Runner-up Danny Elders leads eventual winner Greg Smith during 450cc Superbike action at Pueblo Motorsports Park in Colorado. Elders hot, Hopperstad wins Pueblo RR By Chet Carman l'UEBLO, CO, JULY 19 Solorado Springs' Danny Elders aged a few years in his first-ever' serious run on the coveted Moumain Roadracing Association' number one plate at Pueblo Motorsports ~ark's high-speed 2.25-mile road lrace track. The aging factor was primarily the unusually high temperatures (uno£ficial estimates ranged from juSt over 90 to just over 250 degrees), combined> ith an allnight shop session Saturday night gelling his new Alpine Suzukisponsored GSXR Superbike ready to race. In a late week testing session, it was discovered that the wrong 'wheel spacer had been installed by the bike's previous owner, Aussie AMA Superbike competitor Galen Taylor. Elders barely got'the damage repaired in time to go racing with ·it More teething pains cropped up early Sunday morning in the form of an AWOL coumershaft sprocket nut, gears that liked to leap away from one another wiVt0ut permission and a cylinder on periodic sitdown strike due to fuel-feed 'problems. The wraith-thin, 27-year-old exmotocrosser, also sponsored by BG Lubricants, after struggling through 10 starts, including ~ee heat races (all races were "heat" races !:his day), upally collapsed in the pits and vented Gatorade coolant all over the ,ground. Elder's best finish was a second in 450cc Superbike, where he thrilled spectators, corner workers and himself by flogging his Alpine 250 Gamma Suzuki, using up tires and backing it into corners against various bigger, more powerfu I machines. He would have had a second place in the Formula Colorado class, where his Gamma was ( gridded on the pole, but a jumped start, followed by a mix-up regarding ~where he was supposed to regrid, resulted in a one-lap penalty which tlropped him from second to 12th. (Elders is filing a leller of grievance to try and salvage some points.) It was unsure at presstime wether Elders is still ranked second in MRA overall points behind defending '86 and '87 Champion, John Hopperstad. Boulder Yamaha/BMW rider Hopperstad put in yet another day of consistent top-five finishes. Should Hopperstad retain number one for 1988, it would be a first in MRA history. Open and 750cc Production Champion Ricky Orlando, also of Boulder, challenged Hopperstad in the Open Production class until a thrown chain propelled Orlando from second to DNF. David Old, of Sama Fe, New Mexico, generated the most excitement of the day (except for the impromptu wet-everything display by the water spigots at day's end) by selling a new unoHicial track record of 1.37:30 aboard his ultra-trick, ultra-fast, ultra-exotic, ultra-high cubic dollar NS500 Honda. Just before his record lap, Old was considering dropping out due to heat and fatigue. Hmmm ... he should feel so bad more often. Old finished second in Formula One. There were few crashes of note; Colorado Springs' Bob Hicks went down at high speed at the end of Pueblo's quarter mile-plus from straight, Donny Hough bailed into the fast turn-one dirt in a horriblelooking incident that produced a dust cloud resembling a 19505 Abomb test at White Sands, and Tim Banname totalled his bike in a heat race. Hough and Banname escaped with mostly financial injuries while Hicks is out for the season, partly due to the expense. of rebuilding his GSXR for the second time this year, buying a set of new leathers and partly due to the time required to grow a quantity of new skin.
