Riders from across th e country and Canada came to South Dakota for a weekend o f racing, but an a llda y ra in on Fr iday canceled th e h illclimb a n d left the Jackpine G yp sies M.e. short track a muddy ' mess. Hard work on Saturday, whil e a Pro-Am rac e was being held at th e fairgrounds half mile track, had th e sho rt track in record setting condit io n that n ight. Chad Felici o p owered his ERC Racing Fuell Shoe ilHi-Point/TsubakiiTorco/ Kal -Gard/Sudco -sponsored Honda to a 13.367 record lap tim e in time tri als. Pro-Am heats went to Scott Chappell, Rex Fisher, Mik e McDonnell and Mike Patterson. Bobby McDowell backed up hi s fast Junior time by winnin g the first Junior heat. O th er Ju n io r heat wi n ne rs were' Darrell Da vis, Rod Reyn olds and Mike Gres ham. The first Expert hea t saw Felicio m uscle his way past T im Stults for th e win. Mickey Fay led the second heat un til th e ha lfwa y mark when he fell spectacularly at the startfin ish line. Mike Reid too k over until th e last la p w he n Chris Eva ns slipped by for the wi n. Dave Durelle led Scott Ada ms home in heat three, and Kirk Stro ng ra n away wi th th e last heat ahead of pol e sitter Bill y Taylor. . Mi ke McDonnell took the lead o f the first Pro-Am semi from Stu rgis' own Matt Burge at the halfwa y point and th ey ra n o ne -two to th e finish . T he second sem i belonged to Pater so n with Fish er holding seco nd until th e next to last lap wh en Clint Vansholtz took over. McDow ell sho t into th e lead of the first Junior sem i only to have hi s H onda quit on lap four. Rod Reynolds took over for th e win over Otto J orgenson and Kit Farley. The seco nd sem i was won easily by Davi s o ver Gresh am a nd Kris Kiser. Feli cio co nt in ued to dominate th e Ex pert class, leading th e first Ex pert sem i wire-to -wire. Roose held second until he dropped ou t on lap six. Adams moved into second ah ead of Dave Durelle and Tim Stultz. Can- . adia ns Chris Evans and Royal Adderso n ra n o ne-two in the seco nd sem i a hea d o f Dan McDonnell a nd Kirk Stro ng, Patterson too k the lead of the ProAm fin al on ly to gi ve way to Mike McDonnell with Fish er and Bu rge close behind. The race was red n agged on lap six wh en Burge and Vonsholtz fell in turn tw o. The restart saw McDonnell pick up whe re he lef t off , cruising in front of Patterson, Fish er a nd T im Lorge. Suddenly McDonnell was down in turn two and Patterson seemed to be in con trol until th e last lap, last turn wh en Fish er push ed hi s Dave Bird! Fresh from sweeping all three Pro classes at the Pro-Am half mile, Davis led the Junior final into turn one ahead of Reynolds, Gresham and Kis er. Davis kept his Tsubakil Shoei / R o n Wood /Hog Wash / Cam2/MC Rac ing-sponsored WoodRotax solidly in front while th e positions behind were set until Gresh am starte d dropping back and finall y out on the next to last lap. Reynolds held on for second a head o f Kiser a nd Ch ance Darl in g. Feli cio charged to the fro nt o f th e Expert fina l as Durelle's ride en ded with a fall in tu rn one. Feli cio led Ada ms, Evan s and Stults, a nd althoug h the racin g was close no position cha nged hands. Beautiful su n ny skies greeted the 88 riders who signed u p for Su nday's Reg ional Ch am pionsh ip half m ile a t the Stu rgis Ci ty Fa irgroun ds. Strong took his H arley to fast Expert time at 26.234 ah ead of Durell e's 26.480. Jun ior rider s ha d Scratch heats in stead of ti me tria ls with Davi s win ni ng th e fastest hea t. Pro-Am hea ts fell to Mike McDonnell , Fish er, Mik e Guinn and Speedy Kell. Davi s ra n a way with the first Junior heat over Kiser, a nd Dave Ca m lin led Eri c Satterwaite home in heat two. Then Mark G ifford took a race-long battle from Randy Feldhaus, and McDowell easily won th e last heat over Gresham. Fast qualifier Strong jumped' into the lead of the fir st Expert heat on ly to be sidelined on lap three. Randy Triplett took o ver a nd led A.J. Eshwi&to th e fin ish . Durelle cruised home in front of Fay in heat two, and Sal H offman easily won heat three over. Adams. T he 'Iast Expert heat went to Feli cio o ver Gi esick. Fish er far out-di stanced Kell and Lorge in th e first Pro-Am semi. Dave Durelle took the Expert half mile event at Sturgis. Vansholtz moved by early leader Mike Guinn to tak e th e seco nd sem i. Mike McDonnell a lso passed Van sho !tz for second. . Davis co ntin ued hi s winning ways in th e first Junior sem i. Darling slipped by Ca m lin for seco nd wh il e H assey moved up from deep in th e field to take fourth. McDow ell passed Mark Gifford on lap th ree for the second semi win with Feldhaus a nd G r esham third a n d fourth , respectively. Durelle eas ily ra n away with the first Expert heat but a fierce battle over seco nd went down to th e wire with second going to T riplett over Fay a nd Kelly Larkin . Feli cio led the second sem i fro m start to finish over Evans and Gi esick. Fish er grabbed th e holeshot in the Pro-Am final only to have Vansholtz take over on lap two. Meanwhile, Mike McDonnell was closing and forced his Lillie Racing/ Arai/L&M L eather/Fred's Speed & Sport/ Jimmy . Odom /EZI Car Caresponsored Harley into the lead just past the halfway mark. Fisher passed Van sholtz for second, and Vansholtz wa s third over Tim Peterson and Mike Patterson. The Junior fina l had to be rednagged whe n a three rider pile-up clogged turn o ne. Gi fford, Carnlin a nd Hassay a ll fell and H assa y had to tak e a ri de to the ho spital. The fina l restarted wi th I I riders. McDowell- led th e first half o f the race but Davis assume d his usual posi tion in fro nt on lap six a nd went o n to win. McDowell settled into seco nd ove r G resha m, a nd some di stance back Kiser led Darl in g home in fourth. Du rell e had to get th e hol esh o t twice as Evans fell in .turn o ne on the first start o f th e Ex pert main. Durell e timed the restart pe rfec tly a nd h ad his Wins ton Racer s/AI Muth H-D/Bell /Gen eral En g.lGRiffco-sponsored Wood-Rotax well in front by lap two. Larkin held do wn second over Felicio un til lap fou r wh en Fel icio took over second. But Felicio cou ld not gain on Durelle a nd by lap six Todd Giesick had moved his BSA up to cha llenge Felicio for se~nd. Gi esick had the crowd going wild as he pressured Felicio but in the end it was Durelle, Feli cio and Gi esick. For two laps Johnny Dauth tra il ed Cra ig Porter until Dauth got by on the sta rt o f lap three. T he three fron t runners contin ued in that order to the finish. In th e second moto Porter got the hol esh ot a nd led for nearly three laps before Rabe figured a way a ro u nd. Porter go t into a deep, 1800 berm approaching th e tabletop jump, and it was here that Rabe setu p his pass after th e tabletop. Gary Fargo came' from fourth on lap one to dispatch I Dauth and then set his sights on ' Porter. Fargo powered around Porter . on the right-hander prior to the! fin ish a nd went all th e way to the checkers holding onto second place' In th e final tally it was Porters'. 3- l 3 that got him second pl ace money, while Dauths' 2-4 was good for third' overall. Duane Hughes put together two ma sterful ride s to tak e th e overall in th e Vet Master class. Hughes grabbed th e lead o ff th e gri d in eac h moto and was never ser io us ly cha llenged as bo th victories were by fairly wide marg in s. In the first mot o the nearest competitor was J erry Caton, sponsored by Coas t H onda. Caton did poorly in th e seco nd running and Mike La ne kept Hughes in sig h t. At the chec kers it was La ne co ming on when H ugh es eit her faded or played it carefu l. Hughes was th e overall winner a nd Lanes' 4-2 was good for seco nd place.
