Gammon 54 behind Spear each time, but the relatively new expert fell prey to both Habacker and Mann 's experience. Habacker held off Mann for second in both motos with just a wheel length separating them in the second moto. Spear is in total control of the points chase with 320 points to Ken Napolitano's 215. Napolitano had a 7-5 this da y. The 125cc Novice class, despite qualifying rnotos, really mixed up the results in th e second rnoto, Jason Linn's 2-3 was good eno ugh for first overall while J am es Mangariello's 4· 6 took second. Both first moto winners in th is class. Chris Brindis and Bill Minard. ran into trouble. WYTHEVILLE. VA, JULY 19 Yamaha support rider Mike Jones rolled into Wythe Raceway. showed his stuff and went home with the cash , as he dominated the 125 and 250cc Pro classes. Mike Brown was the top gun in the Amateur division. as he rod e Barr's Competition Hondas to two class wins. . Robbie Taylor and Mike Bias led the pack in the 125cc Pro qualifier with Jones having to work his way through the pack. At the finish it was Taylor taking the win and Jones bumping Bias back to the third spot. In the main, Jones holeshot and . sped away from the pack. Mark Spriggle gated second and maintained the position until the halfway mark wh en Taylor came charging up through the pack. Taylor was closing but ran out of time and had to settle for second. Jones led Taylor through the first turn in the 250cc Pro qualifier but on lap three. Taylor took the lead and held it to the wi n. In the main, Jones put his Yamaha into the lead .at the start and rode a great race for the win. Taylor gated second and. kept the pressure on throughout the race but Jones made no mistakes. Brown started his domination of the Amateur classes by winning the 125cc C qualifier and main events over Shane Templeton. Scharphorn tops Bear Creek Enduro By Bob Bergmann LEOTA, MI, J ULY 19 R ick Scharphorn dropped fiv e points on his KTM 350 to eas ily tak e the overall honors at th e second annual Bear Creek Enduro, put on by th e Millingston Bulldog Rid ers-, The event was held in th e Pere Marquette State Forest with a variety of single and two track trail s plus some hills and even mud. The race was put in jeopardy th e day before when a careless weekend warrior ran off the road and stalled his car. While trying to restart his car. it backfired and sta rt ed the woods on fire. A motorcyclist summoned the fire department and even grabbed rak es and sho vels to help put the fire out. In all , on ly a ' co up le miles of trail were burned, and th e co urse was shortened. The 85 ac tu al miles of trail were mo stl y dry and dusty. but water awaited th e riders at mo st of the checks and resets. . Brian Lohman was top expert by dropping nine points on hi s Husky. . Craig Pi ckett took A High Point honors by dropping 10 points on his KX250. High Point B rider Wes Near put in a fantastic ride by dropping only 17 points on hi s Husk y. Tompkins, Nilvoshelski tops at Ace Motocross By John Spear MODENA, NY, JULY 12 Dennis Tompkins and J ason Navoshelski each won their qualifying mota in the 125cc Amateur class at th e Ace MX 'and then battled the' entire second moto before Tompkins held the lead at the end of take the overall. . Waiting in the wings th e entire moto for a mistake by either of the leaders was Dennis' brother Herb. But the mistake never came so Herb settl ed for third, his 3-3 score gave him third overall ahead of John Wienberg's 2-5 for fourth. . All three Expert classes provided tight racing with Carlo Coen winning both the 125 and 250cc Expert class es. In the 125s, Coen pulled out an early lead and let Rob McCullough (2-2), John Ryan (4-3), Todd Dippel (5-4) and Ed Foedish (3-5) swa p places behind him all afternoon. Dippel still holds the lead for the number one plate with 292 points while Ryan has 255 and Foedish 230. Coen won the 250cc Expert class . but it was tough. In the first rnoto, Mike Spear chased him until the last lap before letting him get away. In the second moto, J ohn Ryan held the lead for the first five laps with Coen and Spear on his tail. Coen got by on lap six to take the overall. Ryan held on for second when Spear was taken out by a lapped rider who had fallen on the blind-side of the new lyconstructeduunnel jump. Spear remounted for third as the top three had nearly a 40-second lead on the next group. Spear easily won both Open Expert motos but that didn't affect the battle behind him, Jim Habacker, Keith Mann and Kyle Ellefsen who had a four-rider freighttrain both motos. CA, JULY 18 Suzuki Country rider Jeff Stanford powered his 250cc RM to a convincmg win in th e Pro class at the SMX MX at Perris. Stanford had his hands full holding off fellow SCR pilot Tony Spear and Kawasaki-mounted Ed Arnet, Arnet pulled to the early lead in round one with Stanford trailing in the number two position. Nearing the halfway point Arnet seemed to tir e and Stanford moved into th e lead. At the checkers it was Stanford, Arnet and Spear claiming the top three positions. Moto two was a near replay but this time Stanford moved to the lead sooner and danced to the win. Arnet was second overall with Spear third. Ulf Johansson was flawless in the 250cc Intermediate class. Johansson put his Honda in front early in each moto and was never headed. Hondamounted Ri ck Grant picked up second overall ahead of Richard Calsidillas on another Honda. In the Vet Expert division Pete Vetrano benefited from hard riding and some bad luck on the part of his competitors. Vetrano powered his Yamaha to the lead over Keith Ehlers and Art Olivier. Olivier 'DNF • due to mechanical problems and Ehlers took an off-track excursion. handing Vetrano an easy win. Olivier was back in round two and reached the checkers first as Ehlers and . Vetrano argued over second. Vetrano held off the hard pressing Eh lers to post a 1-2 score and clinch the overall win. Ehlers took second for the day with Olivier's 6-3 good enough for third.
