PooveyJIO.wers to victory In Parkersburg Regiona'HM By Dave Despain 42 PARKERSBURG, WV, JULY 17 Honda-mounted Terry Poovey of Garland, Texas, took a two-inch m~rgin of victory over fellow Texan Sammy Sweet in the Eastern Regional Championship Half Mile,· held at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Parkersburg. The AMA Eastern Regional, which included a Junior National (covered elsewhere in this issue) and Pro-Am competition, kicked off a full weekend of racing that ended the following night when Bubba Shobert won the Camel Pro National Half Mile. California's Mike McDonald worked his way through traffic to win the Pro-Am main event, adding to his subslantial Eastern Regional Championship point lead. All the Camel Pro Series SlarS except Scott Parker and Jay ·Springsteen practiced and qualified for the Regional, with Harley-Davidson factory rider Chris Carr of California setting the time trial pace. Carr's 24.786-second lap bettered the track record by more than three-tenths of a second. Doug Davis, Shobert and Steve Eklund followed, earning pole positions for the four Expert heats; 48 experts made the show. Connecticut's Jason Fletcher; Mickey Rusden of Pennsylvania and California's Todd Bridges won the Pro-Am heats, with Fletcher turning the quickest six laps and earning the pole position for the main event. Shobert and two-time National Champion Ricky Graham, their homework for the National complete, scratched from the Expert program. The opening Expert heat was won by Sweet over Poovey and Carr. Michigan's Brian Atherton claimed the second heat by besting Davis and Freddie SpencerlSuperTrapp's Doug Chandler, while the third heat went to Eastern Regional point leader Steve Morehead. The fourth heat opened with fireworks when former National champ Steve Eklund and Californian Wink Freilas crashed in tum one and Eklund's Gardner Racing Harley-Davidson went up in flames. The reSlart saw Ted Boody of Oklahoma defeat Maryland's Rodney Farris and Pete Hames of California. Rusden built an early lead in the Pro-Am main event while McDonnell worked his way back from a bad Slart. McDonnell caught the leader with three laps to go and passed in a handlebar-banging battle which lasted all the way through turns three and four. Rusden was a solid second and David Reeves nipped Fletcher at the line for third. In the Expert main, Morehead pulled a great holeshot, then faded to an eventual seventh-place finish. Sweet, Poovey and Boody came steaming by, locked in a three-rider battle for the lead that would last the whole race. Carr charged from a back row Slart to harass the leaders from fourth. Lap after lap, Sweet held a tight line and the point position while Boody challenged from the very top of the wide groove and Poovey repeatedy stuck his front wheel • between them. On the final two circuits, Boody and Carr fell off the pace, victims, respectively, of poor tire adhesion and lack of brakes. On the final lap, Sweet drove into three hard on the bottom, knowing Poovey would come out of four on the high line. Poovey did just that, timing his pass to perfection and hitting the finish line two inches in from of Sweet. "Once I decided to ride, I figured we'd go all out to win it," said Poovey, who had considered scratching to save himself for the Nationa\. "I put on the softest tire I could buy and it really hooked up." I Teall y bem the thing in there the last lap," said Sweet. "I knew he'd . be coming. We were just a little short. " SUNNYMEAD, CA, JULY 12 Suzuki-mounted Jeb Brock, sponsored by Pro-Circuit and Suzuki Country Racing, made good use of a !I-I Lally to wrap up the overall victory in the 250cc Intermediate class at DeAnza Cycle Park. Second place, via a 2-2 combo, w.ent to Yamaha rider John Singletary, while third went to another Yamaha pilot, Craig Davis. The start of the first moto saw Singletary blast into the lead followed by Davis, David Halverson (Open Intermediate), Brock, Richard Geraghty, Mike Ostermarm (125cc), Steve Piatoni (Open) and Ron Lawson. By the end of the first lap, however, Davis had slipped by Singletary for the lead. From that point on, the race was all Davis', and all second place Singletary could do was try and keep Davis in sight and mainlain his advantage over Brock. As the checkered flag fell, it was Davis laking the 250cc class win over Singletary, Brock, Lawson and Geraghty. The 125s went to Randy Danylo followed by ScOll Bums, Kit Palmer and Jeff David. Halverson topped the Opens ahead of Piatoni and Lou Delorio. . In the deciding second moto, it was Brock and his Suzuki jamming into the lead ahead of SingletarY, Ostermann, Danylo, Halverson and·Lawson. First moto winner Davis was ninth. Knowing he had to keep Singletary at bay in order to wrap up the 250cc class overall, Brock kept his Suzuki pegged the whole moto. Singlelary stayed within striking dislance every lap but couldn't find an openq.g to pass. Brock held on for the win and the overall, while Singlelary finished second and Davis worked his way into third. Lawson again took fourth. Danylo captured his second win for· the 125cc Intermediate class overall ahead of Bums, David and Palmer. Piatoni came back and topped the second Open moto for the overall ahead of Halverson and Delorio. Results JR CYCLES: 1. Ci8S8r Galvez (Kaw); 2. Tony CeteI08 (Kew). MINI BEG: 1. Chad Gilt (Hon); 2. Villella tops Juniors at Parkersburg HM By Dave Despain PARKERSBURG, WV, JULY 17 Series point leader Bryan Ville1la claimed a come-from-behind win in round 12 of the Junior National Championship Series, held tonight at West Virginia Motor Speedway in Parkersburg. In his last ride as a junior, Ohio's Scott SlUmp topped qualifying with a 25.4!15-Slecon·d time trial before making his expert debut in Saturday's Camel Pro Series event. Stump edged Washington's Darell Davis, second-ranked Junior in the nation, in the first Junior heat race, while Villella handily won the second qualifier to set up their threeway battle in the feature final. In the main event, Davis grabbed the holeshot, intent on beating Villella and overcoming a threepoint deficit in the National standmgs. Davis had taken the point lead with back-to-back TT wins at Santa Fe and Peoria, but Villella regained the advanlage with a half mile win at Hagerstown, Maryland, a week prior to Parkersburg. As Davis opened a 40-yard lead, Stump and Villella battled for second with Stump running a high line that be~an to reel in Davis at midrace. Wllh three laps to go, Villella adopted Stump's up-top tactic and made a breath-taking run at the leaders; the trio shuffled the deck on the final two laps. First Stump passed Davis, whose motor had begun to lose top-end power, then Villella swooped around Stump as they turned for the white £lag and held on to win by a length. Davis sellied for third and fell a full 10 points behind Villella in the, Junior Championship chase. Behind the leaders, Craig Howard nipped Canada's Steve Aseltine by inches for fourth,. while Craig Estelle took sixth over ScOll Saunders, Mark Corselli, Kris Kiser and Recil Hart.
