Gray's day at Lake Geneva MX By Jack Biddison LAKE GENEVA, WI, JULY 10 Don Gray riding a Kawasaki, extended his points lead in the 125cc Amateur class, as he won his heat and finished second in the feature in Friday night Suzuki Motocross racing at the Lake Geneva Raceway. The combination of the win in the heat and a second in the feature gave him the overall point honors for the night in the class that continues to attract the largest number of riders. Forty-three riders signed up and saw the field split for the heats with nonqualifiers running the consi. Local area favorite Bo Sands topped the 20 riders in the feature and held 0[[ Gray ta prevent a sweep. Burgett, Sun top Washougal MX . By Clay Light WASHOUGAL, WA, JULY 4-5 Kawasaki-mounted Rick Burgett . was among the 36 overall winners that provided fireworks of their own on this Fourth of July double-header at Washougal Motocross Park. Burgelt commanded both 30-40 Pro class moLOS on Sunday; in true former ational Champion style. Ron Sun claimed the 250cc Pro class on Saturday, making for what was one of the most memorable races of recent years. Track operator Ralph Huffman's worst fears became reality on Saturday morning. After grooming the track ta its absolute finest condition, the skies broke loose and dumped nearly an inch of rain on the infamous track, making conditions their absolute worst. It was the same on Sunday. Even HuHman's slick caterpillar work couldn't bring the COUFse to its best, which made for the muddiest Four of July race in quite some time. Over 300 riders were on hand both days. Honda pilot Scott Williams was among the big winners on Saturday. Williams won the first "dry" Open Intermediate mota, then used his mud experience to dominate mota two for a I-I sweep. Second in the overall results went to one-time class dominaLOr Kurt Stevens with 2-3 tallies and Bob Leach was third. Stevens trailed Mitch Kirkpatrick in the first· mota of Up the Hill competition, but got lucky in mota two for a win and the overall via 3-1 performances. Kirkpatrick had his share of problems in mota two and was relegated to third in the overall standings, behind Stevens and Joe Casey. Former Team ·Honda member Ron Sun rode two good moLOS to top a small field of Pros on Saturday. Mike Stahl gave chase, but to no avail. Sun captured top 250cc honors. In the 125cc Pro class, Oregon's Kenny Olsen and David Bailey traded moLO wins. Bailey won the first moto, but his second moLO third would only give him third overall behind Olsen (3-1) and Scott SteHy (2-2). Burgett, 31, .launched his .Kawasaki into sizable leads in both 30-40 Pro moLOS Saturday, showing flashes of brilliance from yesteryear. The former 500cc National Champion gave the majority of spectators quite a thrill. To see him ride brought back memories ta many on hand. Some could still recall seeing Burgett circulating the track on his I25cc CZ or winning all three Pro classes on the then "new" Yamaha monoshock YZS, circa 1975. Anyway, it was just as easy now as it was then for Burgett to take a I-I sweep of the class. Tim Sullivan performed two valiant rides LO seal a win in the 30-40 Expert portion over Ted Tennekeighl. Tony Graves seems LO be in a class of his own. Graves swept the 125cc and; 250cc Intermediate classes both day for' an eight-for-eight mota win tally. It was the only such feat the entire weekend. Graves beat Dana Anderson in the I 25cc class with Jeff Daily taking third on Sunday. Graves beat Sullivan in the 250cc class for his double class win Sunday. Jason McCormick was among the two overall winners, taking wins in the 60cc class both days. McCormick easily won Sunday's events, beating Intermediate winner Eric Burkinshaw, Todd Kibble and Nate Gravelle (all were mounted on Kawasakis). McCormiCk didn't run among traffic until hilling lapped riders late in the molo. Mike Ulven came away with Junior laurels over Doug McKuhnasnd Corey Rassmusen. Results SATURDAY OPEN PRO: 1.
