Gran Prix from the very start. Ed Key and Dennis Martin started up front and stayed fairly close the first lap. lampach quickly rode a string of record setting lap times and was soon in the clear. Yamaha FZRlOOO-mounted John Eidengerger was in second place by the second lap, a position he would hold LO the finish. Mike Harth and Scott Russell up from Georgia for Saturday's National Endurance quickly sliced through the field from the back of the pack starting positions. Both Harth's and Russell's drivers were cut short by problems with their bikes. Harth's big Suzuki wasn't getting enough fueL Harth later explained the tank was not full enough. And the silencers on Russell's Suzuki fell off during the race. Harth and Russell were able to hold on for third and fourth positions. Jamie James rode an excellent race from the rear of the field LO get by Ed Key on the last lap LO get fifth. "Everything just seems to be falling in place for me right now," said Zampach. "I set my suspension up a little stiffer and it really makes a difference, the bike's much more stable. " Zampach won the B Production (part of the Suzuki GSXR Series) after following Harth and Eidenberger for two laps. Once Zampach was around those two he seemed to pull away with ease turning the. record setting'l :28.56 in that race. Eidenberger held off Harth for second and Jamie James got by Scott Russell for fourth after Russell ran his Suzuki off the track. Jay Williams, riding a Honda got the lead off the line in the first qualifying heat. The Bultaco of Lex Nuckols was much in evidence challenging for the lead. On the white £lag lap Nuckols made it work. Williams went down in the process, moving Chris Rickman illlo second. Wayne Eckert was a very close third. The second heat had Eckert get everything together. He led from green light to checkered £lag. He had extreme pressure from Nuckols and Williams. The feature was a good one. Four riders - Eckert, Williams, uckols, and Rickman - rode as though tied LOgether. Eckert held the lead all the way, but the other three diced it out trying LO get an advantage or make the leader slip. It was not LO be. Eckert, the 1985 Track Champion, held on LO win his first feature of the season. Williams, Nuckols and Rickman carried their battle for runner-up right to the flag. They finished in that order. Albright aces Motosports MX By Bill Holt BYRON, IL, JULY 5 A smaller than usual rider turnout showed up for this week's competition at Motosports Park, but Dan Albright reeled off wins in tile 80cc Senior and 125cc B classes, de pite some tough competition. In the 80cc Senior class Albright swept to wins in both moLOS ahead of Brian Cook and Craig Noack. The I25cc B class saw Albright hold off the charges of Adam Garvey and Tom Fosler for both moto wins. Garvey took second overall with his 3-2 score and Fosler was third with a 2-3 tally. Jason Bardoner led the battle for second in both motos for the 80 c Junior class win. That battle for second was won by Matt Spayer who swapped second spots with Keith Herrmann, but won the one that counted. Tim Filippi continued his run near the top of the 250cc B class with a 1-2 day LO take the overall over Tom Fosler (3-1) and Scott Jurgensen (2-3). With the small crowd because of another local qualifier the A and Open classes were combined, which made for tighter racing. Joe Weisenbutter followed Brad Nordolf borne in the first moLO, but fought his way back in the second to nip ordolf for the. win and the overall. Barbacovi bombs Perris MX By Tami Rice PERRIS, CA, JULY 5 Jeff Barbacovi was the dominating force on the short, but technical track at Perris Raceway Sunday. Barbacovi was on the gas and it paid off as he grabbed the I25cc Intermediate victory. MoLO one saw Barbacovi stuck in the gate as Honda-mounted Tony Qualls took the holeshot. Joe Billy Ellis (42). Barbacovi quickly pulled up before the end of lap one then caught up and passed both Qualls and DeGano to take over fi.rst. Leaving them in his dust, Barbacovi pulled out to a huge lead and went on to take the checkered flag and first place honors. Qualls held off DeGano for second place honors. Barbacovi snaked the holeshot in moto twO and never looked back. Bob Smith (Hon). eo eo eo Beyer, Kasten win Wausau HaH Mile By AJ Sumner WAUSAU, WI, JULY 5 The Rib Mountain Riders closed out the annual Wisconsin Triple Header Weekend with a half mile event at Marathon Park in downtown Wausau, and provided the 90 riders on hand with the finest shape the race track has seen in years. Cliff Eckes Jr. and Joe Bentfield shot LO the front of the 250cc class final and battled for four laps. In lap five, Eckes dropped off the pace and Bret Beyer, who had a horrendous start, moved into second. As Bentfield enjoyed a comfortable lead at the stan of the white flag lap, Beyer refused to give up and continued his 'amazing charge to the front. As the distant twosome entered turn three on the last lap, Beyer got an unbelievable drive and blasted past Bent- field to claim a well-deserved wm. Eckes held on LO finish third. Steve Kasten, Mark Muth, and Peter Hook grabbed the LOp three spots at the start of the 600cc Amateur class and easily pulled away from the rest of the pack. The obvious presence ,of rocks prevented Muth or Hook from making any moves on Kasten, as Ka ten cored an uncontested win. Dave Durelle, riding a 600cc Wood-Rotax, was clearly the c1ass.of the 750cc Pro-Am field as be overcame a mediocre start to pull away to a comfortable win. Marty Bushman held a lonely econd while Greg Wagenknecht charged from a poor start to grab third place honors. The top runners were out to gain some ground on points leader Stacey Cook. Cook LOok the holeshot in round one ahead of Derek Brown, Corey Cope and Kip andell. Brown was definitely the fastest in the class, and took the lead coming off the mountain shortly after the start. On the next lap, Cook missed a berm and Cope slipped past for second then bailed hard on tbe next circuit. He was out for the day with an injured shoulder. Sandell snuck past Cook for second on the same lap, but Brown was cruising comfortably out front. He stayed there until lap eight, when he developed a rear flat. Sandell blew past and stretched out a 15 second lead over Cook and Dave Newell at , the checkers. Cook, again, led Brown out of the gate in moLO two, with Jim Mitchell third and Sandell fourth. Brown hounded Cook for six laps, then dove inside for the lead at the start of lap seven. He held Cook at bay the rest of the way, while Sandell was getting around Mitchell for third. Cook's 2- 41
