Dail dials in Middleford Dirt Drags By Woody Miller SEAFO RD, DE, JU LY 17 Ronn ie Dail remained un defea ted after the fifth round of the Delmorria Dirt Drag Championship Series. Dail took his fifth straight overall win aboard his R&M Racing/ Mike Dun n / Silver Bullet Kawasaki, aft er stiff competition by Andy Owens, rid ing a R&M Cycle/ Reapers M.e. Accessories/ G ivens Flowers Ha rleyDavidso n. Dail and Andy Cr ivens squared off in th e final round. When th e green flag dropped , Crivens was out of the hole firs t, but when the dust settled. it was ca lled a tie by the lin e judges. In the run off, it was Dail ge lling th e nod and th e win. The track, des igned . by T omm y Newm an , a ttracted more than 340 riders Saturday n ight with th e 250cc division being th e largest of th e Expe rt classes. The 250cc Expert class started o u t with Cooper in the lead, Ka wasa ki's Cla y H oensh ell in second followed by Yama ha-mounted j ohn Lamber t. Wh ile Cooper pulled a way from th e pack , H onda rid er Cliff Palmer started motorin g o n and by the th ird lap had managed 10 slip past Lambert a nd move into th ird posit ion. Cooper . was far beyond th e o the r riders' reac h , and in comp lete control. He cruised 10 the chec kered flag w i t h H o en sh ell in second a n d Pal mer tak in g third. T he second mo to provided m uch excitement for the racing fans as Cooper, once agai n , snatched th e ho leshot followed by Palmer and H oenshel l. H oensh ell bolted past Palmer within th e first la p and set hi s sig h ts o n Cooper. While Hoenshell wa s p lanning h i s a ttack, H onda-mo unt ed Steve Bayles eased past Palmer to move into third pl ace. As Palmer passed Ba yles for seco nd positio n , a determined H oen shell worked h is way from the back of th e pack and glided past Bayles and then Palm er to mov e into second place. Cooper fin ished with a huge lead follow ed by Hoensh ell in second and Palmer in third. . The 500cc Expert class had . th e least number of riders but was by far th e most exci ting event of th e evenin g. Coo per was first off th e line with H oen sh ell close behind in th e first moto, T he two ta lented Expert riders rem ai ned in that position unti l th e wh ite flag lap when Hoensh ell took a n insi de line a nd sto rmed past Cooper in a corn er to assume th e lead. On th e last la p , an ins p ired Cooper blazed past H oenshell to ca p ture th e win , with Hoen shell finishi ng close behi nd. The second rnoto saw th e two rid ers wheel-to-wheel going into th e first turn, with Cooper coming o u t slightly ah ead . By th e second corner Hoenshell had taken th e lead, and despite Cooper's efforts, Hoensh ell went on to claim th e rn oto win and th e ov erall vict ory in th e Open Expert class. At th e start of the fir st race - th e Veteran Master class - Dougla s quietl y ga ined th e lead. After five la ps of racing he was th e winner by a wide margin o ver Dua ne Hugh es a nd Mike Marinkovich . The second moto saw a close battl e for th e lead between Dougl as and Hug hes. T his time it was Hughes who go t the lead into the first lefthand corner , bu t it wa s Douglas that had th e lead co ming o u t of the second corner. As th ey exi ted th e th ird corner, a high banked 1800 berm wit h severa l lines, it was sti ll Douglas, but H ug hes was closer. As the mo to was closing it was obvio us that Hu ghes became aware that Marinkovi ch was riding an ins pi red race and "Ser iously desired second place. At that time, a nd it was nearl y too late, Hughes ga ssed it. Hughes pl aced seco nd and ro ok second overall behind Dougl as a nd a hea d of Marinkovich. At the end of eig h t la ps, Co ll ings had a comfor table lead over Mill er for the win. T he 250cc class saw th e return of j eff Saleva n after a month la y off. Bostard kept the pressure on a nd made no mis ta kes 10 power u p thro ugh th e pack a nd gain a second pl ace at th e checkered flag. In the second moto, Nelson had things back in control and' p ut his Honda o ut in fro nt of everyone, ho wever, h is 5-1 even ing was go od on ly for thi rd overa ll. H e wa s followed at th e payo u t window by Wooten who trai led him to the checkers as well in th e second moto. The O pen Pro class was a sevenrider co ntest with Clayton Blood and Bru ce Ma nzoni ha vin g th e best records coming into the race. But neither ri der figured very high in the overall standings as jack H ul se a nd his Ma xima /Simmo ns /Goose Bro thers Ra cing-backed Ho nda pu t together a smooth pair of pe rformances to ta ke the overall win. In the first Open P ro class moto, Blood and Ma nzoni were ru n ni ng u p fro nt early o n bu t each faded as the pressure of Hulse and Tim McCl in tock came to the fore. First Hulse got by Manzon i w i th seve ra l laps rem aining a nd th en he di spl aced Blood. In turn , Blood was barely able 10 hold off the charge of McClintock. T he fin ishing o rder was H u lse, Blood, McClintock a nd Manzoni .
