Elwood coo, at
CallahanMX
By Gwen Millan
CALLAHAN, FL, JULY 5
Kenneth Elwood was the star of the
new Callahan MX track, as he
showed the 125c A and B cla ses his
way of conquering the clay/dirt
combination suface at thestart of the
FMC ummer Series.
Troy Coke took the lead in the
125cc A and B cia s. Coker, a B cLa srider, wa flying hi~h on hi Kawasaki. Elwood was Just a heartbeat
away with A rider Mark Peterson
kno kin~ at his door, al 0 on a
Kwasaki. Claude McQuaig was
fourth; fifth was Ernie Millan.
On lap two McQuaig went down,
letting Peterson come from third to
first place. Cok r was second, and
Elwood was able to salvage third.
Millan was down on an inside turn,
allowing four or five riders to pass
him. Getting back into control,
Elwood was able to get back into first
place spot by the fourth lap with
Peterson, McQuaig and Randy
Langford hot in pursuit. Coker
seemed to be tiring out and was
holding fifth.
The next lap Millan made a move
on .coker and chased har.d after
Langford. Lapped riders were not in
the picture, making passing on an
already tight track even more difficult. The race remained the same as
Elwood claimed the victory.
The second moLO was again
Elwood and Peter on in the A class,
and Millan and Langford fighting
it out for the B cia s lead. Mc Quaig,
John Gentilcore and Coker were
following in a tight threesome. The
next lap, Gentilcore passed
McQuaig. McQuaig kept pressing
hard, until he tucked Gentilcore
behind him.
The last lap saw Elwood and
Peterson first and second and Millan
a strong first in the B class. At the
checkered flag McQuaig made his
last ditch effort to pass Langford and
did just that.

Lewis bags Las Vegas
Motocross
By Dick Goodwin
LAS VEGAS, V, JUNE 20
Honda-mounted Kyle Lewis turned
things every which way but 100 e,
a he smoked the l25cc Pro cia at
the ilverbowl of Motocross, wiring
both of hi- heat races and coming
from off the pace to capture the main.
Lewi was really pumped for the
first heat, grabbing the holeshot and
walking away from everyone el e 011
his way to a no-sweat win. "Kamikaze"
Kerry Mulligan, top Intermediate,
fini hed second in the combined
race, while pro rider Scott Underwood placed third.
Lewis jumped out froot, again in
moto-two. Intermediates Chris
Pocino and Kerry MuJligan and pro
Ken Arnold were waging an intense
battle for the second slot. Lewis
stayed in front but wasn't putting
much daylight on the tenacious
Mulligan, who had won the figltt for
second. Pocino was hanging tough,
but pros Sean Steels and Underwood
were putting heavy pressure on him
for third. Lewis WIred the race as
Mulligan went down on the last lap
in a tangle with a lapper. Pecino
raced to second overall and first
Intermediate, just ahead of Underwood and Steele.
EP's Underwood broke Lewis'
tranglehold in the main, as he
colored the holeshot with his Suzuki.
Intermediates Pocino and Mulligan
were right behind him as favorite
Lewis gated at midpack. Pecino laid
his Kawasaki down in a tUTD-and was
trampled by' half the field, but he
jumped right up and continued
racing.
Lewis, meanwhile, was working
his way through traffic to econd
place. He and Underwood joined in
orne. wild and hairy racing for
several laps. Lewis tried to tuff ott
in a corner, bu t they both went down.
Lewis recovered first and went on to
win comfortably over the hardcharging Underwood. Ken Arnold
finished a (Tong third.

Johnson, Unger top
Gim'i Sprints
By Clint Johnson
GIMLI, MANITOBA, CA ADA
JULY 19
The Kevin JohnsonlTevor Unger
confrontations are quickly becoming
the main attractions at Manitoba
Roadracing Association's sprint
weekends. At GimJi Raceway on
unday, Johnson won both Open
classes on his llOOcc Suzuki and took
second in one of the 750s. Unger
countered by collecting wins in both
750cc classes, 600cc Production, as
well as second to Johnson in both
Open races.
From the first lap of the Open
PrOduction heat, Johnson, the established champion, tried to create a
comfortable lead on Unger. Unger,
riding a Winnipeg Sun Race Team
Suzuki, closed in by the midway
point, but never came close enough
to pass. Chris Lacy took third.
Unger got that one back in the
750s, though, edging out Johnson.
The real racing was going on back
in the pack, as Lacy, Paul Brooker
and Jim Fehey swapped positions
with Lacy taking third. The 750cc
