Freem an led from wire to wire , w hile T ommy Cowan and Kenneth Barr di ced co rner for corner, straigh t for s tra ig h t, l ap a fter lap to r seco n d, w i th Cowan co p pi ng runner-up by a whisker. Until a snap ped chai n nearly put him into th e wall , you n g Chuck Blackm on , on hi s 250cc tracker, was thrilling th e cro wd as he kept pace with th e large-bore bikes. The Co lor Tone/Mike Kidd's Yamaha/Shoei H elmets bike pi loted by jack Surber ke p t in touch with the leaders w hile the Atlas Honda Funkhammer Raci ng mach ine rid den by George Galloway and Typographies' Loren Williams d uked it o ut for last. The co mbined 125/250cc Amate urs put o n a very good race. Strick's Cycle Shop's Paul Firnschild put his 125cc Suzuki in front of the pack at the o~tset and was chased by Blackmon 's 125cc Cagiva, Chuck Linkous's 250cc Yamaha, Allen Garnes on his YZI25 and the 125 YZ of Chris Tucker. All eyes were on Tucker. He moved from fifth to third on the second lap, into seco n d on th e third lap , took first on -th e fourth goaround, th en he wa s gone. Eddie Johnson holeshot the 250cc Novice ra ce and held th e lead the whole way . He was dogged by Craig Ashworth 's Anderson Cycle Sal essponsored YZ. Lam ar Haney's Honda was nipping at their heels for a good while, until he stuffed it and Curtis Urps of Simpsonvill took over the spot. Whi le most class es were ab le to roar through th e first turn wi thout riders biting th e dust, the Senior Mi nis weren't so l u ck y. Dav id " Sq u ig g s" D icker so n and Steve Burdett e ta ngled, p utting " Sq u iggs" o ut of the race and Burdette a lap down . " Rockin " Ronn ie Yarbro got a n unus ually rotten start, a nd m ore bad lu ck put h im into a bum p-u p wi th Nicole Caldwell o n the . front s tra ight, further delaying their progress. Chad Leigh 's Barr's Competition YZ was uncatchable, even for Da vid Cantrell's quick little Honda . and J a m ie Hack ing's EP Performs/ Neeley Ra cing KX. " Hackett" overcame his fifth -p lace start by picking off Br ia n Thomas and Da n n y " Goose" Gravely. He chased down Cantrell but Leigh wouldn 't let him past and he had to be satisfied with seco nd. "Tricky" Trever Levitt got the ju mp on everyo ne in the 125cc Novice rac e, holding his lead until m idrace when Gary Dalton of Highlands, North Carolina , took it and would n ' t giv e it back. Chris Steene's Ca gi va and Rob Bell's Honda barked at his heels, and Rex Barnes, w ho u su a ll y does we ll in this class , co u ldn ' t overcome his unaccusto m ed terrible start and finish ed in th e m iddle of th e pack. R H ~ I~ . ~ .t4 8 Pegram doubles at Dirt Track Nationals By Bill Holt SYCAMO RE, IL, JU LY 17 Larry Pegra m of Baltimore, Ohio, collected two Nati ona l ti tles foll ow ing the fin al ro u nd of th e AMA Am ateur G rand Na tio na l Champi onship Dirt T rac k Ser ies, held in Sycamore. Pegram earned Nation al crowns in both th e 250 an d 500cc Am at eur divi sions. Oth er rid ers taking d oubl e National titles included Georgi e Price of Sicklerville, New j er sey, who topped the 125cc Schoolboy and 125cc Amateur class es, and Brian Strong of Richmo nd , Virginia, who ca me out on top in the 80cc Stock (12-15) and SOcc Modified (12- 15) classes. In a ll, 15 Amateur Grand National Championships were awarded to 12 riders .following a two-race series which incl uded th e short tra ck in Sycamore and-a h alf mile ra ce he ld Ju ly II in Elkhorn , Wisconsin. A National scrambles (TT) had been sch edu led for Jul y 16 in Union Grove, Wisconsin, but th e day before th e event a torrential rain left th e area resembling a swamp. Attempts to resch edule or find an alternate site were fru itl ess. All th e riders in th e 250cc sh ort tra ck fin al at Sycamore knew Pegram was th e rider to beat aft er watching him win th e 250cc m ain a t th e Elkhorn Half Mile over Price a nd David Rabinette of Burton, Michiga n, but none of them were able to do it. Honda-mounted Pegram took th e win with a wire-to- wire rout o f the field. Second went to Clifton St einau er from Renssael ar , N ew York, a nd third wa s claimed by Cory Perreault of San jose, Ca lifornia . Ri ck Knuth ofDowns, Illinois, got the hol esh ot in the 500cc short tra ck mai n event, but the n ig ht bel o nged to Pegram. He shook off a slow start, kn ifed h is way through traffic, took over the lead and held it to the finish to win hi s second Nationa l title of 1987. Gary Morel II of , Saginaw, Michigan, finis hed second and Conrad Parsha ll of At hens, Pen nsylva nia. took third; Knuth finished fourth. Pegram also won th e 500cc half mil e final aboard a Harl e yDavidson, finishing ahead of H arleymounted Steve Beattie of Burlington, Ontario, Canada, and Audie H u ff of Peoria, Illinois. Thirteen- year-old Price held off Indiana sta te Champion P hil Palmer to tak e th e shon track win in th e 125cc Schoo lbo y class at Sycamore, th en topped the 125cc Am ateur division by besting Palmer aga in. Palmer kept th e pressure on but co u ldn' t get around Price in eithe r ra ce. Third in the Schoolboy class went to Bret Beyer of Oshkosh , Wisconsin, while Steinaur took third in th e Amateur rac e. Price finished second in both 125cc classes at th e half mil e in Elkhorn. H e fo llowed Sco tt Huff home in th e Amateur class and' Palmer home in th e Schoolboy division. Third in th e Sch oolboy cla ss went to Huff, while th e show spo t in th e Am a teur ra ce was claimed by Sta n Bauman o f Ri chmond, Michigan.
