Halstead hammers Motosports MX By Bill Holt BYRON, IL, JULY 12 Taking advantage of premiun conditions at Motosports Park MX was Richard Halstead. Halstead served notice that he was the man to beat b'y taking back-to-back moto wins in . both the 125 and 250cc classes. In the 125cc Halstead led Aaron 'Yonely and Ken Hempen home in both motos, and in the 250cc he held off the charges of Jackson in both motos with Jeff Ricker holding on to third overall with a 5-2 day. In the 80cc Junior it was Eron Ezerins (2-1) taking the overall over Jeff Faley (1-2) and Jason Bardorrer (4-3). The 80cC' Senior class saw Chuck Whitesell ace both motos over Richard Tom (2-2) for the overall with John Young hanging on to the , third overall with a (4-3) finish. The big group of 125cc B riders were split, and the first group saw Darren Hill (1-2) taking top honors and the big MMC Series points over Adam Garvey (3-1) and Mike DeFrancesco (4-4). The 125cc B Division two was a real dogfight between Don Grey and Ted Cieminski. Grey took the overall with a (2-1) finish over Cieminski (2,1). Third went to Tom Smith who followed them home in both motos. The 250cc Bs were also split and both classes saw double mota winners. Division one belonged to' Mark Wright. Wright led the battIe fOl second in both motos. That battle was between Tim Filippi and Ken Kotatka. Filippi's 3-2 finish was what it took for the second spot, leaving Kotatka (2-2) in third. The 1980 and 1981 SOcc Expert state champ has ridden in the shadows of Albert Firestine, Tim Buchli and Stacey Cook since moving up to the 125cc Pros, but today he experienced some of the old glory by winning the class overall. In round one, he followed LeeVern Berry an9 Cook into turn one. Cook took the lead later in lap one, but crashed near the end of lap two. He ree.ntered in third and took back the lead from Berry on the last .lap. He won ahead of Berry and DeHoff. A huge pileup in turn one of moto two was triggered by Cook, when he went down after getting the hoJeshoL Berry was in the melee, but DeHoff avoided it, taking the lead ahead of 'Keith Campbell. DeHoff held off Campbell for five laps, as Cook was charging from 16th to fourth. While attempting to cut inside Jim Mitchell for third, he clipped Mitchell's rear tire and highsided.
