke while leading. On Saturday, things cha nged for the 1985 California State Champion. He was battling with Bobby Schwartz for the point position wh en he went down. Ou t came the red flag and Schwartz was disqualifi ed by referee Den n i s c DeTemple. Schwartz wa s off th e pole in the ' main a nd he took the lead on the ' fir st attempt 10 run th e event but the. red was ou t before the field got through turn one. Lucero went a little wid e and forced Scotty Brown wide. Wh en Brown went wide, i t~ for ced Louis Kossuth into th e wall and down. The entire field restarted th e event a nd th e defending National Cham pion again gated the pa ck. Schwartz held th e lead until Lucero, on the Shoei/STP/ O ilza ll/Scort/Megacy- > c1e Cams/Kal-Gard/Cirello Godden,q ducked to th e in sid e and took the lead'; in turn three on lap one.
