Tha t p laced Hart into the winner 's circle via 3-1 performances. Second went to Scott Steffy with 2-2 ri des a nd Brian T hompson was th ird af ter a 5-2 sh owing. Ken11Y Olsen a nd Gary Beyer ro u nded o u t the top five. Steffy swept both mot os of th e 250cc class, bu t o n ly after shaking o ff Kawa saki rider Dennis Swee ten. Tom Cerciello quickly too k command from Mik e Varnes, Cru ml in g a nd Gingrich . On.the next lap, G ingrich got by Cru m lmg for th ird , a n d spent the nex t three laps tryin g to ge t arou nd the su rp ris ingly q u ick Varnes. After ge tting by Varnes, G ing rich set h is sig h ts o n Cerciell o . Ging rich dov e under Cerciell o as th ey entered th e th ird turn o n th e final lap a nd h eld on to win by a few in ches. In the first Pro class moto Tony McG rath banzaied his Honda into th e lead whi le Wooten wrestled his way into the seco nd sp o t. McG ra th wa s intent on wi nning a n d set a fa st p ace wi th Wooten chasi ng. It look ed as th ough McGra th migh t ta ke the victory but o n the last lap , with pressu re fro m Woot en mounting, h e went do wn and Wooten slipped by fo r the win. The heat race gave indicatio n th a t Pau ley had a surprise for everyo ne as he struggled to come in fo urth p lace, barel y bea ti ng Evan H o wa rd a t the line. But at th e green ligh t of th e 12-lap fina l it was H o n da mounted G reg Sow le, who h a d already won the fina l for 125cc cla ss ri ders , out in the lead wit h Paul ey ho t o n h is hee ls. Paul ey p ushed what appeared to be a n ol d El sinore H o nda under Sowles' new C R mo to cro ss based machine and took over the lead o n lap three.
