Ferrell flies at Speedway USA By Scott Daloisio 34 VICTORVILLE, CA, JULY 25 Dubb Ferrell came out the big winner at Speedway USA when he won The eight-lap Handicap main event and placed second to Bobby Schwartz in the Scratch main. Ferrell was the "Rider of the Week" at the southern California speedway facility and that brought him 10 Speedway USA for the second consecutive week.. Ferrell's first main event for the evening was in Scratch racing competition. He entered that event perfect on the Scratch side of the ledger and he had recorded a win over Schwartz in their semi. In fact it took some last lap heroics for Schwartz to even get into the Scratch main. Scotty Brown had been fighting off the advances of the 1986 National Champion but when he drifted a little too far off the"pole on the final lap, Schwartz shot under him and made it 10 the main. The first attempt to run the four lapper got as far as the first bend. Schwartz, out of three, and Ferrell, ou t of two, were racing for the first tum when Ferrell ended up sailing over the bars and landing head first against the crash wall. Ferrell was shaken but after a couple of minutes, he scrambled to his feet and prepared for the restart. Schwartz had the Budweiser/ Silkolene/C. T.!. Brace/Justice Brothers/Bell Weslake itl the lead immediately, on the restart, but Ferrell wanted to change things. He got inside in tum two and momentarily edged his front tire into first but Schwartz rode around him on the back chute. Ferrell parked as they came out of turn four the first time and that forced Keith Larsen 10 take evasive action. That was all Schwartz needed and he ran away. The race ended three laps later with Schwartz scoring a big· win over Ferrell, Steve Lucero and Larsen. Things were a little different for Ferrell in the Handicap main. Local rider Tony Bienert had the lead from the short yardage at the start but Ferrell, from the 40, was weaving tlis way through traffic. He polished off Scott Brant for second in turn two on lap two and before the lap had ended, he had the PAX Racing/Puente Ready Mix/JR Concrete Pumping/Cirello Racing/ STP Weslake in the point position. After putting Bienert back in second, Ferrell moved it out. Bienert went wide in the first bend on lap three and moved from second 10 fifth. Brant moved back into second with Tuff McBride third. Try as they might, nobody was going 10 catch Ferrell, and he won by half a straight. Weslake riding Brant hung on for second with McBride third and "Fast" Eddie Castro fourth. Charlie Jones nabbed his first ever will in speedway when he outdistanced the pack in the S~pport class main event. Results SCRATCH: 1. Bobby Sch_nz (Wes): 2. Dubb Ferrell (West 3. Ascot Speedway win to Schwartz By Scott Daloisio GARDENA, CA, JULY 23 • Bobby Schwartz warmed up for the Budweiser American Cup Challenge by winning his 30th Scratch main in 16 outings at Ascot South Bay Stadium. On the Handicap side of the program, local favorite Doug Nicol won his first main of the season when he easily paced the eight lapper. Schwartz, who has been named captain of the USA squad for the American Cup Challenge, was superb in Scratch racing. O>ming into the main he had won his two preliminary races and like the case has been most of the season at Ascot, that propelled him on to the win in the main. The magic touch came through once again as Schwartz.drew the pole for his Budweiser/Cirello Racing/ C.T.I. Brace/Silkolene/Oakley Weslake. As usual, he was the first rider to reach the first bend. The pack stayed within striking distance until they came off tum two for the first time, but Schwartz pegged the throttle and quickly opened up a huge lead. Robert Pfetzing moved into second by the end of the first circuit and he knew he would have to make the outside work.. if he had any hopes of catching Schwartz. Pfetzing saw his hopes end when he wheelied off turn two on the second circuit. That also ended the - victory aspirations of Bobby Ott as he had 10 park 10 avoid hitting Pfetzing. When the checkered flag came out, it was Schwartz over Pfetzing by four bike lengths. Third went to Ott with Steve Lucero fourth. Scott Brant copped at the start of the Handicap main, but Kurt Nicol, on the Elite Corp.lRuss Elliott/Dan Thurson/Ascot/Bates/David Shigirnatsu Weslake, began 10 hound him immediatedly. Nicol found a hole on the inside and he wrestled the point position away from Brant as they went down the back chute the first time. Once at the head of the field, Nicol was gone. Tuff McBride came out of the start in third and he maintained that position until lap three when former British Champion Phil Collins streaked by. At the halfway point, Nicol had a big lead over Brant and Collins. Far behind them, McBride was busy trying to fend off the charges of Schwartz, Gary Hicks, Lance King and Pfetzing. That was one of the best fights of the night. When the checkered came down and ended the proceedings for the night, it was Nicol well out in front of Brant, Collins, Hicks and McBride. Ou was the big winner on the tiny din oval for the third time in the last four weeks as he won the Scratch main event. Ou, who the week before beat both Mike Faria and Bobby Schwartz in a Scratch semi and then came back to beat Faria once again in the four lap main, was ~rfect on the night. He went three for three and after his final outing, he was presented with a set of steak knives, as his trophy from Cycle Rider, Inc. Ou was challenged by John Sandona, Phil Collins and Dubb Ferrell in the four lapper. Sandona and Collins haven't made a lot of IMS mains in 1987 while Ferrell competes at the track infrequently. Ou was out of two on the start .with Ferrell coming from the pol~. Ott, Cirell.o Racing/STP / Arai/ Backstreet Limousine/Racecrafteis Godden, beat Ferrell into the first bend and from that point on,.it was a war. Ou manned the outside while Ferrell took the short route around on the pole. Time after time Ferrell would come up to c~llenge [or the lead but Ou would maintain a slight advantage as they powered into the next bend. On the final lap, it looked as though Ott had the win for sure but as they came off the' final comer, Ferrell got a good drive. He closed on Ou but when the checkered £lag came out, it was Ou by a half a bike length. Sandona was third with Collins fourth. A few minutes later, it was time for the eight lap Handicap main event and Ferrell, Collins and Sandona were all a part of the festivities. The event featured all back yardage riders. Keith Larsen, Ed Castro, Scott Brant, Bart Bast, Ferrell and Sandona were 30 yard line starters. Steve Lucero, who won the 1985 California State Championship on the same track, was off the 40 as was England's Collins. Larsen was the man of fortune on the night. When he arrived at the track, he wasn't even on the program. He was moved in to replace the injured Mike Faria. He was penalized for jumping the semi start but he came back, at the finish line, to narrowly edge Scotty Brown for the final transfer spot in the main. Once in the main Larsen didn't want to waste the good fortune he had already received as he put the Vern Marshall Dywall/Nautique Sportswear/Simple Green/Highland Framers/STP Jawa into the lead and never looked back. Ferrell came home second with Bast third and Lucero fourth. Results SCRATCH; 1. Bobby On (Gdn); 2. Dubb Ferrell (Wes) 3. John Sondona (Wes); 4. Phil Collins (Wes). HDCP: 1. Keith Larsen (Jew); 2. Tysor's first win came in the Middleweight Supersport event on his COl1linemal/Shoei/Cycle Nuts and Bolts/D.I.D Honda Hurricane. He led from the £lag bu t lost the lead to Jeff Atwell when he ran wide and off the track in turn three. Atwell led through the next two turns but then missed a downshift and crashed at low speed. Tysor cruised to victory and Atwell remounted 10 take sixth place. The Middleweight SJ1perbike and Formula Two events were repeats of the Tysor/Atwell battles with Tysor coming out on top in each race.
