Co SPRING GROVE, IL, JULY 19 Over 400 riders crowded the Maplehurst Cycle Park facility to compe te for their share of th e $30,000 purse in ro und six of the Midwest Motocross Committee Su per Serie s. Rich H al stead went home wit h the first place honors in th e 125cc Expert ra nks . . One of the closes t season lo ng battles opened another cha p ter in its .saga, as the 250cc Experts took their places on the starting gate. With bot h Halstead and j im Veugeler n urs ing naggin g injuries, th e day was up for grabs. As the class gates, Veugeler grabbed a q u ick lead followed by Mike Ro th , Bob Behrens and Cory Schw eit zer. Ha lstea d got away poorly and a first turn mishap pu t him back in the pack. . As H al stead charged, Veugeler pulled away from th e battle for second. Schweitzer m oved past bo th Roth and Beh rens early to pursue Veugel er. La p by la p , Halstead p icked away at the pack, while Veugeler and Schweitzer settled into a comforta ble rhy thm up front and Roth and Beh rens diced for thi rd. As H al stead closed, Roth turned up th e wick a nd left Beh ren s to ba ttl e H al stead. At the fin ish , Veugeler and Schw eitzer took the first two spots, Roth th ird and Behrens held o n to fou rth over H al stead. . T he drama increased for moto two as fi rst m o to w inner, Ve ugeler elected to sit out after a big get off in the first 125cc Expert rnoto. Agai n, H al stead gated poorly and found himself in pursuit of the ear ly leaders Schweitzer, Behrens, Ro th an d jackso n . Schwei tzer and Beh ren s 'exchanged the lead while jackson press ured from th ird. Ro th settled into fourt h. Halstead q ui ckl y moved past Roth and j ackson and then Schweitzer to pressure th e lead er Beh ren s. By the white £lag lap , Halstead was all"over Behren s and swept wide on a sli ppery off camb er to move into the lead, bu tonly temporarily. At the end of the next straight, H al stead wen t hig h on a powder berm that didn 't hold and Behrens went down low to regai n the lead. H alstead fell a nd was u nable to restart un til after Schwei tzer regained second. Halstead held on to finish th ird , Roth fourth a nd R u st y O tt fi ft h . Schweitzer's consistent rides earned him the overall. The exciteme nt cont inued in the 125cc Expert class. After holding a near mota long lead in th e first m o to, Veugeler succumbed to th e 95 degree temperatures and cras hed over a set of lo ng doubles, surrendering the lead to Halstead. At the checkered flag, Halstead cruised to a victory wi th Roth o u t .ba u ling Sch weit zer for second. Schwei tzer charged o u t of the gate at the start of the second moto followed by Halstead, Roth and Chris Brasi le. H al stead moved pas t Schweitzer early, while Brasile challenged Ro th for third. Pennington tops Pros at 8aylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, JULY 31· Greg Pen n ingto n cap tured firs t p lace in the 250cc P ro cla ss tonigh t at Baylands Raceway. In the first mo to Gary Rabe was a tem porary threat , but by th e th ird corner Pen n in gton was able to have his own way. R abe followed in an uncontested second positio n but he co uld draw no near er to Pen n in gt on than a bou t 10 bik e len gth s. Craig Porter trai led in th ird for the whole mo to, follo wed by Randy Den ton. The secon d mot o saw Porter get the start, bu t Penn ington and Rab e wor ked by quickl y and th e finish order, as in the first moto, was again establi shed. The Veteran Master class was won by Du an e Hugh es. In the first mota he was first off the line and never looked back. Larry Baker and Phil Rice battled for second, while j erry Caton battled with Mik e H ernandez over' fourth. Cat on and H ernandez moved past Ri ce and at th e checke rs it was H ern andez beating Ca ton by just a few feet. T he fin ish order was Hughes, Baker, Hernandez. Caton and Rice. Hughes was again th e ear ly leader in moto two, follow ed by j erry Cas tillo. T hree laps into the mo to Rice began a drive th at carried him pas t Castill o and Cat on but not far eno ugh to mo unt a c ha lle nge to H ughes.
