By Brian Catterson ROSAMOND , CA, AUG. 2 Ben William s won th ree races aboard his Kawasaki 250 Ninj a during th e ARRA's six th race of 1987 at Willow Sp r i ngs Intern a ti on al R a cewa y. With Kawasak i posting co n tingencies of $500, $300 a nd $ 100 for firs t through th ird, William s took home $1500 in Team Green m oney. T emperatures of 105 degrees in th e shade by midafternoon, forced the decision to reduce the usual eigh tlap sprints to six laps. T he ex tre me heat ca used a slick track, but fortunately, few inc idents. Williams, who won four races and $2000 d uring last m onth's mee ting, ~ got h is day o ff to a good start by win ni ng the 450cc Fo ur-Stroke M? dified Pro duct ion class. A full field o f riders in the 250cc and Open classes in addition to a Mini class provided th e fair goers with 'a n exci ting evening of racing, and it wa s Craig Est ell e claiming the Open class win. T h ree hea ts o f 250s co m me nc ed th e program with Brian Tillson, Gary Conkling and Larry P~gram being vict orious a nd advancing to th e semis. Ron Bertrand in semi number one led th e field in lap one o n ly to be d isplaced o n th e seco nd circuit by Pegram, who co m p le ted th e n ext seven laps in first to take the win. Duane Veed er made it look easy in captu ri ng the seco n d sem i. In the fin al, Pegram followed Conkling for two laps before powering arou nd an d into fir st pl ace w here h e rem ained for th e n ext ei gh t circ u its to grab th e victo ry. Open semi one again pitted Veeder an d P egram, wi th Pegram h olding the lead for th e firs t three laps. Veeder ~ot by Pegr am for first and appeared iri control for th e next four lap s, b ut Pegr am kep t on the pressure to beat o u t Veeder by on ly inches at th e fin ish line. No vice winner Zahrt had a nearly per fect record for the series go.ing in to todav's race a nd sh e lost n o lime in estab lish ing co ntro l. Sh e too k both m otos' holeshots and p ra nced Tina Zahrt won the Novice class in the Women's Championship Series at LAC~X. away from the rest of the Novi ces like a ballet dancer at a h oe-d own. lahrt closed out th e series with such a point lead she cou ld have skipped the entire seco nd m ot o and still won. Sh e p robably al so won a promotion to Intermediates. Sheila Moretz was third in th e sta nd in gs before today and fin ished th ere for th e series : Moretz had to work her way up from midpack a t the sta rt of m o to o ne a nd was in second to stay by la p six . Moretz bega n m ot o two in seco n d behind lahrt and sta yed th ere for another seco nd and seco nd overall. All this on th e only 80cc bike in the Women's class. T here was a classic battle for first in th e Intermediate class. Evenson a nd Jillian Roth were tied for the series lead in th at class th rough th e first four m ot os, T oday was Evenso n's day as she took th e lead in bo th m o tos and wen t o n for two decisive wins and th e series champ io ns hip. Roth, meanwhile, had her hands fu ll with K.O. H a lfh il l. Rot h split th e mo tos with H alfhill a nd took second for th e da y an d seco n d in the series. J ackson had a sli m points' lead over Lisa Peterso n aft er last week 's race a t Gl en Helen and looked 10 ma inta in that as she took the m o to one h ol esh o t and went on to win, followed a ll the way by Peterson. Both ra cers we re edgy at th e start of m o to two . Jackso n shot to th e lead in turn o ne, but had some engine problems an d fell to six th. Step ha nie J ones to ok th e lead wit h Peterson in seco n d. J ackson wa s h ot an d m oved to fourth wi th in two tu rns a nd was in third by th e end of lap one . At the en d of lap two , J ackson leap ed into seco nd with a banzai jump an d a n aggressive inside cu t. . She tried th e same move to get th e lea d a t the end of lap th ree but slid OUI and dro p ped back 10 th ird . She quickly closed back u p o n Peterson who was still in seco n d and.rogeth er, they ch a rged o n J ones. J a ck son jumped to seco n d and Peterson too k the lead. J ackson made her move into the lead bu t went down h ard trying to get arou nd a lapped rider. Sh e wa s back to third again an d fin ish ed there, beh ind Peterson and Jones.
