The la rgest turnout o f riders were o n hand today, a t well over 150. It a lso m arked th e largest n umber of professional riders on ha nd th us far m th e season. WashinglOn 's SCOtt Steffy (Lyn n wood Yamaha) ca p italized, win n in g both 250cc Pro motos. In moto o n e, Steffy soa red to a n im p ressive rnoto wi n over Dennis Sweeten . Sweeten took over seco nd a fter Ron Sun dropped back after holding th e position for severa l laps. Dan Gregory finis hed th ird over Do n Bisceglia a nd Rob Annen: Moto two saw Steffy jumping into th e lead on lap one, pu ll in g o u t a seven seco nd lead by lap three. The battle for seco n d was left wid e ope n between H onda rider Mike Chase, Greg ory a n d Sweeten . Swee te n swooped up th e duo 10 sett le into seco nd, but wo u ld get no furthe r as Steffy had built up a co m fortable lead and cruised 10 the finish for a I- I win. Seco nd went 10 Sweeten with 2-2 rides, wh ile Gregory took third after posti ng impressive 4-3 performances. Followin g Gregory were Chase and Su n, who still shows flas hes of brillance, even th ough he's 50 or so p ounds ove r h is sl i m p hysiq ue o f when he was a t his best. Kenny Ol sen cha rged into th e lead at th e drop o f th e ga te in th e first 125cc Pro rn oto, quickl y pullin g away from a wild west shoot-ou t between G a ry Beyer and Cra ig Lambert. H art came through traffic 10 overtake Ol sen for th e lead, only to ta ke a soil sam p le. Th is put Olsen back into th e lead, bu t on ly until Hart cla wed his wa y back. " I wa s go in ' for it. After I crash ed, I was just th at m u ch more pumped 10 win," said Hart, Hart netted th e moto win with Ol sen , Beyer , Dav id Browning an d Lambert fill in g the top five. O lsen again sh o t out front a t th e ope n in g stages of th e second rno to, but after a lap, H a rt took over. Hart len O lsen 10 fend off Beyer for secon d . Both the com peti tion a nd th e tem peratur e (95 degrees) were a t its . hi ghest level so far th is seaso n. Bill y Len z has been th e dom in ant figure in 250cc Pro racing in th e Idaho panhandle. T on ight, Lenz joined si x overa ll winners a t th e troph y p resentati on a fter a 1-1- 1 sweep o f th e class on hi s CR-based flat tra cker. . Finish ing seco n d 10 Lenz was T odd Sommer s. Motosports MX By Bill Holt BYRON , IL, JULY 26 Breck Power picked th e week whe n a ll o f th e A a nd Open cla sses were co m bi ned to pull together o ne of hi s best ri des o f th e seaso na t Motosport s MX. H e aced both motos to grab th e overall. The co rnpe tio n behind him was noth ing less th an exciting with Ti m Schra rne r (3-2 ) takin g th e seco nd spot and AI Sch mi d t (2-3) holdin g down third . Jason Bardoner styled hi s way to th e 8Gec Junior overall by aci ng both mot os over Dav id Berquist (2-2) wh o held off Todd Ma yer (3-3). In the 8Gec Seni or it was Era n Sa lzma n w ho d ic ed with Chuck Whitesell ho me in th e seco nd. T om had n ipped Whitesell in the fir st m ot o but fell 10 third in the second a nd sett led for th ird overa ll beh ind Whitesell. Salzm a n came ba ck in the l25cc B a n d cha llenged for the to p spot with Dan ny Manno . L.afferty wins Foggy Mountain Endul'o By Paul Clipper BLAIN, PA , JULY 26 J ack Laffe rty Jr. ended a dry streak o f " too m any runs" by co nvinci n gly stea ling th e overall win a t the ann ua l Foggy Mounta in Brea kd o w n End uro. Lafferty, th e ECEA Enduro Champion for 1986, has only ta ken the o vera ll win in o ne o ther run th is vear, the Curly Fern Enduro, an d now has two wins under his belt co mpared to the th ree wi ns eac h o f Bru ce Den gl er an d Kevin Bennett. Th e Foggy Mountai n En d uro happens in the T uscarora Mountains of central Pen nsylvania , a nd it is un ique in :H leas t o ne respect: it is run o n a n entire ly " closed " co u rse , a nd as a res u lt you need no ' license p la te, ligh ts, horns, m irrors or other stree t para pherna lia to enter th e enduro - a ra re si tua tio n in the eas t th ese days. T he reason for th is is total coopera tion bet ween the tow ns peop le, th e state a nd co unty off icials, the sta te fores t folks, a nd the sponsorin g cl u b, th e Susq ue ha n na Off- Road Riders. Th is vear's co urse featured mostly single-track trails wi th twotracks, asp ha lt, an d a smatter in g of farmers ' field s to keep you awa ke. Laffert y just seemed to hav e it in gea r before a ny body else in th e morning , beating Ben ne tt , h is closest co m pe ti tio n by a fu ll point in th e mornin g 's first tigh t section. T ha t set the pa ce, a nd Bennett had to push hard, j us t to sta y even with h is old ridi ng partner through the rest of the morning a nd th e earl y a fternoon. And then the bo ttom dropped ou t. All da y we 'd been hearing rumors th at the aft ernoon was gomg to be a trai l ride, an d it would excep t for one " little" eight-mile section that wo uld not let up! The section was ti ght, rock y, log-strewn trails through open woods - yo u co u ld see as far ahead as yo u wanted, bu t th ere wa s no wa y to go fast enough to keep th e schedu le! Ben netr'sIuck turned sour wh en hi s front tire went flat, leaving hi m wi th no way to beat Lafferty's ti me. Bennett lost one point more th an J ack Jr. through the section , lea ving him with 14 points to the Husky rid er 's 12. Finishing thi rd overall and High Poi nt A was NETRA rider Bo b Dana on a Honda X R200 . Steve Vanasse, th e reign in g NETRA En duro Cha m p ion, took th e A Med ium class on hi s KTM fro m th e fourth overa ll position. One po in t down from Va na sse was Bria n Blanchard, rid ing to fift h overall a nd seco nd AA. The Su squehan na O ff-R oad Riders received many co m p liments after th e event, even th ough all of th e riders were tired and swea ty from th e 90 degree h ea t.
