Canoga Park, California GR~ENE, NY, JULY II Pat Cliff, who a week earlier completed the hottest racing weekend of his career, kept the fire lit as he won the Handicap main event at Action Park East Speedway. Warren Diem racked up yet another victory in Scratch racing. The team of Lewis and Lewis finished one and two in the first Handicap heat as son John led father George home. Diem, ·George Lazor and Mark Edwards won the other three heats. Mike Cortese held the lead in the first Handicap semi, setting the pace ahead of Mike Buman and Tom Burge. Burge and Lazor made the pass on Buman during lap four, but Cortese appeared untouchable. Cortese then fell with one lap remaining allowing Berge to take the checkered with_ l.azor and Buman in the other transfer spot.. Semi number two found Cliff heating up as he led all six laps keeping Diem and Damien Cornwell in arrears. Cliff took the lead off the 20-yard line in the main event leading Mike Buman around on lap one. On lap three, Diem had made his way up' through the pack to take second place. But that is as far as he could ~t. By that point Cliff had an Insurmountable lead. Cliff wheelied across the line for a win that would send him to the 30-yard-line for the next race. Cli£( also took the first of the four Scratch heats downing John''Boogie'' !:.ewis. Lalor had a four-lap battle with Bruce Nelson in their heat before beating him to the checkered as both riders made the transfer. Diem and Burge conquered the remaining heats. After Diem bested Nelson, Cliff and Cornwell in the first semi, Lalor, Burge, Lewis and Edwards took the line for one of the wilder semis in recent weeks. Lalor took the lead into the first comer and jetted down the back straight ahead of Lewis. When he came down the front chute Lalor saw the red light had come on and he slowed in turns one and two as the other riders went by. The race was then red-flagged becauSe of the electrical problem that tripped the red light. Lalor won the restart, but the real casualty was Lawis had a ttansfer spot in the original race ·but Could only muster third in the restart. Lalor grabbed the holeshot in the maio event out of the third position. &1. SCORES AT LAGUNA SECA * 1 at * Marco Lucchinelli st Pro Twins Laguna Seca Classic ••• 010 YOU KNOW?
